Benjamin Franklin made some colonial paper money harder to counterfeit by combining fine-detail leaf printing with paper and typographic features. The methods raised the effort required to copy a note, but they were not foolproof: counterfeiters eventually reproduced leaf designs by transfer and tracing. No single feature proves that a surviving bill is genuine.
What Franklin’s anti-counterfeiting approach involved
Franklin printed colonial bills of credit for Pennsylvania and also worked for New Jersey and Delaware. His printing business, later continued by David Hall and William Sellers, used several features that could complicate copying. Their use varied by note, colony, denomination, and date; a bill should not be assumed to contain every feature.

- Printed image: detailed impressions made from real leaves.
- Paper: mica incorporated into the paper, according to the Library of Congress.
- Text and typesetting: variations in spelling, typefaces, symbols, and punctuation.
These features addressed different parts of the problem. A detailed image was difficult to reproduce closely, while unusual paper and deliberate differences in text gave people additional details to examine. The sources do not establish that one feature was more effective than another.

Known as nature printing, the technique used a real leaf to create a printing surface with fine veins and texture. The Library of Congress describes the process as a double casting: Franklin’s team made a plaster mold from a leaf, then poured type metal into the mold’s impression. The resulting metal piece could be mounted at type height and used to print the leaf image.

This account is a reconstruction, not a complete technical description left by Franklin. The method was kept secret; later understanding drew on a surviving printing block and scholarship discussed by James Green in a 2013 Library Company of Philadelphia annual report.
Where the leaf images appeared
On some notes, the nature print appeared on the reverse. Colonial Williamsburg says Pennsylvania notes were double-sided by 1739, with a different naturalistic leaf image on the reverse of each denomination. Its collection description says nature prints appeared on notes for a number of colonies and the Continental Congress until around 1780. These dates describe the issues in that account, not every bill Franklin or his successors printed.

A surviving example catalogued by Colonial Williamsburg is an eight-dollar Continental Currency note dated May 10, 1775, printed by Hall & Sellers in Philadelphia. It illustrates that the practice continued beyond Franklin’s own direct printing work; it should not be taken to mean Franklin personally printed every later note produced by the firm.

Deliberate differences in the wording
Franklin’s shop varied the spelling of “Pennsylvania” on some high-denomination notes. The Franklin Institute describes this as a feature thought to deter counterfeiting, so it is best treated as an attributed explanation rather than a proven motive for every spelling variation. A misspelling alone is not evidence that a note is authentic: the correct wording depends on the specific issue.

Typesetting and paper
Combinations of typefaces, symbols, and punctuation created additional details a copyist would need to reproduce. The Library of Congress also identifies mica in the paper as an anti-counterfeiting feature. These clues worked alongside the printed design; they were not guarantees, and their presence or absence must be assessed against the particular note being examined.
Why the safeguards did not stop counterfeiting
Counterfeiters eventually found ways to reproduce the appearance of nature-printed leaves through transfer and tracing, without casting an actual leaf. The Library of Congress also describes other forms of fraud, including copying whole designs and adding a zero to change a denomination. Franklin’s measures made copying more demanding, but they did not make it impossible.

How to assess a Franklin-era note
Authentication depends on several features considered together. The Library of Congress identifies the authorized denominations for the issue date, spelling and broken type, the paper’s appearance or makeup, and authorized signers as relevant checks. A practical examination should therefore begin with the exact note and its issue, rather than with a general claim that a leaf image or misspelling is a secret mark.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify the issue. Establish the colony or issuing authority, date, and denomination, then check whether that denomination was authorized for that date.
- Inspect the wording and type. Compare spelling, typefaces, symbols, punctuation, and any broken type with the specific issue.
- Examine the paper. Consider its appearance and makeup, including whether the expected paper characteristics are present. Do not treat a visual impression by itself as conclusive.
- Check the signatures. Compare them with signers authorized for that issue, while remembering that signatures can be convincingly faked.
- Consider condition and the whole note. Wear or damage may make certainty difficult. A specialist reference such as Eric P. Newman’s The Early Paper Money of America, identified by the Library of Congress as a reference used in checking colonial notes, can support issue-specific comparison.
The Library of Congress notes that poor condition can make a firm determination difficult. Even a plausible signature or convincing leaf impression cannot establish authenticity on its own.

Franklin’s legacy in colonial currency printing
The notes reflect a layered approach: detailed images, paper characteristics, and deliberate typographic variation provided multiple obstacles to imitation. Franklin printed Pennsylvania bills and was employed by New Jersey and Delaware; the Library of Congress also identifies notes associated with Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and the Continental Congress in connection with Franklin, Hall, and Sellers. Hall continued the business with Sellers after Franklin left. That wider record is a reason to distinguish Franklin’s work from later issues printed by his successors.
