Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 9i is getting attention for a feature that sounds like science fiction: an invisible under-display camera. Instead of a notch or a bezel camera, the webcam sits beneath the screen, so the top edge can stay clean and distraction-free.
If you’re considering the Yoga Slim 9i, the right question isn’t just whether the camera is “invisible.” It’s how well it performs in real calls, what it does under different lighting, and how to verify and troubleshoot it if you run into issues.

What Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i means by an invisible under-display camera
An under-display camera places the lens and sensor beneath the LCD or OLED panel. The panel has a camera zone that’s optimized to let light from the lens through and to help the system capture your image without a visible camera module at the top.

“Invisible” is mostly about appearance: the camera isn’t sitting in a traditional cutout, and Lenovo aims to keep the display uninterrupted. The trade-off is that the imaging path goes through extra layers, so quality can differ from a conventional webcam—especially in low light.
How under-display cameras work (and what to expect)
Under-display systems rely on a dedicated “camera-active” area of the screen. That area typically uses tuned pixel behavior or transmission characteristics so the camera can form an image beneath the display.
Image quality differences vs a traditional webcam
- Sharpness: Under-display cameras can look slightly softer because the sensor is behind the display stack.
- Color and contrast: You may see more compression-like behavior in some apps, depending on how the camera pipeline is tuned.
- Dynamic range: Bright backgrounds and dark faces can challenge the camera’s auto-exposure.
In practice, many under-display cameras still work for video conferencing, but you’ll usually get the most consistent results in controlled indoor light.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Moire, glare, and low-light behavior
Two common side effects come up with under-display designs:
- Moire: Screen sub-pixel patterns and fine textures can create shimmering or interference in the camera image.
- Glare: The display can reflect ambient light, and the camera’s lens-to-panel path can amplify certain reflections.
Low-light performance is usually the biggest differentiator. If you’re used to a standard webcam that does okay at dusk, an under-display camera may require brighter lighting or closer framing.
Why Lenovo chose this design: privacy, aesthetics, and usability
The appeal is obvious: fewer visible hardware elements on the lid. That can make the laptop look cleaner, and it also reduces the “where is the camera?” anxiety that comes with top-bezel webcams.
Privacy features still matter, though. An under-display camera can’t replace a hardware shutter. If you want stronger privacy control, you should confirm whether Lenovo includes a camera switch, an app-level indicator, or a physical shutter on your exact Yoga Slim 9i configuration.

How to confirm the feature on your Yoga Slim 9i
Because under-display implementations vary by model and region, you should verify your specific unit. Start with visual cues, then confirm in Windows.
Visual checks
- No top notch/cutout: If there’s no visible webcam aperture at the top bezel, the system may rely on an under-display camera.
- Camera-active zone: When the camera app is open, some units show a subtle change in brightness or sensitivity in the camera area (not always obvious).
Software checks in Windows
Assuming your Yoga Slim 9i runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, use these checks:
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Confirm Camera access is enabled.
- Scroll to Let apps access your camera and check permissions for your calling app.
- Open Device Manager: press Win + X > Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices).
- Look for the camera device name (it may be branded by the imaging vendor, not just “Lenovo”).
If you see a single internal “camera” device but no physical camera module around the bezel, that aligns with an under-display design.
Camera test checklist
- Open the Windows Camera app.
- Turn on a lamp or sit near a bright window.
- Look for the camera preview and confirm it updates in real time.
- Watch for focus behavior: if the preview is soft and won’t lock, treat it as a troubleshooting item.
- Test a second app (like Microsoft Teams or Zoom) to see if the issue is app-specific.
Setup and best practices for reliable video calls
The invisible camera still needs the right environment. With under-display optics, lighting and positioning matter more than with older webcams.
Set the right privacy permissions
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Ensure the app you use (Teams, Zoom, Google Meet via browser, etc.) has permission.
- For Windows 11, also check whether you’re blocked by Let desktop apps access your camera.
If you use multiple conferencing tools, enable access for each one once, then confirm they remember the permission.
Use the right apps and settings
Different apps use different capture pipelines (and sometimes different exposure/white balance defaults). If video looks worse in one app, try:
- Switch the camera source to the correct device in the app’s device picker.
- Turn off “auto” enhancements if they cause artifacts.
- Update the app (for example, Teams and Zoom frequently adjust webcam processing).
If you see artifacts only in one specific app, the camera hardware may be fine—your settings may be the culprit.

