LED face masks can cause temporary redness, irritation, rash, or discomfort in some users. Stop using the mask if symptoms worsen, become painful or persistent, or include blistering, new pigmentation, or unusual light sensitivity. Follow the instructions for your exact device, including its eye-protection requirements. The available sources do not establish how often consumer masks cause side effects or quantify long-term risk.

What side effects can an LED face mask cause?

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes the most common short-term effects of red-light therapy as mild, including temporary mild pain or irritated skin. Cleveland Clinic also lists rash or redness as possible effects. These reactions can happen, but they are not inevitable, and neither source gives a reliable incidence rate specific to consumer face masks.

Do not assume a severe or worsening reaction is a normal adjustment period. In a 2026 FDA MAUDE report about a HigherDOSE red and infrared mask, a user reported a painful, itchy, burning rash after two uses. The manufacturer said its investigation was preliminary and ongoing, with photosensitivity or silicone allergy among the possibilities. This individual report does not establish what caused the rash or how often such reactions occur.

When should you stop using the mask?

Stop home-device use and seek medical evaluation if your skin condition worsens, new hyperpigmentation appears, pain develops, or you experience unusual sensitivity to light. The AAD’s photobiomodulation guidance identifies these as reasons to stop and get evaluated.

Stop and seek prompt medical advice for a significant or persistent reaction, severe redness, burning, swelling, blistering, or symptoms near your eyes. Do not keep using the mask to see whether your skin will get used to it. For mild irritation, pause use and check the device instructions and warnings before considering whether to restart; a dermatologist can help assess the reaction.

Who should check with a dermatologist first?

An at-home red-light device is not suitable for everyone. The AAD recommends discussing use with a board-certified dermatologist, particularly if you take medication that increases light sensitivity. It also notes that research suggests darker skin tones may be more sensitive to visible light, which can raise the risk of hyperpigmentation. Cleveland Clinic likewise notes that certain medicines and health-history factors may affect suitability.

These are reasons to seek individualized advice, not a complete list of contraindications. Your particular device’s manual governs its warnings, and a clinician can consider your skin, health history, medication, and device together.

How should you use eye protection and follow device instructions?

Follow the instructions for your specific mask for session length, frequency, placement, and protective gear. If the directions require eye protection, use the protection recommended for that model; the AAD advises against substituting ordinary sunglasses for specified goggles. An FDA adverse-event report describes an individual complaint of transient blurred vision and reported flash burns after use of a Light Salon mask. That report does not prove the mask caused the symptoms or show how frequently they occur, but it underscores the importance of following the device’s eye-safety directions.

What FDA clearance does—and does not—tell you

The AAD says FDA-cleared red-light devices are considered low risk for the public, but clearance does not establish efficacy or mean every user will be free of reactions. Describe a device’s regulatory status accurately and model by model: “FDA cleared,” “FDA approved,” and “FDA certified” are not interchangeable claims.

What is known about long-term effects?

The AAD says the long-term effects of red-light devices on skin are not known and that more research is needed. Current sources do not provide a numerical long-term risk estimate for consumer LED face masks. Treat claims that a mask is risk-free or prevents side effects with caution.
