Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn AI agent can take part in a server deployment through MCP without root access, but only if the permissions are enforced by systems the model cannot talk its way around. The model’s instructions are not a security boundary. A workable setup gives the agent a dedicated identity with only the rights one task needs, exposes only the MCP tools that task requires, supplies credentials at runtime instead of storing them in configuration, and runs execution in a constrained environment. For anything that touches production, the authorization check belongs in the host, the cloud IAM layer, the MCP gateway, or the CI workflow. A human approval step adds review, but it cannot replace those controls.
Why “no root” is not enough
Running the agent or the MCP server as a non-root user limits some kinds of damage, but it does not define what the agent is allowed to do. A non-root account can still hold broad permissions on a cloud subscription, a repository, or a fleet of hosts. Microsoft’s guidance for its Azure MCP Server treats this as the central failure mode: the server runs with its own privileges, and a less-privileged caller can end up using them. In Microsoft’s words, “Don’t let the server act as a deputy that lends its broad privileges to a lower-privileged caller: separate the server’s execution identity from the caller’s authorization, and enforce per-caller permission checks rather than relying solely on the server’s own credentials.” (Microsoft Learn, Azure MCP Server security)

That means you need two separate answers: what the MCP server’s execution identity can reach, and what each calling agent is authorized to request.

The agent
The agent reads the request, decides which tools to call, and acts on the results. Treat its output as untrusted input for any authorization decision. The agent should never be the component that decides whether a deployment is allowed. Its behavior can also be shaped by content it reads, including tool descriptions and tool outputs, which Microsoft’s guidance notes can influence model behavior. Google Cloud’s AI security guidance lists prompt injection and insecure tool chaining, where an agent combines individual tools in unpredictable or malicious ways, among the risks of letting an agent act without approval. (Google Cloud)
The MCP client and server
MCP defines how tools and resources are exposed to a model, but the protocol does not decide who may use them. Authorization has to be implemented on the server side for each operation, and the client’s configuration should not be the only thing limiting what gets called.
The deployment identity
Use a distinct workload or service identity for the agent or deployment job, scoped to a specific task and target. Do not give the server a broad identity and hope the model uses it carefully. Google Cloud and Microsoft both point toward this separation. (Google Cloud, Microsoft)

Run the server in a restricted container, a sandbox, or a controlled CI job, and limit what it can reach on the filesystem and the network. Microsoft’s guidance for local Azure MCP Server use recommends sandboxed execution and says not to use a local Azure MCP Server for production data or production credentials. That is a product-specific warning. It does not establish a rule for every MCP server, but it is a useful question to ask of any local server you run.

Choosing a deployment shape
Docker documents three MCP forms: Docker MCP through a gateway, local stdio, and remote Streamable HTTP or SSE. (Docker MCP documentation) In practice, deployment patterns combine one of these forms with a choice about where the agent works. The table compares the common patterns by the boundary each one depends on.
| Pattern | Where the MCP server runs | Boundary you rely on | Exposure to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local stdio MCP process | On the developer’s or agent host | The host user’s permissions, plus any isolation you add | Anything the host user can reach. Microsoft advises against using a local Azure MCP Server for production data or production credentials. |
| MCP server reached through Docker’s gateway | Launched and routed by the gateway | Gateway policy, plus the isolation the server runs with | Gateway policy covers gateway-handled requests. Direct connections from inside a sandbox are not covered by that policy and need network controls. |
| Remote endpoint (Streamable HTTP or SSE) | A server you operate or have verified | Endpoint trust, verified TLS, per-caller checks on the server, and gateway controls | A compromised or misconfigured endpoint, and an authorized caller misusing a tool it is allowed to call |
| Agent prepares, CI deploys | The agent works in a constrained job; a CI workflow runs the deployment | CI permissions, an ephemeral runner, and a narrowly scoped deployment credential | Credential reach inside the job, and agent output used as an input to the pipeline |
For each pattern, answer these questions before you choose it:
- Which host, repository, cloud resources, or deployment actions are authorized?
- Does the caller have its own identity, separate from the server’s execution identity?
- How long does each credential live, how is it delivered, and how is it rotated and revoked?
- Which tools can the agent call, and which of them are required for the task?
- Which files, processes, and network destinations can the agent or server reach?
- Who approves consequential actions, where are requests logged, and how is a bad deployment reversed?
Building the boundary, step by step
The steps below are ordered so that each one narrows what the next one has to protect. Commands and exact settings differ by server, cloud, and CI platform, so verify them against the current documentation for your tools.
1. Name the task, the target, and the allowed actions
Write the deployment as a narrow statement: the service, the environment, and the one action permitted, such as pulling a tagged image and restarting a single service. Anything outside that statement is outside the grant. Writing it down first gives you something concrete to scope every later control against.

