What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. You can download your Google Docs files and move your work to another editor, but leaving is a workflow decision—not a one-click, guaranteed-perfect transfer. Before switching, test a few important files, check how your collaborators will edit them, and choose a replacement that fits your privacy, offline, and file-format needs.
What “escaping” Google Docs actually involves
Google offers Download Your Data to download Docs, Sheets, and Slides for backup or moving to another service. That makes it possible to take copies of your documents with you. It does not establish that every feature will transfer intact, or that exporting documents moves your entire Google account and all associated Drive content.

Think of the change as two separate tasks: getting copies of your files, then deciding where you and your collaborators will edit them. Comments, suggestions, formatting details, and version history may not carry over as you expect; the available documentation does not guarantee complete fidelity. Test representative files before moving your whole library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Google Docs private enough to keep using?
Google says new files are set to Restricted by default, so only the owner and people specifically invited can access them. Google also says user files are encrypted in transit and at rest, and that Workspace does not scan private Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids, or Drive files to train its foundational AI models. These are Google’s stated policies; they do not mean every sharing choice is private.

Check a document’s General access setting before sharing it. Google explains that “Anyone with the link” allows people who have the URL to access the file. It says search engines do not automatically index such a document unless its link is posted on a public, crawlable site. See Google’s sharing and access guidance.
Eligible work or school Google Workspace accounts can also use administrator-enabled client-side encryption. Google says it cannot decrypt files protected this way. It is a specialized configuration, not a consumer toggle: Google documents limitations including one editor at a time, different autosave behavior, and unavailable features such as mobile editing, comments on Drive files, grammar check, voice typing, add-ons, and downloading Docs or Slides. Details are in Google’s client-side encryption documentation.

Which replacement fits your workflow?
| Option | What its documentation supports | Best fit to consider | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Docs | Restricted-by-default sharing, encryption in transit and at rest, and optional client-side encryption for eligible Workspace accounts. | People whose collaborators already work in Google Docs, especially if sharing controls meet their needs. | Client-side encryption requires administrator setup and limits some features, including simultaneous editing. |
| Proton Docs in Proton Drive | Proton says Docs uses end-to-end encryption, supports simultaneous editing and invitations to view or edit, and can upload and edit DOCX files. Proton lists downloads in DOCX, PDF, TXT, Markdown, and HTML. | People prioritizing Proton’s stated end-to-end encryption model while retaining shared editing. | These are Proton’s product claims, not an independent audit or a guarantee of feature parity or perfect conversion. |
| Microsoft Word | Microsoft says coauthoring requires supported apps, edit permissions, modern formats such as DOCX, and shared storage such as OneDrive or SharePoint. | People whose collaborators rely on Office document workflows and DOCX. | Microsoft says it does not support coauthoring documents stored on Google Drive. The specific plan or license needed for features is not established here. |

Choose for privacy
Compare the specific privacy model you need. Google describes encryption in transit and at rest by default, with client-side encryption available to eligible Workspace users through an administrator. Proton describes its Docs as end-to-end encrypted, including document names, content, edits, comments, and suggestions. Those descriptions are not interchangeable: assess the vendor’s stated model alongside the collaboration features your group needs.

Choose for collaboration and DOCX
If people must co-edit Word files, Microsoft’s documented setup depends on modern formats such as DOCX and supported shared storage; Google Drive is not a supported location for Word coauthoring. Proton says its Docs can edit uploaded DOCX files and support simultaneous collaboration. Neither statement proves that every Docs layout or review feature will convert perfectly, so check your own files and workflows.
Choose for offline work
Offline editing requires preparation in Google’s workflow. Google’s offline access instructions call for installing the Google Docs Offline extension, enabling offline access in Drive settings, and marking individual files Available offline. If you are undecided about migrating, set up offline access and try the files you need before disconnecting.

How to move without losing control of your files
- List what matters. Identify your high-value documents and the people who use them. Note whether they need simultaneous editing, comments, suggestions, offline access, or DOCX compatibility.
- Export a representative sample. Use Download Your Data to get copies. Include files with the layouts and review workflows you rely on, rather than judging the move from a simple text document alone.
- Open the sample in your intended replacement. Check layout, comments, suggestions, and any other essential features manually. The documented export options do not guarantee that every detail survives conversion.
- Confirm where collaboration will happen. Verify the replacement’s sharing controls and storage requirements, then invite a small group to test access and editing. For Word coauthoring, Microsoft specifies supported shared storage and does not support documents stored on Google Drive.
- Keep a separate backup. Retain an exported copy in a location you control, such as a local drive, before changing access or deleting originals.
- Migrate in stages. Move a manageable set, confirm that collaborators can open and edit it, and only then decide whether to move the rest. Keep the originals until you have checked what matters in the new workflow.
What to verify before deleting your Google originals
- Important documents open in the new editor with acceptable formatting.
- Collaborators can access the files using the intended permissions.
- Comments, suggestions, or other review steps your team depends on still work—or you have agreed on a replacement workflow.
- Any linked Drive files or non-document content you need have been accounted for; exporting Docs, Sheets, and Slides alone does not establish that everything in Drive has moved.
- You have retained a backup and are comfortable with the new service’s offline and sharing behavior.
