Choose LibreOffice if you want a free desktop suite, prefer OpenDocument files, or need an office suite on Linux. Choose Microsoft 365 if your work depends on Microsoft’s apps and services, you regularly collaborate in Microsoft formats, or the subscription’s storage and monthly app updates are worth the recurring cost to you.
LibreOffice can open and save common Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats, but format support is not a guarantee that every complex document or macro will behave identically. The deciding questions are what files you exchange, which spreadsheet features you rely on, what devices you use, and whether Microsoft 365’s bundled services justify a subscription.

How the two suites differ
| Decision point | LibreOffice | Microsoft 365 |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Free, desktop-focused work; Linux; or workflows built around OpenDocument formats. | Work that specifically needs Microsoft apps, services, or regular collaboration in Microsoft-centered workflows. |
| Default file formats | OpenDocument formats such as ODT, ODS, and ODP. | Microsoft formats such as DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX are central to common workflows. |
| Microsoft file support | Can open and save common Microsoft Office formats, including OOXML; complex files still need checking. | Native choice for workflows that require Microsoft’s apps and features. |
| Macros | Some Excel Visual Basic scripts may run in recent versions when the relevant feature is enabled, but macro environments are not generally interchangeable. | Appropriate when the workflow specifically depends on Microsoft Office macro behavior; verify the plan and app required. |
| Cost and included services | The official standard download is available without a consumer subscription price. Optional commercial services are separate. | Consumer subscriptions bundle premium apps and services according to plan; Personal and Family include storage and monthly feature updates. |
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop builds. | Apps are available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, with availability depending on plan. |
The comparison is not simply “free versus paid.” LibreOffice may be enough for everyday documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, while Microsoft 365’s value depends on whether its specific apps, storage, updates, and services are useful in your workflow.

Yes. LibreOffice Help says LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office formats, including Office Open XML. It maps DOC and DOCX files to Writer, XLS and XLSX files to Calc, and PPT, PPS, and PPTX files to Impress. LibreOffice also provides a conversion wizard for batch conversion of Microsoft Office files to OpenDocument formats.

The Document Foundation’s February 19, 2026 announcement for LibreOffice 25.8.5 lists both ODF formats (ODT, ODS, ODP) and Microsoft OOXML formats (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) among the supported formats. That establishes format support, not a guarantee of identical rendering or behavior in every file.
What to check before switching
If a document’s appearance or calculations matter, test a copy of a representative file in the exact LibreOffice and Microsoft Office versions your team uses. Check page breaks, fonts, formulas, embedded objects, and any macros. Pay particular attention to templates and files that are edited by several people: a successful open does not by itself prove that later edits will round-trip without changes.
Do Excel macros work in LibreOffice?
Do not assume that they will. LibreOffice Help explains that Microsoft Office and LibreOffice generally cannot run the same macro code because their programming environments use different objects and methods. Recent LibreOffice versions can run some Excel Visual Basic scripts if the relevant feature is enabled, but this is not general VBA parity.

What Personal and Family include

These details apply to those consumer plans as described on that page; they should not be assumed for every Microsoft plan.

It also notes that app and service availability varies by plan. A subscription therefore does not mean the desktop apps run only in a browser.
Which suite fits your workflow?
Choose LibreOffice if…
- You want a desktop office suite without a consumer subscription price.
- You use Linux or prefer working in OpenDocument formats.
- Your regular documents, spreadsheets, and presentations do not depend on Microsoft-specific features or unverified macros.
- You exchange Microsoft-format files occasionally and can check important files after opening or editing them.
Choose Microsoft 365 if…
- Your work specifically requires Microsoft apps or features.
- You regularly collaborate through Microsoft formats and services and need dependable behavior in that environment.
- You will use the storage, premium apps, and monthly feature updates included in the consumer plan you select.
- You need apps across desktop and mobile devices and have confirmed that your plan includes the required apps and services.
Consider a one-time Office purchase separately
Office Home 2024 is listed by Microsoft as a one-time purchase, whereas Microsoft 365 is subscription-based. Compare the particular Office offer with your needs rather than assuming it includes Microsoft 365’s subscription services, storage, or update terms.

Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- List the files you exchange. Note whether you mainly create ODT, ODS, or ODP files, or routinely receive and return DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX documents.
- Identify must-have spreadsheet behavior. Check formulas, embedded content, and especially any VBA or other automation that cannot be allowed to fail.
- Check every device. Confirm the operating systems you use are supported and, for Microsoft 365, that your chosen plan provides the apps and services you need.
- Test representative files. Use copies of real documents and templates in the target suite; inspect layout, calculations, embedded objects, and macro results.
- Weigh the actual bundle. Compare LibreOffice’s no-consumer-subscription download with the specific Microsoft plan’s current cost and services. If those bundled benefits do not solve a real need, a recurring subscription may not be worthwhile.
