Display LEGO PlayStation set 72306 on a stable shelf or desk, away from direct sunlight, radiators and heat-producing lamps. The console is 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide and 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep, so measure the interior of any case against those dimensions before buying. A clear enclosure can limit dust and casual handling, but it does not make prolonged bright light safe. UV-filtering glazing is only one layer of protection; duration and visible-light intensity still matter.
What you are planning space for
Set 72306 is a 1,911-piece, adult-oriented model of the original PlayStation console and controller. The console has functional-looking Open and Power buttons. It also includes Gran Turismo and Ape Escape dioramas that may be displayed separately rather than on the console footprint.

LEGO lists the console itself as over 2.5 inches (6 cm) high, 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide and 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep. Those measurements are for the console model, not every possible arrangement of the controller and dioramas. Treat them as the minimum planning envelope and add clearance for the configuration you actually want.

| Item | Published measurement or specification | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces | 1,911 | Allow a stable, uncluttered display surface for a substantial model. |
| Console height | Over 2.5 in (6 cm) | Leave vertical room for the case lid, shelf above and any raised details. |
| Console width | 10.5 in (26 cm) | Case interior must exceed this width before adding side clearance. |
| Console depth | 7.5 in (19 cm) | Case interior must exceed this depth; this is the dimension most likely to be overlooked. |
| Controller and dioramas | Separate display elements included; no combined footprint published | Measure the arrangement you choose instead of assuming the console dimensions cover it. |
The LEGO Group’s 2026 specifications do not establish how quickly this set discolors under a particular household lamp or window. There is therefore no defensible “years until yellowing” estimate for 72306.

Choose the location before choosing a case
Keep direct sun off the model
Do not use a windowsill or a shelf that receives sun at any point in the day. Sunlight is intense and contains substantial ultraviolet radiation, while the changing angle of the sun makes exposure difficult to control. A model that looks shaded in the morning may be illuminated in the afternoon or during a different season.
Move the display deeper into the room, use a wall that does not face a bright window, or reposition it after observing the room through a full day. If you cannot guarantee that direct rays will stay off the model, choose a different location rather than relying on a transparent cover.
Prefer a stable shelf or desk
Use a level surface that does not wobble when the controller or dioramas are touched. Keep the console away from the front edge, vents that blow warm air and places where books, cables or other objects can strike it. The Open and Power buttons are display features, so leave enough room to reach them without dragging the model across the surface.

Radiators, heating vents and enclosed spaces that become hot can raise the temperature around the bricks and any clear case. Conservation guidance from the Library of Congress and the University of Illinois warns that lighting placed inside a display case can create heat. Put heat-producing lamps outside the enclosure and leave space for air to circulate around it.
Do I need a display case?
An enclosure is useful when dust, pets, children or frequent handling are the main problems. It creates a physical barrier and can reduce the amount of loose dust settling on the model. Open shelving is simpler and gives immediate access to the buttons, lid and movable display elements, but it requires more frequent gentle dusting and offers no barrier against accidental contact.

| Consideration | Open shelf or desk | Clear enclosure |
|---|---|---|
| Dust and handling | Dust reaches the bricks; accidental touches are easier. | Acts as a barrier against ordinary dust and casual handling. |
| Light exposure | Easy to keep away from a window by choosing the right location. | Still requires a sun-free location; a cover does not make sunlight harmless. |
| Fit | Only the furniture surface needs to accommodate the chosen arrangement. | Interior dimensions must exceed the console footprint plus controller, dioramas and operating clearance. |
| Heat and airflow | Room air circulates naturally. | Heat can build up, especially with lights inside; keep lamps outside and allow airflow. |
| Access | Buttons and movable details are immediately reachable. | Door or lid design may require moving the model before operating features. |
A case is not mandatory for preservation. It is a trade-off: less dust and handling in exchange for more careful measurement, access planning and heat management.
Why LEGO Play and Display Case 5006157 does not fit the console
LEGO lists Play and Display Case 5006157 as 15.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep and over 7.5 inches high. It has a transparent cover and six baseplates and is described as a way to display LEGO models while helping keep them free from dust.

The console in set 72306 is 7.5 inches deep. Comparing the published measurements leaves the official case 2 inches (about 5.1 cm) short in depth before allowing any clearance for a wall, door, controller or diorama. Do not buy 5006157 as a console enclosure based on its width or height; its listed depth is insufficient.
This dimensional comparison is arithmetic from LEGO’s published figures, not a claim that the case is defective. It may suit other models, but it is not a compatible container for the assembled PlayStation console at those stated dimensions.
How to size a custom or third-party enclosure
Measure the complete arrangement
First decide whether the controller sits beside the console, in front of it or outside the case. Decide whether the Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes share the enclosure or have their own shelves. Measure the finished arrangement at its widest, deepest and tallest points, including any overhanging or opened feature.

Compare interior, not exterior, dimensions
Ask for usable internal width, depth and height. Exterior dimensions include acrylic, glass, frames, hinges and rails that reduce the available space. The internal depth must exceed 7.5 inches for the console alone; add side-to-side and front-to-back clearance so the model does not touch the panels.

Confirm that the door, lid or removable panel opens far enough to place the console inside without catching details. Check whether you can reach the Open and Power buttons through the opening and whether the model must be removed to rearrange the controller or dioramas. A case that fits on paper can be impractical if its access panel is too small.
Plan ventilation and lighting
Do not install a hot lamp inside a closed enclosure. If the case has ventilation slots, keep them unobstructed and leave a gap around the case so warm air can escape. A clear panel advertised as UV-filtering can reduce ultraviolet transmission, but it does not eliminate visible-light exposure or heat.
No exact-fit third-party case has been verified for this set. Treat listings that use only the product name as leads, not proof of compatibility, and request internal measurements before ordering.
Light protection: UV is only part of the problem
Ultraviolet radiation can contribute to fading and color change, but visible light also causes cumulative damage. The Library of Congress explains that “In most cases, conservation treatment cannot reverse light damage.” That is why the safest strategy is to reduce both intensity and duration rather than attempting to make a bright location safe with a filter alone.

