1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShort answer: Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice have separate Java-related security issues, but they do not affect every spreadsheet or every installation. Apache says OpenOffice versions through 4.1.16 are affected by a critical flaw triggered when a user opens a crafted untrusted document; its advisory lists 4.1.17 as an expected fix that was in release-candidate phase. LibreOffice lists fixes for its distinct Calc issue in versions 26.2.5 and 26.8.0. Check your suite and version, then take the action that applies to it.
What the two security advisories describe
The alarming phrase “malicious spreadsheets run code without macro warnings” blurs two separate vulnerabilities. Neither advisory says that all spreadsheets can execute code, or that every file-opening action is unsafe. The trigger and affected software differ.

| Software and issue | How it can be triggered | Affected versions and fix status | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apache OpenOffice, CVE-2026-59265: Java integration | Opening a crafted, untrusted document can trigger arbitrary code execution, including remote code. | Apache lists versions through 4.1.16 as affected. Its advisory says 4.1.17 is expected to fix the issue and was in release-candidate phase; it does not establish that 4.1.17 has been released. | Disable Java runtime integration as an interim measure. If you cannot, avoid opening untrusted files. Upgrade to a fixed version when Apache confirms availability. |
| LibreOffice, CVE-2026-63277: Calc external data source | A Calc document can link a cell range to an external data source and specify a Java database driver that is loaded remotely; opening the document could run Java code from that location. | The Document Foundation lists fixes in LibreOffice 26.2.5 and 26.8.0. | Upgrade to the fixed version appropriate to your LibreOffice branch. |
Apache labels CVE-2026-59265 “Critical.” Its advisory does not provide a numerical CVSS score in the published text. Apache describes it this way: “A code execution issue in the Java integration in Apache OpenOffice allows a crafted untrusted document to trigger the execution of arbitrary, even remote, code when it is opened by the user.” See the Apache OpenOffice advisory for CVE-2026-59265.
What to do if you use Apache OpenOffice
Disable Java integration while awaiting a fixed release
Apache’s interim mitigation is to turn off the suite’s Java runtime integration. The exact menu differs by operating system:
#1 Best Overall
- Windows and Linux: Open Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Java, then clear Use a Java runtime environment.
- macOS: Open OpenOffice > Preferences > OpenOffice > Java, then clear Use a Java runtime environment.
Apache says disabling this setting prevents the attack described in CVE-2026-59265. Some features that depend on Java may stop working while it is off. If you cannot disable Java runtime integration, Apache advises not opening untrusted documents. Consult the advisory for Apache’s current fix status before relying on 4.1.17: the published notice describes it as expected and in release-candidate phase, not as a confirmed released fix.
What to do if you use LibreOffice Calc
LibreOffice’s CVE-2026-63277 is not the same Java integration defect reported for OpenOffice. It concerns Calc’s external-data-source feature: a document can request data through a Java database driver loaded from a remote location. The Document Foundation lists LibreOffice 26.2.5 and 26.8.0 as fixed versions. Upgrade to the applicable fixed branch rather than treating OpenOffice’s Java-setting workaround as the remediation for this separate Calc issue.

Why older spreadsheet security warnings may sound similar
Both suites have had other advisories involving Calc, external content, formulas, macros, or Java. Similar wording does not mean they share the same cause or fix.
- Apache’s 2025 advisories CVE-2025-64403 and CVE-2025-64405 describe Calc external-data and DDE links loading without a prompt in versions through 4.1.15; Apache says those issues were fixed in 4.1.16. They are separate from the current Java integration code-execution issue. See the advisories for CVE-2025-64403 and CVE-2025-64405.
- Apache’s CVE-2025-64407 advisory is another distinct 2025 disclosure; its conditions and remediation should not be inferred from the current Java advisory.
- LibreOffice’s security archive includes older, separately fixed issues involving a malformed Calc formula parameter, macro URL execution, and Java class-path behavior. Those entries do not establish that the historical vulnerabilities remain unpatched. See the LibreOffice security advisories.
In particular, statements in the 2025 OpenOffice advisories that there were no known exploits apply to those older CVEs, not to CVE-2026-59265. They should not be used to characterize the current issue.

How to handle a spreadsheet or document you did not expect
- Identify whether the installed suite is Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice and check its version; the two current advisories have different affected components and fixes.
- For OpenOffice, apply the Java mitigation above until Apache confirms and provides the fixed release. Do not open an untrusted document if you cannot apply the mitigation.
- For LibreOffice, install the fixed version applicable to your branch. Treat unsolicited or unexpected files cautiously, especially if they request external data or come from an unknown sender.
- Do not assume that dismissing a macro prompt addresses either vulnerability: the advisories describe Java integration or a remotely loaded Java database driver, not simply a macro-running scenario.
