What Liminal Industries is
CurseForge describes Liminal Industries as “Explore, conquer and industrialise the liminal backrooms with tech and magic.” It combines Backrooms exploration with scrap-based survival, quests, automation and technology. Instead of beginning with a normal overworld, you wake in a constructed liminal environment and work outward through increasingly dangerous areas.

The CurseForge project is listed for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge, authored by Appocryptha. The listing showed 919,122 downloads when checked in 2026, and its latest visible project update was July 14, 2026. The principal listed release is Liminal Industries 1.19.3, uploaded December 30, 2025. The server-pack entry is Liminal Industries 1.19.3 v2.zip, uploaded July 14, 2026. Always verify the release number in your launcher and server panel before creating a world; a client and server on different pack builds can fail to connect or behave unpredictably.
Compatibility: Java only, not Bedrock
Liminal Industries is a Forge modpack, so it runs only on Minecraft: Java Edition with the pack installed. It does not run on the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, on consoles, or on an unmodified vanilla client. A Bedrock player cannot join a Liminal Industries server by changing an address or enabling a resource pack: the mod loader, Java runtime and mod files are required on the client.

- Game edition: Minecraft Java Edition.
- Game version: 1.20.1.
- Mod loader: Forge.
- Client requirement: the same Liminal Industries release as the server.
- Server requirement: the matching Liminal Industries server pack and a newly generated pack world.
Players who own both editions must launch the Java profile, not the Bedrock installation. A standard 1.20.1 Forge profile without the Liminal Industries mods is also incompatible.
Install the client profile
The easiest installation uses CurseForge App or Prism Launcher. Both download the mod files and create an isolated profile, so you do not have to copy individual mods by hand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install a launcher. Install CurseForge App or Prism Launcher on the computer running Minecraft Java Edition.
- Find the pack. Search the launcher for Liminal Industries and select the project authored by Appocryptha. Check that the profile says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Select the release. Install the current release that your server will use. If a host specifies 1.19.3, choose that exact client release rather than simply choosing the newest result.
- Let the launcher finish. It downloads Forge, the mod list, configuration files and resource assets. A large download or a slow first launch is normal for a modpack.
- Launch once offline. Start the profile and wait until the main menu appears. This first run creates configuration directories and lets Forge initialize before you attempt to connect.
- Check the profile. From the launcher, confirm that the selected instance still reports Forge 1.20.1 and the intended Liminal Industries release. Do not add unrelated mods until the unmodified profile has connected successfully.
If the launcher reports a missing dependency, an incomplete download or a crash before the menu appears, remove and reinstall the profile rather than mixing files from another Minecraft version. Keep a copy of any crash report if the problem persists.
Join a Liminal Industries server
After the profile reaches the title screen, connect as you would to any Java server:
- Open Multiplayer.
- Choose Add Server.
- Enter the address supplied by the administrator. Lemony SMP documents
liminal.lemonysmp.comas its example address; that address is only an example, not a universal Liminal Industries server. - Save the entry and select Join Server.
The server and client must agree on Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and the complete pack release. A “mismatched mod list,” handshake failure or immediate disconnect usually means one side was updated without updating the other.
What to do in the opening area
The first minutes intentionally do not resemble vanilla Minecraft. Lemony SMP’s walkthrough places the player in a small carpeted room. There may be no ordinary tree, exposed ore vein or conventional crafting start. Treat the room as a tutorial and resource cache.

