If your Lenovo laptop mouse is not working, first identify which device has stopped responding: the built-in touchpad, a separate USB or Bluetooth mouse, or both. Their fixes differ. Use the keyboard, a working external mouse, or the TrackPoint if your model has one to navigate Windows settings.
First, identify which pointing device has failed
Does the built-in touchpad fail while a separate mouse or TrackPoint still moves the pointer? Start with the touchpad settings and driver checks. If an external mouse also fails, follow the connection-specific USB or Bluetooth steps below. If both the touchpad and external mouse are affected, check the Windows settings and drivers, then test each device separately.

Fix a built-in touchpad that does not respond
Turn on the touchpad in Windows
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and turn on Touchpad. In Windows 10, search Windows for Touchpad settings and check that the touchpad is enabled. If you cannot use the touchpad, press Windows key + I to open Settings, search for “touchpad,” and use the arrow keys and Enter to navigate. Lenovo’s guidance covers touchpad settings for Windows: Lenovo touchpad or trackpad troubleshooting.
Check the keyboard toggle for your exact model
Some Lenovo laptops have a keyboard function key that enables or disables the touchpad. The key varies by model; examples include F6, F8, or a function key used with Fn. Do not assume one shortcut applies to every Lenovo laptop. Find your model’s user guide through Lenovo Support and check its keyboard or touchpad instructions. Lenovo’s IdeaPad touchpad guidance describes model-specific examples.

Check whether an external mouse disables it
If the touchpad stops only when you connect a mouse, look in Touchpad settings for an option such as Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected. Some models or touchpad drivers instead provide a setting to disable the touchpad when a USB mouse is plugged in. The wording and availability depend on the laptop and driver.
Look for the touchpad in Device Manager
If Touchpad settings are missing or unavailable, check whether Windows detects the device. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and inspect Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices. If the touchpad entry is absent, select View > Show hidden devices. A grayed-out entry may offer an update option. Lenovo’s IdeaPad troubleshooting steps describe these checks.

Get the touchpad or mouse driver from the support page for your exact Lenovo product and operating system, or use Lenovo System Update. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different model. Restart Windows after installing or updating a driver. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, Device Manager may offer Roll Back Driver in the device’s Properties; that option is only available when Windows has a previous driver to restore.

- Disconnect and reconnect the mouse. For a wireless mouse with a USB receiver, unplug the receiver, wait about ten seconds, and reconnect it.
- Try another USB port. If the mouse is connected through a hub, check that the hub is powered and connect the mouse directly to the laptop.
- Check the cable, battery, and sensor. Replace or charge the battery if needed, and clear any debris blocking the sensor.
- If the mouse or receiver has a reset control, follow its instructions to reset it.

Fix a Bluetooth mouse that will not connect
- Make sure Bluetooth is on, the mouse is powered and charged, and it is in pairing mode within range of the laptop.
- If Windows lists the mouse but it will not connect, remove it from Bluetooth settings, then add it again using the Windows pairing flow.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, restart the laptop, and check Windows Update.
If Bluetooth is missing or its controls are grayed out, Windows may be reporting a Bluetooth hardware problem. Check the Bluetooth driver on your exact Lenovo model’s support page and follow the laptop manufacturer’s firmware guidance. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide covers pairing and connection checks.

After checking settings and drivers, Safe Mode can help isolate a software or driver conflict. If the touchpad works there but not in normal Windows, a particular application or driver may be involved. Lenovo also describes using a Windows restore point if the problem began after a change and, in some IdeaPad cases, loading BIOS defaults. These are later steps: follow the instructions for your exact model, since BIOS access keys and settings vary. Lenovo’s IdeaPad troubleshooting guidance covers these options.
