LEGO vs. Other Building Sets: Which Is Right for Your Child?

The right building set depends on your child’s age, abilities, interests, and preferred play—not a blanket brand ranking.

There is no single best building set for every child. Choose by matching the set’s age grade and piece size to your child’s abilities, then consider whether they enjoy exploring loose blocks, connecting pieces, or following instructions to make a model. The right fit is the one they can handle safely and want to play with.

What should you compare?

Start with the child, not the brand. A useful comparison is how easy the pieces are to hold and connect, what kinds of builds the set invites, and whether the child wants to invent freely or copy a pictured model. Check the product’s age grade and warnings for the specific item and market; age bands below describe general play characteristics, not a prescription for every child.

  • Piece size and handling: Consider whether pieces are small, lightweight, or difficult for the child to grasp.
  • Connection effort: Interlocking sets require children to join and separate pieces. Observe whether that feels manageable or frustrating.
  • Play style: Loose blocks and many magnetic tile systems can suit broad spatial experimentation; interlocking bricks and themed kits can invite instruction-led builds and detailed models. This is a practical distinction, not evidence that one type produces better learning outcomes.
  • Interest and logistics: Think about what the child likes to make, storage, ordinary-play durability, and compatibility with pieces they already own. Comparative evidence does not establish one brand as more durable or valuable, or universally compatible with other systems.

How do building materials fit different ages?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s January 2020 age-determination guidance describes broad patterns in children’s play and the product characteristics that may fit them. Use it as context alongside each toy’s own age grade and safety information.

12–18 months: explore, stack, and knock down

For early exploratory play, the CPSC guidance describes lightweight wooden or plastic blocks. Children in this age group may stack or line up blocks, and knocking a stack down can be as important to their play as building it. With internal magnetic blocks, the guide describes clicking and unclicking as exploration rather than building predetermined structures. It cautions against large, heavy wooden unit blocks for this age group because of their weight, size, and hard corners.

19 months to age 2: lightweight blocks and emerging pretend play

The guidance describes emerging representational play and suggests lightweight blocks, often around 2–4 inches, with sets of 20–40 blocks as appropriate examples. These are general age-determination observations, not a rule that every toddler needs blocks of those dimensions or a particular set size.

Ages 3–5: simple connections, then more interlocking systems

As fine-motor skills develop, simple connecting systems become suitable. The CPSC guide describes purposeful manipulation of many simple systems at age 3, and says children ages 4–5 can work with most types of interlocking building systems. Picture-based instructions can help preschoolers, whose reading skills are still developing.

Read the individual set’s age grade and warnings rather than treating these broad ranges as guarantees of readiness.

When is LEGO a better fit than another building set?

LEGO is one option among several, not a universal winner. An interlocking brick set may suit a child who enjoys connecting pieces, making models, or following instructions. Another format—such as large bricks, loose blocks, or magnetic tiles—may better match a child who prefers larger pieces or open-ended experimentation. Which is right depends on the specific product and child; the available evidence does not establish that LEGO is inherently safer, more durable, more educational, or more creative than all alternatives.

What safety checks matter before you buy?

Check the individual product’s age grade, parts, and warnings

Age grades and warnings vary by product and market. Check them before purchase, especially if the child is young or plays around younger siblings. The CPSC says U.S. products intended for children under 3 must not contain prohibited small parts or release them during use-and-abuse testing; labeling rules apply to certain products containing small parts.

Understand the U.S. toy-safety requirements

In the United States, the CPSC says toys intended primarily for children 12 and under must be third-party tested and certified in a Children’s Product Certificate for applicable requirements, including 16 C.F.R. part 1250. The agency identifies ASTM F963-23 as effective April 20, 2024. These are U.S. requirements; do not assume regulations are identical elsewhere. See the CPSC Toy Safety FAQ for details.

Read manufacturers’ safety claims as manufacturer statements

The LEGO Group says it tests new elements and products through chemical, physical, electrical, hygiene, and flammability assessments. Its product-safety page also describes a DUPLO bite test simulating a child biting elements with a force equivalent to 49 pounds (22.5 kg), an impact test using a 1-kilogram metal disc dropped 4.7 inches (12 cm), compression testing at 33 pounds (15 kg), and drop tests from 1.5 meters and 1 meter. These are test conditions published by LEGO, not independent tests or a comparison with other brands; the page does not state a publication date. See LEGO’s product-safety information.