Recover the first materials
- Break chairs. Chairs provide the first wood-like material needed for basic tools and crafting.
- Cut the carpet. Removing carpet exposes concrete and helps reveal the route or resources hidden in the starting room.
- Craft basic tools. Use the recovered materials to make the first tools instead of waiting for a normal overworld tree.
- Open the quest book. Follow its objectives in order; it supplies the progression cues that a vanilla recipe book cannot provide.
Move from scavenging to industry
Progress begins with furniture, fixtures and machinery that can be dismantled for scrap. Quests then introduce machines, processing chains and automation. Later destinations include poolrooms and limbo, where exploration is more dangerous and travel can generate many new chunks. Store valuable components before entering an unfamiliar area, and avoid sprinting indefinitely in one direction until the server has been configured for the resulting generation load.
Choose a hosting method
You can rent a managed Minecraft modpack server or run the server yourself on a Linux machine. The right choice depends less on a headline player count than on CPU speed, storage, file access and how confidently you can manage Java and backups.
| Decision factor | Managed modpack hosting | Self-hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Pack installation | Usually a control-panel selector; confirm that the exact Liminal Industries server-pack release is available. | You download and unpack the server archive, then maintain the files yourself. |
| Java and Forge control | Ask whether Java 17 and Forge 1.20.1 can be selected or verified. | Full control, including the documented OpenJDK 17 package and JVM arguments. |
| CPU and memory | Compare guaranteed or dedicated resources, not only advertised RAM. | You choose the machine and can upgrade its CPU, memory or NVMe storage. |
| Backups and rollback | Look for scheduled world backups, downloadable archives and restore controls. | You must schedule, test and protect your own backups. |
| File access | Panel file manager or SFTP availability varies by provider. | Direct shell and file-system access. |
| Latency | Choose a region near most players. | Place the machine near players or your network; home upload quality matters. |
| Fresh-world workflow | Prefer a panel that can generate a new world after selecting the pack. | You create the world directory and control exactly when it is regenerated. |
| Billing and support | Monthly pricing and support are convenient but provider-dependent. | No hosting subscription, but you provide administration, security and uptime. |
For a managed service, verify the server-pack filename or release number before paying. A generic Forge installer is not proof that the host supports Liminal Industries’ custom generation and configuration.
Install a self-hosted server on Linux
Space-Node documents the following sequence for a Linux installation. It assumes shell access, permission to install packages and a server with enough memory for the player count. Replace the archive name with the exact server-pack filename you downloaded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Create a dedicated directory and enter it:
mkdir liminal-server && cd liminal-server
- Extract the matching server archive:
unzip Liminal-Industries-Server-[VERSION].zip
- Install the Java runtime used by the documented Forge 1.20.1 setup:
sudo apt install openjdk-17-jre-headless -y
- Run the supplied startup script without a graphical interface:
./run.sh nogui
The Forge installation creates run.sh and user_jvm_args.txt. The first startup may create files, request acceptance of the Minecraft EULA and take longer while the world and mod data initialize. Stop the process cleanly, accept the EULA in the generated file when required, then start it again. Never run two server processes against the same world directory.
Java version and JVM arguments
Use Java 17 for this documented Forge 1.20.1 arrangement. Space-Node specifically warns that -XX:+ZGenerational requires Java 21 and fails on Java 17. Do not paste Java 21-only flags into a Java 17 installation.

- Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
An example user_jvm_args.txt configuration is:
-Xms8G
-Xmx8G
-XX:+UseG1GC
-XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled
-XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200
-XX:+DisableExplicitGC
-XX:+AlwaysPreTouch
The 8 GB heap in this example is a starting allocation, not a promise that every world or player count will run well. Leave memory for the operating system, file cache and other services. If the machine has only 8 GB total, assigning all 8 GB to Java can make the host swap or terminate processes.
Generate the correct world
Liminal Industries depends on custom environment generation and progression. HolyHosting’s pack-specific instructions say a fresh world is strongly recommended. In a managed panel, stop the server before changing versions, select Liminal Industries, choose the available release, use the panel’s Generate New World or equivalent option, then start the server. Join only after the new world has finished generating.
For a self-hosted installation, preserve the old world as a backup before changing pack versions. Do not point the pack at a normal vanilla world and expect the intended Backrooms layout to appear. A standard world can omit required structures, progression data or generation behavior. If you already started on the wrong world, stop the server, archive the existing world directory, create a new pack world and test it with a fresh player.
RAM, CPU and storage planning
Space-Node publishes indicative targets rather than an official developer specification. They account for the pack’s custom chunk generation and the additional tick work from factories.
| Concurrent players and stage | RAM target | CPU guidance | NVMe storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 players, early game | 6–8 GB | 3.8 GHz or faster single-thread performance | 40 GB |
| 5–10 players, mid-game factories | 8–10 GB | 4.0 GHz or faster single-thread performance | 60 GB |
| 10+ players, late-game automation | 10–14 GB | 4.2 GHz or faster single-thread performance | 80 GB |
These figures are planning targets, not guarantees. A small group exploring several directions can generate more work than a larger group staying in one base. Late-game machines add per-tick entity and automation overhead, while backups, logs and multiple worlds consume storage. NVMe is preferred for world saves and chunk files because generation and autosaves involve frequent disk access.
Keep exploration and automation under control
The pack is CPU-sensitive for two separate reasons: its Backrooms generation keeps producing chunks as players explore, and factories perform machine work every tick. Space-Node recommends starting with these server properties:
Rank #4
- 8,800 MINECOINS — Get 8,800 Minecoins to spend on creator-made content in the Minecraft Marketplace.
- MINECRAFT MARKETPLACE — Browse a constantly updating library of content from Minecraft creators, with new content available every week.
- CREATOR-MADE CONTENT — Use Minecoins to get Marketplace content such as skin packs, mash-up packs, mini-games, and adventure maps.
- ACCESS ACROSS DEVICES — Once redeemed and linked to your Microsoft account, your Minecoins and purchases are available on supported devices that run Minecraft, including Android, iOS, Windows, and Xbox.
- A GIFT FOR PLAYERS — Give Minecraft players Minecoins to spend on content in the in-game Marketplace.
view-distance=8
simulation-distance=6
max-tick-time=90000
view-distance=8: limits how many chunks each player receives from the server.simulation-distance=6: limits how far entities and machines remain actively simulated.max-tick-time=90000: gives a long-running tick more time before the watchdog stops the server. It can prevent premature watchdog termination, but it does not make a slow tick faster.
Set a world border when your group does not need unlimited travel. A border reduces unbounded chunk generation and makes storage growth predictable. It is especially useful after players have established a base and want to reserve CPU for automation. No processor choice can guarantee a constant 20 TPS if several players continuously generate new terrain while large factories are active; distance settings and exploration habits matter as much as hardware.
Operational habits that help
- Pre-plan an exploration area and expand the border deliberately.
- Keep high-throughput machines organized rather than scattering thousands of active blocks across loaded chunks.
- Schedule backups when players are offline or activity is low.
- Watch tick time, memory use and disk space after each major factory expansion.
- Restart cleanly after configuration changes instead of editing files while the server is running.
Backups, updates and version changes
Before updating the pack, copy the complete world directory, server configuration, mod list and player data to storage outside the live server. Label backups with the pack release and date. A backup that contains only the world but not configuration files may be difficult to restore if the update changes generation or machine settings.
Use this order for an update:
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally.
- Back up the world and server files.
- Confirm the new client and server release numbers.
- Install the new server-pack files without deleting the backup.
- Start a temporary test world and verify that Forge loads without errors.
- Test the updated release on a copy of the production world before migration.
- Update every player’s launcher profile, then reopen the production server.
Never downgrade by overwriting a newer world with older files unless you have a tested backup. Modded worlds can record data that an older release cannot read.

