Prioritize a functional lineup of Identities first: they determine the skills and combat characteristics each Sinner brings to a fight. Add and use E.G.O. to solve specific encounter problems when its effects justify the Sin-resource and Sanity costs. Neither system universally outranks the other; the right investment depends on your roster, team plan and the fight in front of you.
What Identities and E.G.O. do
Identities define a Sinner’s combat kit
An Identity is an alternate version of a Sinner, with its own skills and combat characteristics. Identities are tied to individual Sinners, so they determine what skills that Sinner can bring into battle. Project Moon describes the system as borrowing an identity from an alternate reality; see the official Limbus Company site.

E.G.O. adds a special attack and effects
E.G.O. is also specific to a Sinner, but it functions as a special attack rather than an alternate skill set. A Sinner’s E.G.O. can be equipped across that Sinner’s Identities. Its effects can include changes to resistances, but using it draws on accumulated Sin resources and spends Sanity. The official game overview and a specialist gameplay guide explain these systems at Project Moon and Steam Community.

They have separate upgrade paths
Identity progression uses levels and Uptie; E.G.O. has a separate Threadspin progression. These are different investments, not interchangeable upgrades. Put resources into the track that improves the part of your team that currently needs work.

Should you invest in an Identity or E.G.O. first?
Start by making sure each active Sinner has an Identity whose skills and combat profile are useful for the content you play. A special attack cannot replace the ordinary kit that Identity supplies throughout a fight. Once the lineup functions, invest in E.G.O. where a particular attack or effect gives you a meaningful answer to an encounter.
When comparing options, use the following checks rather than a universal tier rule:
- Encounter fit: Does the Identity’s kit or the E.G.O. effect address the enemy or mechanic you are facing?
- Clashes and damage: Are the skills and resistances appropriate for the fight?
- Team synergy: Does the choice support the team’s status effects, shared resources or Sin-resonance plan?
- Cost and reliability: Can your team generate the required Sin resources, and can the Sinner pay the Sanity cost without an unacceptable risk of Corrosion?
- Upgrade value: Would levels or Uptie improve the Identity you rely on, or is Threadspin the investment that better supports your plan?
Build around synergy when it helps
Teams can be built around shared statuses such as Burn or Sinking, shared resources such as Poise or Charge, or recurring Sin resonance. Specialist guidance describes these as ways to shape a team’s plan, not mandatory requirements for every battle. A group of strong standalone Identities can still work when their kits suit the encounter.
Use synergy as a practical test: if an Identity or E.G.O. helps your team apply, maintain or benefit from its chosen mechanic, it may be a better fit than an individually powerful option that does not contribute to the plan. A team does not need to chase one status or resource if the current fight does not reward it.
When is E.G.O. worth using?
Use E.G.O. when its special attack or effects solve a problem worth paying for: for example, when the attack fits the enemy or the resistance change helps the Sinner withstand the encounter. Before committing, consider whether the team has generated the required Sin resources and whether spending Sanity leaves the Sinner in a manageable state.
Sanity affects combat outcomes. At low Sanity, Corrosion becomes a risk; a specialist guide warns it can make a Sinner uncontrollable and, depending on the E.G.O., may risk friendly fire. Weigh that possibility against the benefit of using the attack, especially if the Sinner’s actions need to remain predictable.
Why fixed rankings can mislead
The best choice depends on your available roster and the encounter, so there is no supported rule that E.G.O. always outranks Identities or vice versa. Project Moon’s announcement feed showed version 1.116.1 notices and October 2026 Canto X encounter updates when checked on October 7, 2026. Encounter advice can change with updates; consult the official Steam announcement feed for current notices before relying on patch-specific recommendations.
