WePC’s 2023 “best gaming PC” was a value-focused $1,500-class build built around an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. It was a sensible 1080p/high-refresh and 1440p system for its time, but it is not a current 2026 shopping list. The page was updated March 16, 2023, still contains “Best Gaming PC in 2022” wording, and includes technical and pricing ambiguities that matter to buyers today.

This guide documents the original recommendation, corrects its errors, explains the build-versus-prebuilt trade-off, and shows how to use the underlying idea when choosing a modern system.

The original WePC build at a glance

WePC defined “best” as balanced performance per dollar rather than the fastest possible computer. Its target was approximately $1,500 for the desktop itself; that figure was not a verified current checkout total and does not necessarily include Windows, a monitor, peripherals, tax, shipping, or assembly tools.

Component WePC selection Assessment today
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Strong 2023 gaming processor, but an older AM4/DDR4 platform with limited upgrade runway.
CPU cooler Phanteks Glacier One 240MPH D-RGB Capable 240 mm liquid cooler, but elaborate for a 65 W-class CPU.
Motherboard ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) Feature-rich, though potentially excessive for a Ryzen 5 5600X gaming build.
Memory Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2×8 GB) DDR4-3600 Normal for 2023; 32 GB is a more comfortable baseline for a new system now.
GPU MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB Good 1440p-class 2023 card, but its age and 8 GB VRAM are more restrictive in newer games.
Storage Samsung 980 1 TB NVMe SSD Usable capacity and speed for the period; verify the exact model specification.
Case Phanteks Eclipse P360A Mesh-front, airflow-oriented case.
Power supply EVGA 600 BQ Potentially adequate for this exact hardware, but age, quality tier, connectors, and upgrade headroom need checking.

WePC says it assembles recommendations in-house, checks compatibility, benchmarks games and general workloads, and tests overclocking. Those are WePC’s stated methods, not independent verification by this article.

What performance was the build targeting?

In its 2023 context, the parts were aimed at high-FPS 1080p and 1440p gaming, including esports. Actual results vary by game, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling, drivers, and monitor resolution. The article does not establish a universal frame-rate guarantee, and its “best” label should not be read as a claim of maximum 4K performance.

Component-by-component analysis

Ryzen 5 5600X

The six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 5600X was a strong mainstream gaming CPU, with a stated 65 W TDP and boost clock up to 4.6 GHz. In a new 2026 build, AM4 and DDR4 can still make sense when a complete platform is exceptionally cheap or when upgrading an existing AM4 computer. Buying into the platform at an ordinary price offers less future CPU and memory flexibility than a current platform.

RTX 3060 Ti

The RTX 3060 Ti was the performance centerpiece. It remains potentially useful as a used, clearance, or refurbished card when priced appropriately, but it is a previous-generation product. Its 8 GB VRAM can constrain texture-heavy or ray-traced games, and a new purchase at an inflated price would be difficult to justify. Choose by current performance, features, power efficiency, and price—not by the model name alone.

  • Robust power solution: 12+2 teamed power stages with ProCool power connector, high-quality alloy chokes and durable capacitors

Cooling: effective, but possibly overbuilt

A 240 mm liquid cooler can keep the 5600X quiet and supports experimentation with automatic boosting or overclocking. It also adds a pump, radiator, installation requirements, and a long-term failure point. A quality tower air cooler would normally be a simpler value choice. Radiator placement and fan orientation matter, and money saved here could have funded a faster GPU, 32 GB of memory, or more storage.

Motherboard: X570 versus B550

The ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus Wi-Fi supplied PCIe 4.0, wireless networking, and overclocking support according to WePC. Those features are legitimate, but many gaming buyers would receive the needed functionality from a less expensive B550 board. X570 is easier to defend when you specifically need additional PCIe connectivity or expansion; it is not automatically better for frame rates.

Memory

Two 8 GB modules enabled dual-channel DDR4-3600 operation, an appropriate 2023 recommendation. For a new machine, 32 GB is more comfortable when games run alongside browsers, launchers, streaming software, mods, or productivity applications. Use a matched kit, confirm motherboard compatibility and BIOS support, and avoid assuming that four populated DIMM slots will run at the same speed as two.

SSD

A 1 TB NVMe drive remains usable, although modern game libraries can fill it quickly. WePC’s page gives inconsistent Samsung 980 read/write figures and appears to vary the ordering of those numbers. Do not repeat a performance figure without checking the exact drive model and manufacturer specification; capacity, endurance, warranty, and expansion options are more useful buying criteria.

Case and airflow

The Eclipse P360A’s mesh front prioritizes airflow over a sealed glass-front design. A sensible intake-and-exhaust layout, clean filters, and adequate fan control matter more to temperatures than RGB branding.

