Learn to Code From Zero: Which Free Resource Should You Start With?

Start learning to code for free with a resource suited to your goal: broad computer science, project-based practice, full-stack web development, or front-end foundations.

You can learn to code without paying for a course or buying special equipment. The best first resource depends on whether you want a broad introduction to computer science or a practical path into building websites. Four options with clear, official descriptions are Harvard CS50x, freeCodeCamp, The Odin Project, and MDN’s web development learning area. Choose one that fits your goal and work through its exercises before adding another.

Choose a starting point that matches your goal

Resource Best starting fit Format and structure What is free
Harvard CS50x 2026 Explore computer science and programming fundamentals before choosing a specialty. An eleven-week OpenCourseWare course covering problem solving, computational thinking, algorithms, data structures, and several programming languages. Harvard says the course can be taken free. Feedback through an edX account and verified or professional certificates have separate enrollment details.
freeCodeCamp Learn through coding practice and projects, particularly for web development. A project-based curriculum with subject areas including responsive web design, JavaScript, Python, relational databases, and backend development. freeCodeCamp describes its courses, projects, and certifications as free.
The Odin Project Follow a web-development route toward full-stack development. A self-directed curriculum that organizes external learning materials into a sequence, with projects and community support. The Odin Project describes its full-stack curriculum as free.
MDN Learning Web Development Build front-end foundations and learn to use technical documentation. Structured beginner and core modules, tutorials, and reference material. MDN frames the outcome as moving from beginner to comfortable, not beginner to expert. The cited learning page presents its learning materials; it does not establish a complete job-ready course. The page was last updated in August 2025.

Which resource fits how you want to learn?

Start broad with CS50x if you are undecided

CS50x is a reasonable first step if you want to understand core ideas that apply beyond a single kind of website or app. Harvard explicitly welcomes learners with or without previous programming experience. Its course page says: “This course teaches you how to solve problems, both with and without code, with an emphasis on correctness, design, and style.” The eleven weeks describe the course structure, not a promised completion time for every learner.

Choose freeCodeCamp for project-based practice

If you are drawn to websites and want to learn by working through coding tasks and projects, freeCodeCamp is a direct option. Its homepage lists multiple subject areas, so check the current curriculum and choose a clear starting sequence rather than trying to study everything at once. Claims on the provider’s own site should be read as its description of its program, not as independent evidence of employment outcomes.

Choose The Odin Project for a self-directed full-stack route

The Odin Project is aimed at web development and presents a full-stack curriculum built from curated online materials and project work. That structure can suit someone comfortable navigating learning materials and troubleshooting as they go. Its emphasis is not the same as a single course that supplies every lesson in one format.

Use MDN for front-end lessons and reference

MDN’s learning area offers beginner setup modules alongside structured lessons on front-end skills. It can be useful for learning how the web’s core technologies fit together and for returning to reference material while practicing. MDN describes its target as reaching comfort with the material, rather than expert status, so treat it as a learning and reference area rather than a guarantee of complete career preparation. The page also recommends a Scrimba partner course; that recommendation is distinct from MDN’s own learning materials.

How to begin coding without experience

  1. Pick one immediate goal. Choose either broad computer-science foundations or a specific direction such as front-end or full-stack web development.
  2. Open the matching official curriculum. Start at its beginner entry point: CS50x for a broad introduction, or the web-focused curriculum or beginner modules for a website goal.
  3. Follow the sequence and do the work. Complete lessons, exercises, and projects rather than only watching or reading. For project-based paths, make the projects part of your regular practice.
  4. Use a second resource to answer a specific need. For example, consult MDN for front-end concepts or reference material while following a web-development curriculum; avoid dividing your attention across several complete courses at the outset.
  5. Check access details before pursuing credentials or feedback. Free course material does not necessarily mean every certificate or feedback route is included at no cost.

Can you learn to code for free without buying equipment?

The four official pages support starting with their online learning materials, and none establishes a required physical-product purchase. You do not need to buy a coding book, special keyboard, or single-board computer just to begin with these resources. A device and internet access are practical ways to use online lessons, but the cited pages do not specify a hardware purchasing requirement.

“Free” can also refer to different things. CS50x distinguishes its free OpenCourseWare course from feedback and certificate options with additional enrollment details. freeCodeCamp describes its courses, projects, and certifications as free; The Odin Project describes its full-stack curriculum as free. MDN’s page provides learning materials and reference, rather than defining a complete paid-or-free job-training package. Check the official page for current terms before enrolling in any optional credential route.

What these resources do—and do not—promise

These are starting points, not evidence of a guaranteed job, income, or fixed time to become employable. Their official pages describe curriculum, projects, and learning goals; they do not provide a verified comparison proving one is best for every beginner. A useful choice is the one whose subject and structure you can follow consistently while completing the work.