Lighting guidance that actually works
For under-display cameras, aim for even front-facing light:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Best: A lamp in front of you at about eye level or slightly above.
- Okay: Window light from the front.
- Worst: Strong overhead lights that cast shadows on your face, or lighting behind you.
If you have to choose, brighter and closer usually beats distant and dark. You’ll also get fewer exposure swings when you keep your face in the same general area of the frame.
Common problems and troubleshooting
When an under-display camera misbehaves, it’s usually one of four things: permissions, drivers/firmware, app capture settings, or lighting/placement.
Camera shows a black or blurry image
- Restart the laptop and close all camera-using apps.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and verify access.
- Check Device Manager > Cameras and look for warning icons.
- Update the camera driver: in Device Manager, right-click the camera device > Update driver.
- If Windows Update has pending updates, run Windows Update first, then retest.
If the preview is black in every app, focus on permissions and driver health. If it only happens in one app, switch app settings and test another tool.
The camera takes a long time to focus or hunts
Under-display cameras can struggle when there’s insufficient contrast. Try:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Move slightly closer to the screen (often 40–70 cm is a good zone).
- Increase front-facing light by one or two steps (turn on a lamp, not just the overhead).
- Avoid shooting against patterned backgrounds (busy curtains can trigger moire-like artifacts).
If focus is consistently slow even with good lighting, update camera drivers and check Lenovo support for camera firmware updates specific to your model.
Apps can’t access the camera
- Check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- In the app, confirm the camera is selected correctly (some apps default to a different device).
- Close browser tabs that might be using the camera (Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can keep permissions active).
- Restart Windows if the camera remains “in use” after closing apps.
Browser-based calls add another variable: browser permission state. Revoke and re-grant the camera permission in the browser’s site settings if needed.

Video looks washed out or has artifacts
Artifacts can be exposure-related, processing-related, or texture-related. Try this order:
- Improve lighting and reduce backlighting.
- Switch the background to something plain (wall or desk) for a quick test.
- In your app, turn off background effects (they can intensify artifacts).
- Update the app to the latest version.
If artifacts vanish in good light with a plain background, the camera is working and the issue is environment + processing.
Under-display visibility is inconsistent
Some under-display cameras behave differently across brightness ranges, especially if the screen itself is at very low brightness. If you notice the camera “works” only at certain screen settings:
- Adjust screen brightness to a moderate level (don’t test at 5–10%).
- Re-test in the Camera app first, then in your conferencing tool.
- Disable any “adaptive brightness” modes temporarily to see if it’s the trigger.
If the behavior persists, firmware/driver updates are your best next step. Under-display implementations can require tuning as software versions evolve.

In-display/invisible camera trade-offs
- Pros: Clean lid design, less bezel clutter, often no physical aperture on the top edge.
- Cons: Potential softness in low light, more sensitivity to lighting/background, and sometimes visible camera zones depending on panel behavior.
External webcam options
If video quality is the priority (streaming, presentations, or professional calls), an external webcam can be the most consistent path. You can still enjoy the Yoga Slim 9i’s design while using a dedicated webcam when it matters.

Who should buy Yoga Slim 9i with an under-display camera
- You want a clean top bezel: If lid aesthetics matter, this design is the point.
- Your meetings are daylight/office-lit: Under-display cameras tend to do better with consistent front-facing light.
- You’re okay with minor quality trade-offs: Expect slightly different look/processing compared to a classic webcam.
- You need strong privacy control: Verify whether you have a hardware shutter or reliable software indicators on your exact configuration.
FAQ
Is Lenovo’s under-display camera truly invisible?
It’s usually invisible in the sense that there’s no visible camera module at the top bezel. However, the camera-active zone may still be detectable under certain conditions (like the camera preview or specific brightness levels).
Does an under-display camera record in the dark as well as a standard webcam?
Typically, no. Many under-display implementations need more light to maintain sharpness and avoid heavy exposure noise. A lamp in front of you often makes a bigger difference than changing camera settings.
Can apps like Microsoft Teams access the Yoga Slim 9i camera?
Yes, as long as Windows camera permissions are enabled for that app and no other app/browser tab is holding the camera resource. If Teams won’t connect, check Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and then reselect the camera inside Teams.
What’s the best way to reduce moire or artifacts?
Use a plain background, improve front-facing lighting, and avoid highly patterned textiles behind you. If artifacts are app-specific, update the app and test with the Windows Camera app to confirm the baseline image quality.
Will a driver update fix under-display camera issues?
Often, yes—camera drivers and firmware updates can improve exposure, processing, and focus behavior. If you consistently see problems across apps, start with camera driver updates and Windows Update, then check Lenovo’s support page for model-specific camera firmware.
Bottom Line
Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 9i invisible under-display camera is primarily a design win: fewer bezel distractions and a cleaner look. For everyday video calls in decent lighting, it can be totally workable.
If you rely on consistent, high-quality video in low-light environments or for professional production, be prepared to adjust your setup—or consider an external webcam. Either way, verify your permissions and test in multiple apps so you know what “good” looks like for your exact unit.
