Liar’s Bar Crashing on Steam Deck? Here are 7 Easy Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Liar’s Bar crashing on Steam Deck can turn a quick session into a frustrating loop of freezes, black screens, or sudden returns to the Steam library. The good news is that many crashes come from common SteamOS, Proton, storage, or file integrity issues that are usually simple to fix.

This guide walks through seven easy fixes, starting with quick checks like compatibility, updates, and file verification, then moving into Proton tweaks, graphics changes, shader cache cleanup, and a clean reinstall if nothing else works.

Check Liar’s Bar and Steam Deck Compatibility

Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, confirm how Liar’s Bar currently behaves on Steam Deck. The game may run through Proton rather than a native Linux version, so crashes can depend on the game build, SteamOS version, Proton version, and whether the developer has recently patched the game. This is the best first check if the game crashes on launch, closes after the intro, or becomes unstable after an update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start on the game’s Steam store page or in your Library. Look for the Steam Deck compatibility badge. If it is marked Verified, the game should generally work well with default controls and settings, though crashes can still happen after updates. If it is marked Playable, expect small issues such as text entry, launcher quirks, or settings that need manual adjustment. If it is Unsupported or Unknown, the game may still run, but you may need Proton tweaks or lower settings to avoid crashes.

  1. Press the Steam button and open Library.
  2. Select Liar’s Bar.
  3. Open the game page and check the Steam Deck compatibility label.
  4. Scroll to any compatibility details Steam provides, such as required manual text entry or performance notes.
  5. Check the game’s Community Hub or recent Steam discussions for Steam Deck crash reports after the latest patch.

If other Steam Deck players are reporting the same crash after a recent update, the problem may be tied to the current game version rather than your device. In that case, the fastest workaround is often to try a different Proton version later in this guide, then wait for a game or Proton update. If most players report that the game runs normally, focus on local fixes such as verifying files, clearing cache, lowering settings, or freeing storage space.

It also helps to check where the crash happens. A crash before the main menu usually points to Proton, damaged files, or missing runtime components. A crash when joining a table or entering mullayer can be related to network services, overlays, or a game-side bug. A crash after several minutes of play may be caused by heat, memory pressure, shader cache issues, or graphics settings that are too high for the Deck. Matching the crash pattern to the likely cause will make the next fixes much quicker to test.

Restart the Steam Deck and Install Updates

If Liar’s Bar crashes after launch, freezes during matchmaking, or closes when loading into a table, start with a full Steam Deck restart and any pending updates. This is the easiest fix because it clears stuck background processes, refreshes Steam services, and applies SteamOS or game patches that may already contain crash fixes. It is especially worth trying if the game worked earlier, crashed after waking the Deck from sleep, or started acting up after switching between Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Fully restart the Steam Deck

Do not only put the Steam Deck to sleep and wake it again. A real restart is more useful for crash troubleshooting because it reloads the operating system and Steam client from scratch.

  1. Press the Steam button.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Restart.
  4. After the Deck boots back into Gaming Mode, open Liar’s Bar and test it again.

If the Steam Deck is frozen and you cannot open the Power menu, hold the Power button for about 10 seconds until the screen turns off. Wait a few seconds, then press the Power button again to turn it back on. Use this forced shutdown only when the system is unresponsive, not as your normal restart method.

2. Install SteamOS updates

SteamOS updates can include graphics driver changes, Proton improvements, input fixes, and Steam client stability updates. Any of these can affect how Liar’s Bar runs, especially on a handheld Linux system using Proton compatibility layers.

  1. Press the Steam button.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Under Software Updates, choose Check For Updates.
  5. If an update is available, install it and restart when prompted.

For most players, the Stable update channel is the best choice. If you are using the Beta or Preview channel and Liar’s Bar recently started crashing, consider switching back to Stable in Settings > System > System Update Channel. Beta builds can improve compatibility in some cases, but they can also introduce temporary issues.

3. Update Liar’s Bar and Steamworks components

After updating SteamOS, make sure the game itself is fully updated. Liar’s Bar may receive patches for mullayer stability, startup crashes, or performance problems, and Steam sometimes needs a moment to download supporting components before the game launches cleanly.

  1. Open your Library.
  2. Select Liar’s Bar.
  3. If you see an Update button instead of Play, install the update.
  4. Press the Steam button, go to Downloads, and confirm there are no pending items.

If an update is queued but not downloading, connect to a stable Wi-Fi network, plug the Steam Deck into power, and resume the download manually from the Downloads page. Once everything is finished, restart the Deck one more time before testing the game.

