A Lenovo laptop screen that stays black may point to a power problem, a display-mode or sleep issue, or a fault in the display or system. First check for signs the laptop is running, then see whether an image appears at startup or on an external monitor. Because shortcuts and reset features vary by model, use the instructions for your exact Lenovo device.
First, check whether the laptop is powering on
Look for indicator lights and listen for startup sounds. Lenovo notes that lights or sounds without a picture can indicate a display-related problem; no signs of power call for power troubleshooting instead. Lenovo’s no-power guidance includes connecting the charger directly to a wall outlet. Some models also support a power drain or emergency-reset hole, but neither feature is universal. Check your model’s instructions before trying a reset, and do not open the laptop just to investigate.

If it seems to be running, check sleep and display routing
If you hear the laptop running or see lights, try waking it according to the user guide. A blank screen after sleep or hibernation can involve power or wake-device settings, Windows updates, third-party applications, or an external-monitor cable; these are possibilities to check, not a diagnosis. Lenovo’s ThinkPad guidance for black screens after suspend or hibernation discusses these areas.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remove external displays and docks, then try starting the laptop with only its built-in screen. Lenovo’s ideapad instructions also suggest toggling the display mode. The shortcut varies across Lenovo product families and models, so consult your model’s guide rather than relying on a universal key combination. Lenovo’s ideapad video-display troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Check whether an image appears before Windows loads
Restart the laptop and watch for the Lenovo logo or a BIOS screen. Lenovo’s general display guidance recommends checking whether either appears. If you can see BIOS but the screen goes black as Windows loads, a software issue is possible; that observation does not identify a specific cause.
Lenovo’s guide also describes resetting BIOS to defaults, but warns that this erases data. Do not reset BIOS casually. Follow model-specific instructions, and make sure important data is backed up before considering that step.

Compare the built-in screen with an external monitor
If you have access to a known-good monitor and compatible cable, connect them and check that the connections are secure. A picture on the external monitor while the built-in screen stays blank gives support staff a useful comparison, but does not prove that the laptop’s LCD panel is the failed part. Lenovo recommends using an external display as one of its troubleshooting checks in its ideapad guide.

- This laptop model is sold in the market with different screen versions (Touch vs Non touch, different resolutions & connector pins, etc..) To avoid returns and wasted time, please double-check your current screen’s specs. You must replace like-for-like — the wrong screen will not work.
- Video Connector Pins: 30 (must match your current screen or won't work)
- Resolution: 1920x1080
- Screen Size And Finish: 15.6" Matte
- Free Tools & Double Sided Tape
- Turn off the computer.
- Connect it to AC power.
- Press Fn, left Ctrl, and the power button together.
The test lasts about 20 seconds and displays five solid colors in sequence. Lenovo says that seeing the colors indicates the LCD is functioning. If your model’s manual does not document this test, do not assume the key sequence applies to your laptop.

If the screen remains blank after these checks, contact Lenovo support or a qualified repair provider. Share whether the laptop shows power signs, whether you see a logo or BIOS, whether an external monitor displays an image, and whether your model supports the LCD self-test. The right next step depends on the model, warranty, and those observations.