- Warm Tips: When receiving the parcel, please confirm if there are any missing parts and test whether every lamp pellet can light up. Avoid damaging the light wires, please do not over pull, bend or shake it during installation
- Keep the model out of direct sun even when a case or glazing is described as UV-filtering.
- Choose moderate room lighting instead of leaving bright display lamps on for long periods.
- Turn display lights off when the room is unoccupied.
- Keep lamps outside the case and away from its top or sides if they produce noticeable heat.
- Avoid placing the enclosure directly below a hot spotlight or against a heating appliance.
These are prudent collection practices derived from general museum guidance, not a laboratory test of LEGO ABS plastic, colorants or set 72306. They reduce exposure but cannot guarantee a particular color lifespan.
Dusting without damaging the build
General collections guidance recommends regular, gentle dusting of stable objects. It does not test a particular brush, vacuum, cleaner or coating on LEGO bricks or this assembled model, so no tool should be presented as LEGO-approved for preservation.
For an open display
- Switch off nearby fans or air-conditioning that could blow loose dust while you work.
- Support the model’s base with one hand if a detail could be knocked loose.
- Use a gentle, clean method intended for delicate objects, working from upper surfaces downward without pressing into small elements.
- Inspect seams, the controller and the separate dioramas rather than forcing dust out of gaps.
- Stop if a piece shifts; stabilize the build before continuing.
For an enclosed display
Clean the outside of the panels according to the case maker’s instructions, keeping liquid away from the LEGO model. Dust the interior only when necessary and with the model protected from drips, static-charged debris or loose hardware. Never spray cleaner into the enclosure.
Regular light cleaning is safer than waiting until a thick layer requires vigorous brushing. The objective is to remove loose dust while avoiding pressure on movable details, not to polish the bricks with chemicals.

Console-centered layout
Place the console horizontally with the controller alongside it and keep the dioramas on a nearby shelf. This requires the least enclosure depth because the case only needs to contain the console and controller. It also leaves the Open and Power buttons visible from the front.

Complete scene layout
Keep the console, controller, Gran Turismo scene and Ape Escape scene together on one surface. Measure the full footprint after arranging them; the published 10.5-by-7.5-inch console dimensions are not a complete measurement for this composition. Use a wider, deeper case or an open shelf if the scenes make the enclosure crowded.
Separate-story layout
Display each diorama on its own small platform near the console. This can improve visibility and make dusting easier, but each platform still needs protection from direct light. If only the console is enclosed, the uncovered scenes need the same sun-avoidance precautions.
Step-by-step setup checklist
- Observe the room. Identify every period when direct sun reaches potential shelves, including seasonal changes.
- Select a stable surface. Confirm that it supports the console and chosen accessories without crowding the edge.
- Choose the arrangement. Decide where the controller and both dioramas will live before measuring anything.
- Record the footprint. Measure width, depth and height of the finished arrangement, then add handling clearance.
- Evaluate enclosure need. Choose open display if access and airflow matter most; choose a clear case if dust and handling are the bigger risks.
- Verify internal case dimensions. Compare the usable interior—not the advertised exterior—to the measurements you recorded. Reject any case with less than 7.5 inches of internal depth for the console.
- Check access and airflow. Make sure the door opens around the model and that no lamp or vent is trapped inside.
- Install without forcing details. Place the console on the base, then add the controller and dioramas only if they remain clear of panels and hinges.
- Set a light routine. Keep the display away from sun and switch bright room or display lighting off when it is not needed.
- Inspect periodically. Look for dust, shifted pieces, condensation or heat buildup and correct the cause before continuing to use the display.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying by exterior size
A case advertised as 8 inches deep may have less usable space after panel thickness and the door mechanism are counted. Request interior measurements and compare them with the 7.5-inch console depth plus clearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming a UV label makes a window display safe
UV filtering addresses one part of light exposure. Move the model out of direct sun and reduce prolonged bright visible light even when the glazing carries a UV-filter claim.
Putting an LED strip inside a closed case
LED does not automatically mean heat-free. If the light warms the enclosure, relocate it outside and improve airflow. Do not trade dust protection for a hotter micro-environment.
Forcing the controller or dioramas into the console case
The console’s published dimensions do not include a combined arrangement. If accessories touch a panel or block the door, display them separately or choose a larger enclosure.
Cleaning with household spray
Spray can reach seams, leave residue or loosen pieces. Keep liquids off the model and use only a gentle, controlled dusting approach; no LEGO-specific cleaning tool is established by the cited guidance.
Expecting a precise discoloration deadline
No published LEGO-specific study establishes how fast set 72306 changes color under particular household lighting. Treat light reduction as risk management, not a countdown to a guaranteed failure point.
Quick Recap
Practical decision guide
- Choose an open shelf when the room is already free of direct sun, dust is manageable and you want immediate access to the model’s features.
- Choose a clear enclosure when dust, pets, children or frequent handling are persistent concerns and you can verify the full internal fit.
- Display the dioramas separately when adding them would make the case crowded or block access to the console.
- Use a larger custom case when you want every element together and the measured arrangement exceeds the console-only footprint.
- Reconsider the location whenever the only available spot receives direct sunlight or traps heat, regardless of the case material.
