LG C4 OLED vs Sony A95K: Can a Discounted Mid-Range TV Beat Sony’s Old Flagship?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The LG C4 is the better all-round buy for most people, especially gamers and PC users. The Sony A95K can still be the more compelling TV for films, vivid HDR color and built-in sound—but only if its price, condition and warranty make sense.

There is a date mismatch in the original comparison: the C4 is LG’s 2024 mid-range OLED, not a 2025 TV; the A95K is Sony’s 2022 flagship QD-OLED. This is a newer mid-range set against an older premium one. Compare their current prices at the same screen size, not their launch positions.

At a glance: which TV is better for you?

What matters most Better fit Why
Best all-round value LG C4 Newer generation, broader size range and more flexible gaming connections.
Movies and streaming Sony A95K Strong film processing, vivid QD-OLED color and screen-based audio.
Console gaming LG C4 Four HDMI 2.1 inputs and Dolby Vision gaming support.
PC gaming LG C4 Up to 4K/144Hz, G-Sync and FreeSync Premium, plus 42- and 48-inch sizes.
Built-in TV sound Sony A95K Acoustic Surface Audio+ makes the screen part of the sound system.
Price is close to a newer model Neither automatically Check the newer LG C5 or another current OLED before paying a premium for old stock.

The core trade-off is practical: the C4 is the more versatile display, while the A95K is a premium movie-oriented set whose strengths remain appealing if you find a well-supported clearance unit at a substantial discount.

Picture quality: color versus processing

Where the Sony A95K stands out

QD-OLED gives the A95K an advantage in color volume: bright colors can look particularly saturated and vivid. Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR is designed for upscaling, HDR tone mapping and motion handling, and independent reviews describe the set as especially accomplished with film, broadcast and lower-quality video. That can matter if much of your viewing is streaming at variable quality rather than pristine 4K.

This is not a guarantee that every scene will look better on the Sony. Processing preferences are subjective, and source quality, picture settings, calibration and viewing distance all affect the result. For Sony’s movie-focused assessment, see What Hi-Fi’s A95K review and TechRadar’s A95K review.

Where the LG C4 makes a strong case

The C4 delivers OLED’s deep blacks and contrast, Dolby Vision support and a punchy image with useful picture controls, including Filmmaker Mode. Reviews describe it as an improvement over the C3 and a strong mid-range OLED, while noting that it does not reach the brightness of flagship OLEDs or the color impact of the best QD-OLED sets. See TechRadar’s C4 review and What Hi-Fi’s C4 review.

Brightness and room conditions

There is no single brightness figure that settles this comparison. OLED output depends on whether a scene contains a small highlight or fills most of the screen, as well as picture mode, calibration and test method. A vivid QD-OLED highlight can also appear more colorful without proving that the Sony is brighter in every situation. Neither should be treated as an LCD-style solution for sustained full-screen brightness in a very bright room.

Which is better for movies?

For a film-first viewer, the A95K has the stronger case. Its combination of saturated HDR color, Sony’s processing and motion presentation, and screen-based sound makes it a more self-contained premium movie TV. It is particularly attractive if you watch a lot of film, broadcast television or compressed streams and value natural-looking processing.

The C4 is still a capable movie screen, and may be the smarter choice if you already use a soundbar or receiver, want a smaller 42- or 48-inch set, or want Dolby Vision gaming alongside film playback. The Sony’s sound advantage matters most when you will actually rely on the TV speakers; it does not replace a dedicated surround system.

Gaming: the C4 is more flexible

PS5 and Xbox Series X

Both TVs support 4K/120Hz gaming, VRR and ALLM. The C4’s four HDMI 2.1 inputs make it easier to keep several devices connected—for example, a PS5, Xbox, PC and eARC soundbar—without swapping cables or adding a switch. LG also supports Dolby Vision gaming.

The A95K supports Sony’s PS5-oriented Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. But only HDMI 3 and 4 are specified for 4K/120, VRR and ALLM, so a household with several high-bandwidth sources has fewer convenient ports. Reviews also flag that the A95K cannot combine Dolby Vision HDR with 4K/120Hz gaming. Dolby Vision support for video playback should not be mistaken for unrestricted Dolby Vision gaming at that resolution and refresh rate. See the Sony specification page and TechRadar’s review.

