A dark LG TV picture is often caused by Energy Saving being on or an unsuitable Picture Mode. Start by checking the settings on the input or app where the problem appears. If only one HDMI source is affected, check its connection; if the settings menu itself is hard to see, part of the screen is dark, or the picture stays dim after a reset, contact LG support or a technician.
First, identify where the picture looks dark
Compare the affected input or app with another source and with the TV’s settings menu. LG notes that picture settings can differ between inputs, including HDMI and digital broadcast, so a setting change on one input may not carry over to another. If the room lighting changes and the screen brightness shifts with it, Energy Saving may be adjusting brightness in response to ambient conditions.

- All inputs look dark: Check Picture Mode and Energy Saving first.
- Only one input looks dark: Check that input’s picture settings; if it is HDMI, also check the connection.
- Only part of the screen is dark, or the TV menu is too dim to read: These symptoms may point to an internal issue rather than a source setting.
LG USA Support identifies Energy Saving and an incorrectly set Picture Mode as common causes of a dark or dim picture. Its troubleshooting guidance was published July 28, 2026: How to fix a dark or dim picture on your LG TV.

Set Picture Mode to Standard
Use Standard as the first test; it is a less aggressive adjustment than Vivid. LG’s menu labels vary by model and webOS version, so treat these paths as starting points. Select the mode while viewing the input that looks dark.

- 2021 and newer TVs (webOS 6.0 or later): Settings → All Settings → Picture → Select Mode → Standard.
- 2020 and older TVs (webOS 5.0 or earlier): Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → Picture Mode. Select Standard if available.
Vivid is another option on some models if Standard does not provide enough brightness, but it may produce a less natural-looking picture. Check the result on the affected source.
Turn Energy Saving off
Energy Saving can reduce brightness, and some versions may change it according to ambient conditions. The setting may be named Energy Saving Step, and its location depends on the TV’s year and software.

- 2026 and newer (webOS 26 or later): Settings → All Settings → System → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off.
- 2022 and newer (webOS 22 or later): Settings → All Settings → General → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off.
- 2021 (webOS 6.0): Settings → Support → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off.
- 2020 and older (webOS 5.0 or earlier): Settings → All Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Off.
These are LG USA’s listed paths, not universal labels for every model. If a path does not match your TV, check its manual or LG support for the model-specific instructions. - Switch to another TV input or app. If those look normal, focus on the affected source.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both the TV and source device, then check the picture again.
- If the issue remains isolated to that HDMI source, test with a known-good cable if one is available. A replacement cable is a diagnostic option only when the symptom is limited to that connection, not a general fix for a dark screen.
For an antenna or broadcast source, check that its connection is secure as well. LG lists loose HDMI or antenna connections among the possible causes of a dark picture.

Reset the picture settings if the picture is still dim
A picture reset can undo settings changes that are difficult to find. It resets picture settings, so you may need to set your preferred picture mode again afterward.
- 2021 and newer: Settings → All Settings → Picture → Advanced Settings → Reset.
- 2020 and older: Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Mode Settings → Reset.
Some models also support an AV Reset shortcut: press Mute three times, then choose AV Reset. LG says this picture-and-sound initialization shortcut is not supported on every model; check the manual or model support page before relying on it. When to contact LG or a technician
Get help if the settings menu is too dark to read, one section of the screen remains dark, or the picture stays dim after checking Picture Mode, turning Energy Saving off, checking relevant connections, and resetting picture settings. LG says these symptoms may indicate an internal issue. An out-of-warranty service fee may apply.
