LDAP lets applications and other clients access directory information, including information stored in Active Directory. Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) adds domain identity, authentication, and management features that LDAP itself does not provide.
LDAP and Active Directory are different layers
LDAP, the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, defines how a client can access and operate on directory entries. Active Directory is Microsoft’s directory-service system, which can make directory information available through LDAP. So they are not competing products or interchangeable terms: LDAP is an access protocol, while Active Directory is a system that includes directory services and supported protocols.
Microsoft puts the distinction plainly: “LDAP cannot create directories or specify how a directory service operates.” Microsoft’s LDAP definition describes the protocol; it does not prescribe every feature or behavior of the directory server on the other end.
What LDAP does
Directory information is organized into entries (often called objects) with attributes and values. Depending on the directory service and permissions, an LDAP client can read or query entries, and may be able to create, delete, or modify them. LDAP carries those operations between the client and service; it does not determine what kinds of entries the server supports or how the server handles identity and policy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
LDAP may be part of an application’s authentication workflow, but that does not make LDAP itself an identity system or guarantee a particular authentication method. The directory server and the client’s configuration determine what is available.
What Active Directory adds
Microsoft’s Active Directory system includes two relevant service modes: Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS). Both are accessible through LDAP, but they serve different purposes. Microsoft’s Active Directory protocol overview describes their scope and capabilities.

AD DS: domain identity and administration
AD DS organizes a forest into domains and organizational units, and stores domain account information. It provides domain-oriented identity and authentication capabilities, with group identities contributing authorization information. It also supports Kerberos authentication for domain-joined clients, administrator-configured policy settings, automatic certificate enrollment, and replication of directory contents among domain controllers. These are capabilities of the Active Directory system, not features guaranteed by LDAP.
AD LDS: directory storage for applications
AD LDS is an LDAP-accessible directory service primarily intended to store information for application software. It provides directory storage without AD DS’s domain naming contexts and domain-oriented role. An application that needs directory access may use LDAP with AD LDS or another LDAP directory; it does not necessarily need AD DS.

LDAP vs. Active Directory at a glance
| Question | LDAP | Active Directory (especially AD DS) |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A protocol for accessing directory information. | Microsoft’s directory-service system; AD DS is its domain-oriented service. |
| What does it provide? | Operations for clients to access and, where permitted, change directory entries. | Directory behavior; AD DS also provides domain identity, authentication, and administration features. |
| Does it define a directory’s features? | No. The directory service determines its data model, behavior, and supported operations. | Yes. Active Directory provides its own directory features and, in AD DS, domain services. |
| Is it limited to one protocol? | It is the protocol itself. | No. Active Directory supports LDAP as well as other protocols and services. |
| When is it relevant? | When a client or application needs a protocol to access a directory. | When an environment needs Microsoft directory services; choose AD DS for domain services or AD LDS for application directory storage. |
Does Active Directory use LDAP?
Yes. LDAP is one way clients access Active Directory, including AD DS and AD LDS. But Active Directory is not “just LDAP”: AD DS also supports domain functions and other protocols, including Kerberos for domain-joined clients. Conversely, an LDAP-compatible application can connect to a directory service that is not Active Directory, provided that service supports the operations and data the application needs.

Using LDAP does not automatically mean a connection is encrypted. Microsoft warns that unsigned LDAP traffic can be vulnerable to replay and man-in-the-middle attacks, and that simple binds over clear-text connections expose credentials. LDAP signing, channel binding, and TLS are related security controls, but they are distinct; what is appropriate depends on the clients, server policy, and deployment.

Microsoft identifies TCP port 389 as the default LDAP port and TCP port 636 for LDAPS, where TLS is negotiated when the connection is established. Its LDAPS guidance identifies TCP port 3269 for global catalog LDAPS. LDAPS requires a suitable server certificate trusted by connecting clients. Microsoft’s listed certificate requirements include a matching private key, Server Authentication usage, and the domain controller’s fully qualified domain name in the certificate identity. See Microsoft’s LDAP signing and channel-binding guidance and Microsoft’s LDAPS certificate guidance for configuration details.
Do not assume that a given signing or channel-binding policy is the default for every Windows Server version or environment. Microsoft’s guidance notes that the updates it discusses did not change the default policies on existing or new domain controllers. Check the current guidance for the supported Windows Server release and the actual policies in your environment.

Which one do you need?
- You need a way for an application to access directory entries: LDAP may be the protocol it uses. Confirm which directory services, operations, and authentication methods the application supports.
- You need Microsoft domain accounts and domain administration: AD DS is the Active Directory service designed for domain-oriented identity and management.
- You need application directory storage without AD DS domain services: AD LDS is Microsoft’s LDAP-accessible option for that role.
- You are assessing an LDAP integration’s security: Check whether the client supports TLS, signing, and channel binding as required by the server’s policy; do not treat “LDAP” alone as evidence that traffic is protected.
For applications that depend on LDAP in a cloud identity setup, Microsoft separately documents LDAP authentication with Microsoft Entra Domain Services; that context is not the same as saying LDAP is itself Microsoft Entra ID. See Microsoft’s LDAP authentication overview.
