What matters most is how much light a fixture emits, its spectrum, where it aims that light, how much escapes upward or into nearby homes and habitats, and how long it stays on. A well-shielded, appropriately dimmed warm or amber LED can be a good dark-sky choice; a bright, blue-rich LED can worsen skyglow. Sodium lamps are warm-appearing alternatives, but poor shielding or excessive output can make them polluting too.
Why the lamp label does not settle the comparison
“LED” describes a light-source technology, not one fixed color or spectrum. LEDs can be designed with different spectral outputs, so the fact that a streetlight is LED does not tell you by itself how much short-wavelength, blue-rich light it emits. Likewise, “older lighting” covers different technologies and installations rather than one uniform alternative.

DarkSky International recommends a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2200 K, phosphor-converted amber LEDs, or some filtered LEDs whenever possible to reduce environmental impacts. CCT is useful as a quick description of a lamp’s apparent color, but it is not a complete description of its spectrum. For a meaningful comparison, look for spectral power distribution information as well as the fixture’s photometric performance.
DarkSky says outdoor lighting with high blue-light content is more likely to contribute to light pollution because it can have greater geographic and atmospheric reach than lighting with less blue light. That makes short-wavelength output an important consideration, but it does not override the effects of brightness, shielding, aiming, spill, and operating hours. How LEDs and sodium streetlights compare
Low-pressure sodium (LPS), high-pressure sodium (HPS), and low-CCT LEDs are all among the warm-appearing outdoor lighting options identified by DarkSky. Warm appearance alone, however, does not determine the effect on the night sky: a fixture can still send unnecessary light above the horizon or beyond the street it is meant to illuminate.
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Spectrum and blue-rich output | Shorter-wavelength light can have greater atmospheric and geographic reach, according to DarkSky. | Check spectral power distribution where available; use CCT as a partial indicator, not a complete spectrum measurement. DarkSky favors 2200 K CCT, phosphor-converted amber LEDs, or some filtered LEDs when possible. |
| Shielding and aiming | Light directed upward or at high angles contributes to skyglow; poorly aimed light can reach places that do not need it. | Choose a fixture designed to direct light downward and target the intended roadway. |
| Output and glare | Nominal wattage does not show how much useful light reaches the road or how much produces glare. | Compare delivered illuminance and photometric data, and use no more output than the task requires. |
| Spill beyond the road | Unwanted light can trespass into homes or affect nearby habitat. | Assess the installation at its edges, not just the pavement it is intended to illuminate. |
| Operating schedule | Light emitted when it is not needed still adds to nighttime exposure. | Consider dimming, curfews, or shorter operating hours where local needs and rules allow. |
| Street and local requirements | The right installation depends on the road’s purpose and local conditions. | Check applicable roadway standards, local plans, and photometric needs before choosing a product. |
So a warm-spectrum LED can outperform a poorly controlled sodium installation for dark-sky goals, while a carefully shielded older lamp can be preferable to an overbright, blue-rich LED. There is no universal result based on lamp type alone.

What a dark-sky-conscious streetlight design looks like
- Use only the light needed. Set output to meet the actual task rather than defaulting to the brightest available option.
- Limit short-wavelength light. Prefer a lower-CCT or amber option where appropriate, while checking spectrum rather than relying on color temperature alone.
- Shield and aim carefully. Keep light on the road or area that needs it, minimizing upward output, glare, and spill.
- Adapt light to time and place. Dimming or shorter schedules may be appropriate when activity and safety needs change, subject to local requirements.
DarkSky and the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting include limiting shorter-wavelength blue-violet light to the least amount needed. DarkSky’s Approved Luminaires guidelines, Version 3.1, were updated in October 2025 and address environmental protection and nuisance avoidance. A program listing can help identify fixtures assessed against that guidance, but a listing does not by itself establish that a particular model suits every road, mounting arrangement, or local standard. Check current program guidance and product listings before procurement. (Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting; DarkSky Approved Luminaires guidelines)

Why useful street lighting still requires local judgment
Dark-sky practice does not mean removing all nighttime lighting. The CIE’s 2025 position statement recognizes potential benefits of lighting, including road-safety and reassurance benefits, alongside concerns about skyglow, health, and ecosystems. It points to good design, local knowledge and planning, and adaptability to changing demands as ways to mitigate obtrusive light. These principles support designing for a street’s actual needs; they do not establish that any particular light level guarantees safety.

For a public-road replacement, the choice must fit the road class, local conditions, applicable standards, mounting, and photometric requirements. A qualified lighting designer or municipal procurement documentation can help assess those needs alongside dark-sky goals. The CIE also notes that further research is needed on species and ecosystems, and on measurement methods for obtrusive light and skyglow. There is no universal measured sky-brightness change established for replacing sodium streetlights with LEDs. The outcome in a given place depends on spectrum, total light output, shielding, installation, other nearby sources, and measurement conditions. To judge a proposed or completed conversion, compare those factors rather than treating the new lamp technology as the result.
