Short answer: Senator Lindsey Graham said the FBI had his phone after someone contacted him while posing as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Graham’s spokesperson said the Senate Sergeant at Arms was investigating a “possible hack,” but public reporting from May 2024 did not establish that the device was breached, what method was used, whether data was taken, or who was responsible.
What happened to Lindsey Graham’s phone?
At the Hill & Valley Forum on May 2, 2024, Graham reportedly told attendees, “My phone is in the hands of the FBI now.” Axios and The Independent said the contact came from a person impersonating Schumer.

| Question | What public reporting establishes |
|---|---|

| What happened to Graham’s phone? | Graham said the FBI had possession of it. |
| Was the phone definitely hacked? | No. The official wording reported by his spokesperson was “possible hack.” |
| How did the contact occur? | Not stated publicly; reports do not identify whether it was a call, text, spoofed caller ID, or a compromised account. |
| Was information stolen? | No public source reviewed for this account confirms data access or theft. |
| Who was behind it? | No perpetrator, nationality, organization, or government has been identified publicly. |

Was Chuck Schumer’s account hacked?
There is no public evidence in the contemporaneous reports that Schumer’s own account or phone was compromised. The confirmed point is that a person used Schumer’s identity when contacting Graham. That could involve impersonation, spoofing, or another form of account or number misuse; the reports do not specify which.
Did the FBI identify the attacker?
Not in the public accounts available from the May 2024 coverage. The reports say Graham’s phone was with the FBI and that the Senate Sergeant at Arms was investigating, but they do not name a suspect or provide an attribution.

How the incident fits later FBI warnings
In a May 15, 2025 warning, the FBI described a campaign in which malicious actors impersonated senior U.S. officials through smishing (text messages) and vishing, including AI-generated voice messages. The actors were described as building rapport before seeking access to personal accounts. The FBI advised recipients to verify a sender through a trusted number and to inspect contact details, links, and spelling carefully.

An FBI update dated December 19, 2025 said the activity dated back to at least 2023 and had included members of Congress and their contacts. According to that notice, actors could try to move targets to encrypted messaging, request authentication codes that synchronize a device with a contact list, or ask for identity documents.

Inspect the request, not just the identity
- Treat urgent requests to continue in an encrypted app as a warning sign.
- Never provide one-time authentication codes, passwords, recovery keys, or copies of identity documents in response to an unsolicited message.
- Check links, domains, spelling, and minor changes in contact details before opening anything.
- Be cautious even when a voice sounds familiar; the FBI has warned that AI-generated voice messages can be used in impersonation campaigns.
Preserve evidence and report it
Keep the original message, headers, call details, usernames, links, and screenshots. Avoid deleting or forwarding suspicious material until your organization’s security team or law enforcement advises you. If an account may be exposed, contact the provider through its official support channel and change credentials from a trusted device.

Graham reported that the FBI had his phone after a person posing as Schumer contacted him. The Senate Sergeant at Arms treated it as a possible hack, but the public record does not confirm a breach, identify the attacker, specify the technique, or show that data was stolen. Later FBI alerts show why impersonating senior officials is a serious tactic, without establishing that those alerts were tied to Graham’s case.