Power supply

WePC describes the semi-modular, Bronze-rated EVGA 600 BQ as sufficient for the listed RTX 3060 Ti configuration. Electrical wattage is only one part of PSU suitability. Confirm the unit’s condition, protections, warranty, connectors, and transient headroom, especially if buying old inventory or planning a substantially faster GPU. A new build should use a current, reputable model with appropriate upgrade margin rather than copying the 600 BQ blindly.

Errors and ambiguities in the original page

  • VRAM error: the listed RTX 3060 Ti is an 8 GB card, while prose reportedly calls it 12 GB. The corrected figure is 8 GB.
  • Date mismatch: the page was updated March 16, 2023 but retains “Best Gaming PC in 2022” language.
  • SSD figures: Samsung 980 read/write specifications are presented inconsistently; verify the exact model before quoting them.
  • Unclear total: approximately $1,500 is a target budget, not a reliable archived or current full-build total.
  • Benchmarks: WePC describes testing, but the searchable article does not provide a comprehensive game-by-game table with settings, averages, 1% lows, drivers, and test dates.

Original parts and claims are documented on WePC’s build page.

Build versus prebuilt

Self-build Prebuilt
Usually more control over GPU, PSU, board, cooler, case, and storage. Assembly, Windows setup, and initial troubleshooting are handled for you.
Often better component-level value and easier standard-part upgrades. One vendor handles the initial system warranty and return process.
You own compatibility checks, installation, cable management, and fault diagnosis. OEM boards, power supplies, cooling, or cases may restrict upgrades.
Best for buyers comfortable selecting and installing parts. Useful when convenience, support, or a sale outweighs the assembly premium.

WePC generally favors self-building for value while acknowledging that prebuilts reduce the barrier for first-time buyers and arrive tested and ready to use.

The historical prebuilt alternatives

Corsair Vengeance a7200

The highlighted Corsair configuration lists a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti, 16 GB DDR4-3200, 1 TB NVMe SSD, MSI B550 motherboard, 240 mm Corsair liquid cooler, 750 W 80 Plus Gold PSU, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, Windows 10 Home, and a two-year warranty. See the manufacturer page. It is legacy hardware; verify whether a listing is new, used, refurbished, and covered by a current warranty. A search-result price signal associated with accessories must not be treated as the PC’s price.

ASUS ROG Strix G35CZ and CyberPowerPC Gamer Xtreme

These were historical alternatives named by WePC. Exact configurations, prices, stock, operating systems, and warranties vary by country and date, so the model names alone are not purchasing recommendations.

How to adapt the idea for a 2026 purchase

Do not silently replace the old parts and call the result the WePC build. Instead, apply its value-balancing method:

  1. Set the display target: choose 1080p, 1440p, or 4K and a 60, 144, 165, 240 Hz, or higher refresh rate.
  2. Match the GPU to the games: esports, rasterized AAA, ray tracing, simulation, and modded games stress different resources. Check VRAM as well as average performance.
  3. Choose the platform: use a current CPU and memory platform for a new system unless AM4 pricing is unusually favorable.
  4. Start at 32 GB RAM: drop to 16 GB only when the budget is genuinely constrained and your workload is light.
  5. Budget for storage: 1 TB works, but provide a second-drive path if your library is large.
  6. Buy the PSU by model: check quality, warranty, connectors, protections, and future GPU headroom.
  7. Prioritize airflow: a mesh case and sensible fan layout are generally more valuable than decorative lighting.
  8. Calculate ownership cost: include Windows, monitor, peripherals, networking hardware, tax, shipping, and any extra fans or storage.

For current prebuilt shopping, CyberPowerPC’s gaming catalog and its deals and configuration page show contemporary platforms, but prices, configurations, and shipping estimates are volatile. Inspect the exact motherboard, PSU, cooler, case, memory layout, and warranty rather than buying on brand name alone.

Prebuilt inspection checklist

  • Exact desktop CPU and GPU model, including VRAM.
  • 16 GB or 32 GB memory, and whether it is single- or dual-channel.
  • SSD capacity, interface, drive model, and room for a second drive.
  • PSU brand, model, wattage, connectors, and warranty.
  • Standard or proprietary motherboard, case, fans, and cooler.
  • Cooling arrangement, expected noise, and dust-filter access.
  • Windows activation, return terms, shipping-damage procedure, and warranty length.
  • Current stock and whether the listed configuration can actually be ordered.

Verdict

WePC’s Ryzen 5 5600X/RTX 3060 Ti system was a credible value-oriented 2023 gaming build for 1080p high refresh and 1440p play. Its historical value is clear, but the 2022/2023 date mismatch, 8 GB-versus-12 GB VRAM error, inconsistent SSD figures, aging AM4 platform, 16 GB memory, and old PSU model prevent it from being a plug-and-play 2026 recommendation. Use the article as a reference for balancing parts—not as a reason to buy legacy components without checking today’s prices, warranties, compatibility, and upgrade path.