The launcher crashes before the main menu
- Confirm the profile is Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, not Fabric or another Minecraft version.
- Remove manually added mods and test the untouched Liminal Industries profile.
- Reinstall the profile if the launcher reports an incomplete download.
- Check that the computer has enough free memory for the launcher and Java process.
The server rejects the connection
Compare the client and server release, Forge version and mod list. A server on 1.19.3 v2 will not necessarily accept a client on a different 1.19.3 build. Reinstall the exact profile named by the administrator and remove any extra client-only or server-only files that were copied manually.
The world looks ordinary or progression is missing
This usually indicates that the server was started on a normal world. Stop the server, preserve that world as an archive, create a fresh Liminal Industries world and test with a new player. Do not try to repair custom generation by merely changing the seed.
Chunk generation stalls or the watchdog fires
- Lower
simulation-distanceand keepview-distanceat conservative values such as 6 and 8. - Use
max-tick-time=90000as documented, understanding that it changes the watchdog tolerance rather than server speed. - Stop several players from exploring in different directions at once.
- Set or reduce the world border.
- Check single-thread CPU load, available RAM and NVMe free space before increasing the heap.
A player falls into an empty or void-like area
Lemony SMP suggests /kill as a recovery after joining its example server. That command drops the player’s carried items. Administrators should teleport an established player to a safe location instead, preserving inventory where possible. Treat the command as an emergency recovery, not a routine fix.
Java reports an unrecognized JVM option
Inspect user_jvm_args.txt. Remove Java 21-only options such as -XX:+ZGenerational when running Java 17. Verify the active runtime with your operating system’s Java version command and ensure the server script is using the intended installation.

Can you play Liminal Industries on Bedrock?
No. Liminal Industries requires Java Edition and Forge 1.20.1 on every client. Bedrock players need a separate Bedrock-compatible game or add-on; the Liminal Industries Forge pack cannot be installed on Bedrock. If a group includes Bedrock users, they must use Java Edition to join this pack’s server.
Quick pre-launch checklist
- Every player owns and launches Minecraft Java Edition.
- All clients use Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and the same Liminal Industries release.
- The server uses the matching server-pack archive, not a generic Forge-only setup.
- Java 17 is installed for the documented self-hosted configuration.
- A fresh pack world has been generated and the old world is backed up.
- RAM, single-thread CPU speed and NVMe capacity match the expected player count.
view-distance,simulation-distanceandmax-tick-timehave conservative starting values.- Backups, file access and a recovery plan have been tested before inviting players.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Liminal Industries file should a server owner download?
Use the server-pack archive that matches the client release. The listing identifies “Liminal Industries 1.19.3 v2.zip” as a separate server file; do not substitute a client profile or a generic Forge server.
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for every Liminal Industries server?
No. Space-Node’s 6–8 GB figure applies to an indicative 2–4-player early-game setup. Mid-game factories and late-game automation have higher published targets, and CPU speed, exploration and machine count can change the result.
Can I keep my existing vanilla world and add the pack?
A fresh world is strongly recommended because the pack relies on custom generation and progression. Archive the vanilla world, generate a new pack world and test it before allowing players to continue.
What should I do before changing pack versions?
Stop the server, make a complete backup, test the new release on a copy of the world, and update every client to the same Minecraft, Forge and pack versions.
The Bottom Line
For the intended experience, run the matching Liminal Industries server pack on a fresh Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge world, use Java 17, and plan around single-thread CPU performance as carefully as RAM. Start with conservative view and simulation distances, control exploration with a world border, and keep tested backups before every update.
