Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

A small static site, modest web app, or reverse proxy makes a manageable first project—but no plan specification alone guarantees a particular traffic capacity.
What should you host, and what should you compare?
Write down the server’s job before choosing a plan. Serving static files, running a dynamic application, acting as a reverse proxy, and hosting a database-backed service have different software and resource needs. Include the application, its data, and any supporting services when estimating CPU, memory, storage, and monthly transfer.

Compare the full service rather than its headline price. Namecheap’s provider-authored guide lists the following configurations as examples; they are not independent performance tests or universal minimums.
| Plan example | CPU | RAM | Storage | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spark — Namecheap, 2026 | 1 CPU core | 1 GB | 20 GB SSD | 1 TB bandwidth |
| Pulsar — Namecheap, 2026 | 2 CPU cores | 2 GB | 40 GB SSD | 1 TB bandwidth |
These figures appeared in Namecheap’s plan comparison on a page updated April 28, 2026; plans and commercial terms can change. They do not establish how many visitors either plan can handle. See Namecheap’s VPS setup guide.

Also check billing term and renewal price, storage type, transfer overage policy, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, root and SSH access, whether management is included, backup and snapshot terms, upgrade path, support, and server location relative to your users. A self-managed VPS means you are responsible for routine administration unless the provider’s terms say otherwise.
Which operating system should you install?
Choose a currently supported distribution release and use instructions written for that release. Ubuntu’s server documentation covers getting started, networking, security, software updates, storage, web services, and virtualization. Its documentation targets the latest LTS release and notes that older LTS versions can differ, so verify that a tutorial matches the OS image deployed on your VPS.
Rank #2
Start with Ubuntu Server documentation if you select Ubuntu. For another distribution, consult that project’s official documentation rather than assuming package names or commands are interchangeable.
How do you prepare remote access and secure the server?
Use the SSH credentials configured or supplied during deployment. Before changing authentication or firewall settings, confirm that you can reach the provider’s web or recovery console; it can provide another route into the server if a remote-access change blocks SSH.

- Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately NOT installed, installation required.
- Connect using the provider’s documented SSH method. Confirm the server address, SSH port, and credential type in the provider’s deployment details.
- Install available package updates. Use the commands documented for the installed distribution and release, then follow its guidance for keeping security updates current.
- Create and verify a separate administrative account. Use it for routine work instead of logging in as root. Confirm the account can administer the system before changing how root access works.
- Set a minimal firewall policy. Allow only services the workload needs. Keep the actual SSH access path available to the operator, and allow public web traffic if the server will serve a public site.
- Review access after installing software. Check firewall rules and exposed ports so that new services are not reachable unnecessarily.
Do not enable restrictive firewall rules by copying a command without checking its assumptions: confirm the SSH port and recovery route first. Exact authentication settings and commands depend on the chosen OS and release. Ubuntu’s server documentation includes security and update guidance; Namecheap’s setup walkthrough also covers SSH, updates, and firewall considerations.
What web software does a small VPS need?
Install only components required by the application. For a basic web-serving role, Nginx is one reasonable option; Namecheap’s guide describes it as “lightweight, fast, and widely used.” That is the provider’s characterization, not an independent benchmark. Apache is another common web server. A dynamic application may additionally need a language runtime and, depending on its design, a database.
Rank #4
Use the chosen distribution’s current package instructions, then consult Nginx’s official documentation for Nginx configuration. Do not install a database or application runtime just because it is common: each additional component adds configuration and maintenance work.

How do you point a domain to the VPS and verify the site?
For a public site, create the appropriate DNS record at the domain’s authoritative DNS provider so the hostname resolves to the VPS address. Namecheap’s walkthrough demonstrates an A-record step, but the control panel and required records vary by DNS provider and address setup.
Best Value
- Confirm the VPS address and the hostname you intend to serve.
- At the authoritative DNS provider, set the needed record to point the hostname at the VPS address.
- Configure the web server for that hostname using the server’s official documentation.
- Validate the web-server configuration before applying it; for Nginx, follow its documented configuration-testing process.
- Reload or restart the service as appropriate, then test the hostname from outside the VPS.
If the hostname does not resolve or the site is unreachable, check the DNS record and provider, hostname configuration, service status, and firewall rules. DNS interface labels and propagation behavior are provider-specific; use that provider’s instructions for its control panel.
How should you plan backups and ongoing maintenance?
Arrange backups before storing data you cannot afford to lose. A backup is a recoverable copy intended to protect data; an on-demand snapshot captures a point-in-time state of a server or its storage. Their exact contents, retention, storage location, and restore process depend on the provider and product, so check those terms rather than assuming a snapshot is a complete backup.
- Find out what is included, how long copies are retained, and whether backup storage is separate from the VPS.
- Check the restore procedure and what access or downtime it requires; perform a test restore if practical.
- Keep the OS updated according to its release documentation.
- Periodically review exposed ports, resource use, and whether backups can still be restored.
Ubuntu’s server documentation includes security and automatic-update topics. Namecheap’s provider walkthrough discusses backups and avoiding unnecessary exposed ports; verify current backup and snapshot terms directly with the provider you choose.