When this fix is most likely to help

  • Liar’s Bar crashes after sleep mode: Restarting clears the suspended session and reloads Steam properly.
  • The crash started suddenly: A pending SteamOS, Steam client, or game update may be waiting to install.
  • Other games feel unstable too: The issue may be system-wide rather than specific to Liar’s Bar.
  • You changed system channels recently: Returning to Stable can remove problems caused by experimental builds.

After the restart and updates are complete, launch Liar’s Bar without changing any other settings first. If it still crashes, move on to repairing the installation by verifying the game files in Steam.

Verify the Game Files in Steam

If Liar’s Bar crashes on startup, closes when joining a table, or suddenly began failing after an update, the next easy fix is to verify the game files through Steam. This checks the local installation on your Steam Deck against the version on Steam’s servers and automatically re-downloads missing, corrupted, or mismatched files. It is a safe step to try before changing Proton versions or reinstalling the whole game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

File issues can happen after interrupted downloads, low battery shutdowns, SteamOS updates, or moving games between internal storage and a microSD card. Verification does not delete your Steam account data or normally remove cloud saves, but it may reset any modified local files. If you have manually changed config files, back them up first.

  1. Press the Steam button on your Steam Deck.
  2. Go to Library and select Liar’s Bar.
  3. Open the game’s page, then select the gear icon on the right.
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for Steam to finish the scan and download any replacement files.

The scan can take a few minutes depending on whether Liar’s Bar is installed on the internal SSD or a microSD card. If Steam finds a problem, it will repair the installation automatically. When it finishes, restart the game from Gaming Mode and test the same action that was causing the crash, such as launching into the menu, entering matchmaking, or loading a private lobby.

If verification repeatedly finds files to replace, check your storage device as well. A slow or failing microSD card can cause read errors, stutters, and repeat crashes. In that case, try moving Liar’s Bar to the internal drive: open the game’s Properties, go to Installed Files, select Move install folder, and choose the internal storage if space is available. After moving it, verify the files again before launching.

This fix is most useful when the crash appeared after a patch, after switching storage locations, or after the game worked previously but now fails without any obvious settings change. If Steam reports that all files are valid and Liar’s Bar still crashes, move on to testing a different Proton version, because the issue may be compatibility-related rather than a damaged installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try a Different Proton Version

If Liar’s Bar opens to a black screen, crashes after the splash screen, freezes when joining a table, or closes randomly during a match, the Proton version Steam Deck is using may be the problem. Proton is the compatibility layer that lets Windows games run on SteamOS, and switching versions is one of the easiest fixes to try after updates and file verification.

Start with the default option first. If the game was previously forced to use an older Proton build, Steam may keep using it even after the game or SteamOS has been updated. Removing that forced setting can let Steam choose a better version automatically.

  1. Go to your Steam Library on Steam Deck.
  2. Select Liar’s Bar, then press the Menu button.
  3. Open Properties.
  4. Go to Compatibility.
  5. If Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool is enabled, turn it off.
  6. Launch Liar’s Bar again and test whether it still crashes.

If the automatic setting still crashes, try forcing a newer stable Proton version. Proton Experimental is often a good first pick for newer games because it receives compatibility fixes faster than the standard builds. It can help with startup crashes, video playback issues, online features, and controller-related problems.

  1. Open Liar’s Bar in your Steam Library.
  2. Press the Menu button and choose Properties.
  3. Select Compatibility.
  4. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Choose Proton Experimental from the list.
  6. Back out of the menu, then launch the game.

If Proton Experimental makes the crashing worse, switch to a stable version instead. Try Proton 9.0 first if it appears in your list, then test Proton 8.0 if needed. After changing Proton versions, Steam may run a short first-time setup again; let it finish before judging whether the fix worked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Proton option Best time to try it
Default Use this first if you previously forced a Proton version or recently updated SteamOS.
Proton Experimental Try this for startup crashes, online issues, black screens, or crashes after game updates.
Proton 9.0 Try this if Experimental is unstable but you still need a modern compatibility layer.
Proton 8.0 Try this if newer Proton versions introduce freezing, stuttering, or launch problems.

Test only one Proton version at a time, and play long enough to reproduce the crash. For example, if Liar’s Bar usually crashes when entering a lobby, test that exact action after each change. If the game crashes only after 20 minutes, leave it running through a full match before switching again.