PC gaming

The C4 is the clear choice if a PC is central to the purchase. It supports up to 4K/144Hz with compatible hardware and advertises NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium. Its 42- and 48-inch versions can also suit a desk or gaming-room setup better than the A95K’s 55-inch minimum. Actual 144Hz operation depends on the graphics card, cable, game and selected resolution; it is not a meaningful advantage for console-only play.

For long desktop sessions, factor in OLED’s susceptibility to image retention or burn-in under particular patterns of prolonged static use. Taskbars, fixed HUDs, news tickers and repeated channel logos are examples of content to consider. Panel-care features help manage risk but do not make it impossible.

Sound, smart TV and screen-size choices

Sound

Sony’s Acoustic Surface Audio+ uses actuators to make the screen produce sound, alongside subwoofers. That is a meaningful built-in audio advantage for viewers who do not want a separate system. If you already plan to use a soundbar or AV receiver, it should carry less weight in the decision.

Smart TV system

The C4 runs webOS 24 and uses LG’s Magic Remote ecosystem; the A95K uses Google TV. Google TV may be a natural fit for people invested in Google services and Chromecast, while webOS offers LG’s interface and LG Channels. App availability varies by country and software version, so check the services you actually use rather than assuming one system is universally better.

Screen size

The C4 range includes 42-, 48-, 55-, 65-, 77- and 83-inch variants in LG’s US listings, while the A95K was marketed in 55- and 65-inch versions. That makes the C4 a much more practical fit for a desk, bedroom or compact room. Compare prices only at the same diagonal size and with the same condition and warranty.

Price, clearance condition and the newer C5

The A95K is a 2022 model, so a listing today may be clearance, open-box, refurbished, used or imported stock. Its former flagship status is not a reason by itself to pay current-flagship money. No dependable current US price is established here; check an authorized retailer at the time you buy.

  • If the C4 is meaningfully cheaper than the A95K, it is usually the better value for mixed use and gaming.
  • If the A95K costs only modestly more and movies, processing and built-in sound are your priorities, it can be worth considering—provided it has a trustworthy warranty and return policy.
  • If the A95K approaches the price of a current OLED, compare against newer models instead of paying for its old flagship positioning.
  • If the C4 is close in price to the newer C5, the C5 is the more natural comparison. LG identifies the C5 as its 2025 successor, with Alpha 9 Gen8 processing and 144Hz gaming support: LG C5 product page.

For an older or open-box A95K, confirm the exact model suffix, US warranty eligibility, return window, dead-pixel policy, included stand, remote and accessories, and whether the set has previously been mounted or used. Ask for panel-hour information if the seller can provide it. A modest price saving is not worth much if the warranty or panel history is unclear.

OLED longevity and who should skip both

Both TVs use self-emissive OLED pixels and can experience image retention or burn-in under particular patterns of prolonged static use. Pixel-refresh and panel-care features reduce risk but are not a guarantee. A used A95K deserves particular scrutiny because the previous usage pattern may be difficult to verify; there is no reliable like-for-like failure-rate comparison here that establishes one model as longer-lasting.

Consider a current mini-LED LCD instead if your room is very bright and you expect strong full-screen brightness, if your use involves static desktop elements for long periods, or if a large screen at a lower cost matters more than OLED contrast. The C4 and A95K are not automatically right for every room or usage pattern.

Who should buy each TV?

Choose the LG C4 if:

  • You play on PC or want the option of 4K/144Hz.
  • You have several HDMI 2.1 devices or need flexible port allocation.
  • You want Dolby Vision gaming.
  • You need a 42- or 48-inch OLED.
  • You will use a soundbar or receiver and want the stronger all-round gaming feature set.

Choose the Sony A95K if:

  • Films, premium streaming and Sony’s processing are your top priorities.
  • You prefer the vivid HDR color presentation of QD-OLED.
  • You value better-than-typical built-in TV sound and do not plan to add a sound system.
  • You mainly use one console and do not need several high-bandwidth HDMI connections.
  • You find a well-conditioned unit with a substantial discount, clear return terms and credible warranty coverage.

Skip the A95K if:

  • Its price is near a current-generation OLED.
  • It is open-box or used without a meaningful return period or clear warranty.
  • You need multiple 4K/120Hz devices or 4K/120Hz Dolby Vision gaming.

Skip the C4 if:

  • It costs close to the newer C5.
  • You prioritize the most vivid QD-OLED HDR color or the Sony’s built-in audio.
  • Your viewing is dominated by poor-quality video and Sony’s processing matters more to you than gaming flexibility.
