The Linux Foundation says not to register for it and directs interested readers to its career-planning page or certification catalog for other options. The notice does not name one credential as LFCT’s replacement.
Is LFCT certification still valid?
The exam is retired, but that does not by itself erase a certification already earned. If you passed LFCT, your credential was issued with a three-year validity period, according to the Linux Foundation’s 2022 launch announcement. Check the date and status shown on your digital badge or credential record to determine whether yours is still within that period. The Linux Foundation’s retirement notice addresses the exam, not the status of previously issued badges.

No. The Linux Foundation marks the exam retired, so readers should not try to purchase an LFCT exam or renew by registering for a new attempt. The historical launch terms included up to 12 months to schedule and take the exam and one retake during that period; those terms do not describe current availability.

What LFCT covered
LFCT was an intermediate, paid credential for practical Linux and cloud-native operations. Credly describes its coverage as Linux, virtual machines, containers, Git, CI/CD, GitOps, automation, change management, validation and troubleshooting. The exam was 120 minutes, online and proctored, and combined performance-based tasks with multiple-choice questions. Credly’s LFCT credential description.
Historical exam domains
The Linux Foundation’s December 2022 launch announcement gave these domain weights:
Rank #2
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Essential Commands | 20% |
| System Configuration | 15% |
| Troubleshooting | 20% |
| Virtualization and Containers | 20% |
| GitOps Basics | 25% |
GitOps Basics was the largest domain. These percentages describe the retired exam, not a current test blueprint. Linux Foundation’s December 1, 2022 announcement.
What replaced LFCT?
The retirement notice does not identify a direct replacement. Instead, it says: “Please review our Plan Your IT Career page for additional options or search our full catalog by technology areas.” Start with those official resources, then compare credentials against the work you want to do rather than assuming another certificate has the same scope.
When evaluating an alternative, check the issuer and whether the credential is currently listed, exam format, subject coverage, level, prerequisites, validity and renewal rules, and cost. In particular, distinguish Linux administration from container, Kubernetes or GitOps coverage. LFCS or another Linux Foundation credential may suit a particular goal, but the retirement notice does not call any of them an LFCT replacement.
What should you take after LFCT was discontinued?
Choose based on the gap you need to fill. If your goal is hands-on Linux administration, look for a currently available Linux administration credential or course; if your work centers on containers or Kubernetes, prioritize credentials that explicitly assess those skills. Use the current catalog to confirm that the option is open for enrollment and review its present exam and renewal terms before paying.

Historical study route
In February 2024, the Linux Foundation suggested a preparation sequence of Introduction to Linux (LFS101), Fundamentals of Open Source IT and Cloud Computing (LFS200), Linux for Cloud Technicians Essentials (LFS203), and then LFCT. It estimated three to six months depending on experience and said the courses were suggestions, not prerequisites. This is historical guidance for a retired exam, not a current LFCT pathway. The Linux Foundation introduced LFS203 in February 2023 as an online course covering system configuration and administration, command-line work, containers, virtualization, DevOps, Git and troubleshooting. Its launch announcement listed historical prices of $299 for LFS203 or $595 bundled with LFCT. Those prices and bundle terms are not current enrollment guidance; check the catalog for course availability and current pricing. Linux Foundation’s LFS203 announcement.

Does an LFCT badge still prove certification?
A verifiable digital badge is evidence that its holder earned the credential. Its value today depends on the badge’s recorded status and validity dates: the historical credential terms specified three years of validity after passing. Because the exam has been retired, a badge does not indicate that LFCT remains available to new candidates. Share the badge or credential record with its dates visible so an employer can assess the specific qualification and whether it is still in its validity period.