You can also try Proton Hotfix if it appears in the compatibility list. This version is sometimes pushed by Valve for games that need a quick fix before the next main Proton release. If none of the available Proton versions stop the crashes, return the game to Default before moving on to graphics settings, overlays, shader cache, storage space, or a reinstall.

Lower Graphics Settings and Disable Overlays

If Liar’s Bar starts fine but crashes during a match, in the lobby, or after a few minutes of play, the Steam Deck may be running into a graphics or memory-related issue. Lowering the game’s visual settings reduces load on the APU and can help avoid sudden crashes, especially after updates, on busy online sessions, or when the Deck is running hot. This is a good fix to try after verifying files and testing Proton, because it does not require reinstalling the game.

Start by opening Liar’s Bar and going to the in-game graphics or video settings menu. If the game crashes before you can reach the menu, launch it in Gaming Mode, open the Steam overlay with the Steam button, and adjust performance settings from there first. Set the game to a lower resolution such as 1280×800 or 1152×720, then reduce demanding options like shadows, effects, post-processing, anti-aliasing, and texture quality. If there is a preset option, switch from High or Ultra to Medium or Low, then test one match before changing more settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use fullscreen or borderless consistently: If one mode crashes, try the other and restart the game after changing it.
  • Cap the frame rate: Set the Steam Deck refresh rate and frame limit to 40 FPS or 30 FPS from the Quick Access menu under Performance.
  • Turn off motion blur and heavy effects: These are easy settings to disable and may reduce stutter before a crash.
  • Avoid high texture settings: Higher textures can increase memory use, which may cause instability on handheld hardware.

Next, disable overlays that may interfere with Liar’s Bar. The Steam overlay is usually stable, but if crashes happen when opening menus, inviting friends, chatting, or taking screenshots, it is worth testing the game without it. In Steam, select Liar’s Bar, open the gear icon, choose Properties, and toggle off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. Restart the game after making the change. If you use Discord, Decky Loader plugins, performance overlays, recording tools, or third-party launch options, close or disable them temporarily as well.

Steam Deck Oled 512 GB Handheld Gaming Console with 1280x800 HDR OLED display, Up to 90Hz Refresh Rate, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, With Carrying Case & 45W Power Supply
  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

You can also reduce Steam Deck-side performance pressure. Press the … button, open the Performance tab, and try a simple stable profile: frame limit at 40 or 30, refresh rate matched to that limit if available, and no aggressive manual GPU clock unless you already know it is stable. If you previously changed TDP, GPU clock, or scaling filters for another game, return them to default and test Liar’s Bar again. Custom performance profiles can help battery life, but overly tight limits may cause stutters, loading problems, or crashes in some games.

After each change, test the same part of the game where the crash usually happens. If Liar’s Bar becomes stable after lowering settings or disabling overlays, raise options back one at a time until you find the setting that triggers the problem. If crashes continue even on low settings with overlays off, move on to clearing shader cache and freeing up storage space, since corrupted cached data or low internal storage can also cause Steam Deck games to fail unexpectedly.

Clear Shader Cache and Free Up Storage Space

If Liar’s Bar crashes after the splash screen, freezes while loading into a match, or starts stuttering badly before closing, the issue may be related to shader cache data or low storage space. Steam Deck builds shader cache files to help games run more smoothly, but cached data can occasionally become outdated or corrupted after game updates, Proton changes, or SteamOS updates. At the same time, running the internal drive or microSD card nearly full can cause games to fail when they need temporary space for updates, saves, shaders, or compatibility files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking how much free space you have. Press the Steam button, go to Settings, then open Storage. Look at both Internal Drive and your microSD card if Liar’s Bar is installed there. As a practical target, keep at least 10–15 GB free on the drive where the game is installed, and more if you regularly switch Proton versions or play several PC games. If storage is tight, uninstall games you are not currently playing, move larger games to a microSD card, or delete old screenshots and recordings from Media.

Free up space from Steam Deck storage

  • Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  • Select the drive where Liar’s Bar is installed.
  • Choose a game you no longer need and select Uninstall, or move it to another drive if available.
  • Check Media for large screenshots or video clips and delete anything unnecessary.
  • Restart the Steam Deck, then launch Liar’s Bar again.

If freeing storage does not help, clear the game’s shader-related cache by changing Proton versions once, then switching back if needed. This forces Steam to rebuild compatibility data and download fresh shader pre-caching files where available. Go to Liar’s Bar in your Library, press the Options button, choose Properties, then open Compatibility. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and pick a different Proton version, such as Proton Experimental or a recent stable Proton release. Launch the game once. If it still crashes, return to the same menu and try the Proton version that worked best before.