2. Give the agent its own identity
Create a workload or service identity for the agent or the deployment job, separate from your personal account and from the MCP server’s execution identity. Grant it rights on the named target only. Microsoft’s guidance favors workload identities over long-lived shared secrets. The server should still check each caller’s permissions on each operation, so a correct identity on the caller side does not remove the need for checks on the server side.
3. Expose only the tools the task needs
Docker’s MCP tool documentation describes a tools field that allowlists specific tools for an MCP server entry in the agent’s configuration. Use it to remove any operation the deployment does not need, such as delete or scaling operations, if the server offers them. An allowlist reduces the actions available to the model. It is not server-side authorization, so a permitted tool still needs its own checks.
4. Supply credentials at runtime
Prefer workload identity. If a static credential is unavoidable, hold it in a vault rather than in source code or plaintext configuration, as Microsoft recommends. Docker’s secrets guide describes several runtime sources: environment variables, Compose secrets, environment files, and credential helpers. (Docker secrets guide) Pick the mechanism your runtime handles safely, and check the current documentation for your tool, because secret handling changes between releases.
- Scope each credential to one target and one action.
- Keep credentials out of repositories, container images, and the text the agent is given.
- Confirm that a credential can be revoked without changing the MCP server.
5. Confine where the agent and the server run
Run the MCP server in a restricted container, a sandbox, or a controlled CI job, and limit its filesystem and network reach to what the deployment requires. Local servers should be isolated and kept off untrusted networks. For CI, an ephemeral runner limits how long credentials persist on a machine and what the job can write. Docker’s headless CI guide shows a review agent with read-only repository permissions running on an ephemeral hosted runner. (Docker CI guide) That is an example of the pattern, not a deployment specification.

6. Secure the remote path
For a remote endpoint, verify the endpoint before you trust it, verify its TLS certificate, and configure the client to fail closed on certificate errors rather than letting a user click through a warning. Microsoft describes an enforcement gateway in front of its remote Azure MCP deployment that performs token validation, rate limiting, restricted tool paths, and audit logging. Treat that as Azure’s architecture, and build equivalent controls in your own stack if you run a remote endpoint.
7. Check whether gateway policy covers the path the agent actually uses
Docker states that its MCP policy applies to registrations and to requests handled by its gateway. It does not apply to direct MCP connections made from inside a sandbox. (Docker sandbox MCP access controls) If an agent inside a sandbox can reach an MCP server directly, the gateway policy is not enforced for that connection. Add network controls that block those direct paths, and test that the blocking works from inside the sandbox.
8. Put the production gate outside the agent
Production changes should require an authorization check that the agent cannot edit. Examples include an IAM policy on the target resource, a protected environment or branch in CI, or a rule in the gateway. Hold the narrow deployment credential only in the step that performs the deployment, so it is not available to the agent during its reasoning or tool calls. The exact mechanism depends on your host and CI platform.
9. Log consequential calls and define the reversal
Record each MCP call with the caller identity, the tool name, the target, and the result, and store those records where the agent cannot modify them. Vendor guidance does not prescribe a universal rollback design. Decide in advance how a bad deployment is reversed, for example by redeploying the previous tagged version, and who is allowed to trigger that reversal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Human approval: a second check, not the gate
Google Cloud’s AI security and safety guidance separates an agent-only mode from modes where the agent waits for approval. Of the first it says, “In the AO mode of operation, an agent takes action without waiting for approval.” It also warns that security in that mode “relies entirely on the agent’s programming and is vulnerable to prompt injection, insecure tool chaining (where an agent combines individual tools in unpredictable or malicious ways), and naive error handling.” (Google Cloud)
Approval reduces risk, but it has limits. Google’s guidance warns that human reviewers can approve malicious or destructive actions. Place approval on top of enforced permissions. Make the approval request show the exact target, tool, and parameters the credential will act on, so the reviewer is judging the same operation the system will run.
Quick Recap
What this guidance does not settle
- There is no universal recipe. Vendor guidance describes controls and examples. It does not provide a ready-to-run deployment for every server, cloud, agent, or MCP implementation.
- Product-specific warnings stay product-specific. Microsoft’s advice about sandboxed execution and production data applies to its local Azure MCP Server. Check whether the MCP server you run has equivalent guidance before assuming the same rule applies.
- No measured benefit is published. The vendor pages linked here describe what to do, but none quantifies how much risk a given control removes. Treat each control as a required design choice, not as a measured reduction.
- Documentation changes. MCP tooling, secret handling, and gateway features change between releases. Recheck each linked page before copying any configuration.
