For the same approximate brightness, an LED typically uses far fewer watts and lasts much longer than an incandescent bulb. To replace one, match the old bulb’s brightness by lumens—not watts—then choose the color appearance you want and check that the new bulb fits your fixture and works with its dimmer.
LED vs. incandescent bulbs at a glance
| What to compare | Incandescent | LED |
|---|---|---|
| Power for about 800 lumens | 60 watts | 5.9–10.5 watts for A-type, E26-base general-purpose replacement LEDs in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) guidance updated June 2023; actual models vary. DOE purchasing guidance |
| Typical life | About 1,000 operating hours | 30,000–50,000 hours or longer for good-quality white LED products; useful life commonly means the time until light output reaches 70% of its initial level. DOE LED Basics |
| Typical color appearance | Warm light, around 2,700 K | Available in a range of color appearances, including warm white near 2,700 K. Check the bulb’s listed CCT. |
| Light direction | Emits light in all directions | LEDs are directional; fixture optics affect how light spreads in a room. |
The wattage range and lumen comparison above apply to the general-purpose replacement category in DOE’s guidance, not every LED bulb. The label or manufacturer’s specification is the best source for a particular model’s brightness, power, life, and compatibility.

How much energy does an LED use compared with an incandescent?
Watts measure electrical power use; lumens measure visible-light output. DOE lists about 800 lumens as the familiar output of a 60-watt incandescent, compared with 5.9–10.5 watts for the A-type, E26-base general-purpose LED replacements covered by its June 2023 purchasing guidance. That is why “60-watt equivalent” on an LED package refers to approximate brightness, not power consumption. DOE’s bulb guidance recommends comparing lumens when choosing between light sources.
DOE’s same table gives these examples for A-type general-purpose replacements with E26 bases:

| Approximate brightness | Incandescent power | LED power range in DOE guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 450 lumens | 40 watts | 4.5–7 watts |
| 800 lumens | 60 watts | 5.9–10.5 watts |
| 1,100 lumens | 75 watts | 9.5–14 watts |
| 1,600 lumens | 100 watts | 10.5–18 watts |
These are DOE’s product ranges, not guaranteed values for every bulb or a promise that two products with the same lumen rating will look identical in every fixture. LEDs are directional, while incandescent lamps emit in all directions. Fixture optics and LED driver efficiency also influence the light delivered where it is needed, so a bulb’s wattage alone cannot predict room-level results.
How long do LED and incandescent bulbs last?
DOE describes a typical incandescent lamp as lasting about 1,000 operating hours. Good-quality white LED lighting products typically reach 30,000–50,000 hours or more, according to DOE’s LED Basics. Treat these as typical lifetimes, not a warranty or guarantee for an individual product.

There is an important difference in how LED “life” is described. DOE says useful life is typically measured until a lamp or luminaire emits 70% of its initial light output. An LED can therefore still be operating after it has become noticeably dimmer. Its electronics may fail earlier, and its color may shift over time.
Will an LED look as warm as an incandescent?
It can. Incandescent lamps typically produce warm light around 2,700 kelvin (K), but LED technology can produce many color appearances; “LED” does not mean cool or bluish light. Look for the correlated color temperature (CCT) on the package or product specification. Lower values generally look warmer; higher values look cooler. DOE advises matching the existing CCT when changing light sources: a shift from 2,700 K to 4,100 K, for example, is noticeable and may not suit the room. DOE purchasing guidance

- LONG LASTING PERFORMANCE: These LED bulbs offer a 10,000 hour lifespan, providing lasting illumination for over 9 years (based on 3 hours of use each day), helping minimize replacements
- GREAT ATMOSPHERE: Enjoy daylight white light bulbs that create a bright, crisp atmosphere for any room
- STANDARD FIT: The E26 standard base provides compatibility with most fixtures, making it easy to install these LED bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting
CCT is not the same as color rendering
CCT describes whether light appears warm or cool. Color rendering describes how colors look under that light compared with a reference. The color rendering index (CRI) is a familiar measure, but it does not fully represent how faithfully every color—especially saturated reds—is rendered. DOE’s 2023 purchasing guidance says ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs have a CRI of 80 or greater; that figure is the specification stated in that guidance, not a universal legal threshold for every bulb. DOE points to TM-30 measures as a more comprehensive way to evaluate color fidelity. LED Basics and Color and Spectrum
Some lighting goals involve a trade-off between color fidelity and efficiency. If accurate color matters for a particular room or task, compare the bulb’s color specifications rather than relying on “warm white” or CRI alone.

What to check before replacing a bulb
- Choose brightness by lumens. For a familiar 60-watt incandescent replacement, look for about 800 lumens. DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver guide uses this example; the replacement LED’s wattage will be much lower and varies by model.
- Pick the light color. Check CCT in kelvin and choose a value close to the bulb you are replacing if you want a similar warm or cool appearance.
- Check the base and bulb shape. Confirm the base fits the socket and the bulb’s dimensions clear the fixture. Some LEDs are wider near the base than incandescent bulbs.
- Check enclosure suitability. Heat in an enclosed fixture can affect LED performance and life. Use a bulb marked as suitable for that fixture if the fixture is enclosed.
- Check dimmer compatibility. If you need dimming, confirm both that the LED is dimmable and that it is compatible with the installed dimmer. A mismatch can cause poor dimming performance.
For exact product details, use the lamp label and manufacturer specification for the model and intended fixture. DOE’s purchasing guidance covers general-purpose A-type LED replacements with E26 bases; other shapes, bases, and specialty uses require checking their own specifications.

An incandescent bulb produces light by heating a filament. An LED is a semiconductor source and is not inherently white: white LED light is commonly made using phosphor conversion, color mixing, or a combination of approaches. LEDs emit light directionally, which can reduce wasted light in some fixture applications, while incandescent bulbs emit in all directions. The fixture’s optics and the LED’s driver also affect how the light is delivered, so the source alone does not determine the result in a room. DOE LED Basics