Clear Proton data for a deeper reset

For crashes that began after several Proton changes, clearing the game’s Proton files can be more effective. In Gaming Mode, select Liar’s Bar, press the Options button, and look for Developer. If available, choose Delete Proton files. This removes the compatibility prefix for the game, so Steam can recreate it on the next launch. Be aware that this may reset some local configuration files for the game. If Liar’s Bar uses Steam Cloud for saves, let Steam finish syncing before and after this step.

  1. Make sure Steam Cloud sync has completed for Liar’s Bar.
  2. Select the game in your Library and open the Options menu.
  3. Go to Developer and select Delete Proton files.
  4. Launch the game and allow Steam to rebuild the compatibility setup.
  5. If prompted, wait for shader pre-caching or first-time setup to finish before pressing Play again.

Try this fix when Liar’s Bar crashes during loading, after a recent update, after moving the game between internal storage and microSD, or after testing mulle Proton versions. Once the cache is rebuilt and there is enough free storage, the game should have fewer launch failures and fewer crashes caused by incomplete temporary files.

Reinstall Liar’s Bar as a Last Resort

If Liar’s Bar still crashes after you have restarted the Steam Deck, updated SteamOS, verified the files, tested Proton versions, lowered settings, and cleared space, a clean reinstall is the next practical step. Use this fix when the game crashes on launch, freezes before reaching the main menu, or keeps failing after every smaller repair attempt. Reinstalling replaces the local game installation and can remove damaged files that Steam’s file verification does not fully correct.

Best Value

Before uninstalling, check whether Liar’s Bar uses Steam Cloud for your save data. On the game’s Steam page, open the gear icon, choose Properties, then check the General tab for Steam Cloud status. If cloud saves are enabled, Steam should sync your progress automatically. If you are unsure, launch Steam Deck in Desktop Mode and back up any local save folder you can find for the game before removing it.

  1. Press the Steam button and go to Library.
  2. Select Liar’s Bar, then open the gear icon on the game page.
  3. Choose Manage, then select Uninstall.
  4. Confirm the uninstall and wait for Steam to remove the game.
  5. Restart the Steam Deck before reinstalling. This helps clear any leftover temporary session issues.
  6. Go back to Library, select Liar’s Bar, and choose Install.
  7. Install it to the Steam Deck’s internal SSD if possible, especially if you previously ran it from a microSD card.

Installing to internal storage is worth trying because some crashes are linked to slow, failing, or nearly full microSD cards. If your internal drive does not have enough room, delete unused games or move a larger title to the microSD card first. Aim to keep several gigabytes free after installing Liar’s Bar, since SteamOS still needs space for shader cache, updates, and temporary files.

After reinstalling, test the game before changing too many settings at once. Launch Liar’s Bar with the default configuration and play long enough to see whether the crash returns. If it runs correctly, reapply any preferred settings gradually, such as a specific Proton version, frame rate cap, or graphics preset. If it still crashes immediately after a clean reinstall, the problem may be tied to a current game update, SteamOS compatibility issue, or online service problem rather than your local installation.

After switching Proton versions, restart the game and check whether the crashes happen in the same place.

Will verifying game files delete my Liar’s Bar saves?

Verifying game files should not delete your saves. It checks the installed game files and replaces missing or damaged ones through Steam. If you are worried, make sure Steam Cloud is enabled for Liar’s Bar before running the repair.

Can low storage space make Liar’s Bar crash on Steam Deck?

Yes, low internal storage can cause crashes, stutters, failed updates, and shader cache issues on Steam Deck. Try to keep several gigabytes free on the internal drive, even if the game is installed on a microSD card. Deleting unused games, clearing downloads, or moving large titles to external storage can help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Liar’s Bar if nothing else works?

Reinstall Liar’s Bar only after trying updates, file verification, Proton changes, lower graphics settings, and storage cleanup. A reinstall can fix broken local files that verification did not catch, but it takes longer and may require downloading the full game again. Before uninstalling, confirm Steam Cloud is syncing your save data if the game supports it.

Bottom Line

If Liar’s Bar keeps crashing on Steam Deck, start with the simplest fixes first: restart the Deck, update SteamOS and the game, verify the files, and try a different Proton version. These steps solve most launch crashes, random freezes, and post-update issues without needing a full reinstall.
