To register an LG Magic Remote, turn on the TV, wait about 20 seconds, point the remote at the screen, and press the scroll wheel (OK). A confirmation message should appear. If the remote was paired before, or the pointer has disappeared, use the troubleshooting steps below; reset combinations vary by remote generation and TV model.
Register a Magic Remote for the first time
- Install working batteries in the remote.
- Turn on the LG TV and wait about 20 seconds, as LG’s current registration guide directs.
- Point the remote toward the TV.
- Press the scroll wheel, also labeled Wheel or OK.
- Wait for the on-screen confirmation that registration is complete.
LG says the remote should pair automatically and show a confirmation message. If it does not, turn the TV off and back on, then repeat the registration step. The LG AN-MR500 manual gives this same basic sequence. Exact steps can vary, so follow the manual for your TV and remote if these instructions do not match their buttons or menus.

Reconnect a remote that was already registered
Unpairing and re-pairing controls differ among Magic Remote generations. Identify your remote’s buttons and check the instructions for your TV model before trying a combination; do not assume one reset sequence works for every remote.
LG’s current general sequence
LG’s USA guide says to hold BACK and SETTINGS together for at least five seconds. When the unpairing message appears, press the Wheel (OK) to register again.

Sequences specified for particular TV years
- 2021 and 2025 models: LG’s guide specifies holding HOME and SETTINGS for at least five seconds, then following the on-screen registration instructions.
- 2020 models: Hold Guide until the instructions appear, then follow them.
- AN-MR500: Its owner manual specifies holding BACK and Home for five seconds to deregister, then pressing Wheel (OK) to register again.
LG’s troubleshooting guidance also distinguishes newer remotes from older remotes with or without a Guide button. If your remote’s layout does not match a listed procedure, consult the manual for that remote and TV rather than trying button combinations at random.
Fix a missing pointer
A missing pointer does not necessarily mean the remote is broken. LG identifies depleted batteries, an unsupported remote, Audio Guidance, a lost wireless connection, interference, a temporary system issue, and hardware problems as possible causes.

Check batteries, buttons, and compatibility
- If no buttons respond, start by replacing the batteries.
- If power or volume works but the pointer does not appear, check Audio Guidance and then re-register the remote using the procedure for its model.
- Confirm that the remote is supported by your exact TV model. Not every Magic Remote works with every LG TV.
Turn off Audio Guidance
LG’s pointer troubleshooting guide gives these menu paths. The labels can vary by model:
- 2021 and later, webOS 6.0 or later: Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Audio Guidance off.
- 2020 and earlier, webOS 5.0 or earlier: Settings → All Settings → Accessibility → Audio Guidance off.
Reduce possible wireless interference
Move potential interference sources away from the TV and remote, and make sure there is a clear path between them. LG’s pointer guide recommends keeping a Wi-Fi router at least 20 cm from the TV. The AN-MR500 manual discusses 2.4 GHz interference, obstacles, a stated 10 m operating range, and placing a router more than 1 m away. These recommendations are document- and model-specific, not a universal distance rule; use the manual for your equipment.

Check voice features separately
Basic Wheel (OK) registration does not require the voice-recognition setup described by LG. Voice use may require an internet connection; LG also advises checking that you are signed in to your LG account, have accepted the voice-recognition terms, and have selected a supported menu language for your region. A working pointer therefore does not, by itself, confirm that voice recognition is ready.

Verify compatibility before buying a replacement
Check the exact TV model against the replacement remote’s compatibility list or manual. For example, LG UK says its 2025 AI Magic Remote, model AKB76046801, is compatible only with 2023, 2024, and 2025 model-year LG TVs, and cautions that some listed features may not apply to the 2023 and 2024 TVs. This is a model-specific example, not evidence that the remote works with other TV years or in every region. See LG UK’s compatibility information.

Consider replacement when the remote is missing, damaged, or confirmed unsupported. For a remote that is present and appears functional, first check batteries, Audio Guidance, interference, and model-specific pairing.

A factory reset can erase installed apps, account sign-ins, Wi-Fi passwords, channel settings, and other saved information. Try the remote checks and re-pairing steps first. LG provides different reset-menu paths for different TV model eras, so use the instructions for your exact TV rather than relying on a universal menu path.
