Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

That is his thesis, presented in a Bitcoin Magazine video feature published October 6, 2026. It is not an observed result. And the “$300T” in the headline is an approximate figure that needs careful sourcing.
What the thesis says
The argument goes like this. Property has long been more than shelter or rental income. People also hold it as a savings vehicle, so its price may include a premium for that “money-like” function. If Bitcoin offers a scarcer, more portable and more divisible alternative, some savers might hold less property for that purpose. Wankum develops the idea in his book Digital Real Estate, which Bitcoin Magazine links to. One framing question from the book’s introduction is: “What happens when real estate no longer needs to function as money?”

Nothing in the available sources shows this shift is happening at a measurable scale today. They also do not forecast property prices, or show how mortgages, collateral or developers would be affected. Treat those as open questions.

The number needs a date and an attribution.
- McKinsey’s own wording. The McKinsey Global Institute report The rise and rise of the global balance sheet: How productively are we using our wealth? (November 15, 2021) says: “These savings have found their way instead into real estate, which in 2020 accounted for two-thirds of net worth.”
- Scope. That research covers ten countries that together account for about 60 percent of global GDP. It is not a worldwide census.
- Wankum’s version. In a interview transcript, he attributes an estimate of roughly $300 trillion, and 67 percent of global wealth, to a 2021 McKinsey study. The McKinsey report located here states the two-thirds-of-net-worth finding; it does not directly present $300 trillion as a current valuation of global real estate.
So read “$300T” as an approximate framing reported by Wankum, tied to 2020 data, rather than a freshly measured 2026 market value.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What Bitcoin’s supply rules do and do not show
The scarcity half of the argument rests on protocol design. Bitcoin’s issuance is capped, as described in the Bitcoin.org developer documentation, and an SEC-filed issuer report also discusses the creation of new bitcoin and limits on supply. These sources establish how supply works. They do not establish that investors will swap property for Bitcoin, that Bitcoin’s price will rise, or that housing prices will fall. Those are economic predictions, and they depend on demand, which no protocol rule guarantees.
Bitcoin and property: where they differ
The two assets do different jobs, so a single winner cannot be declared from monetary scarcity alone. The sources here provide no comparative return data, so the table below lists axes for thinking, not a ranking.

| Axis | Real estate | Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Utility and income | Provides shelter or workspace; can earn rent | No built-in income; value depends on market demand |
| Liquidity and divisibility | Sales are slow and lumpy | Highly divisible and transferable |
| Financing and leverage | Mortgage markets are well established | Borrowing against it exists, but conditions differ |
| Holding costs | Maintenance, taxes, insurance | Custody and security responsibility |
| Volatility | Generally slower-moving prices | Typically larger price swings |
| Exposure to local rules | Zoning, rent rules and local demand matter a lot | Less tied to one locality, but subject to regulation and tax treatment |
The table’s entries are general characterizations, not measured results from the cited sources.
How to read the claim
The thesis is most useful as a question: how much of a property’s price reflects its function as a store of value rather than its use? Wankum’s answer is “a lot,” and the McKinsey finding that real estate made up two-thirds of net worth in its sampled countries shows why the question matters. Whether Bitcoin can actually absorb part of that demand is a prediction, not a finding. Readers who want his full argument can follow the book and video linked above.
