If a product or hero image is slowing Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), first confirm that the image is actually the LCP element. Then trace when its request starts, whether the browser can discover it in the initial HTML, and whether it downloads an appropriately sized file. Remove lazy loading from the LCP image, use responsive candidates, and apply high fetch priority or preload only when the trace justifies it.
What LCP measures—and when an image is responsible
LCP measures when the largest eligible image, text block, or video visible in the viewport is rendered, relative to navigation. It is not simply an image-download timer. The recommended good threshold is 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of visits, assessed separately for mobile and desktop where applicable. web.dev: Largest Contentful Paint

A large product photo may be the LCP element, but a heading or video can be instead. Confirm the element on representative page loads and viewport sizes before changing image delivery. Fixing an image that is not responsible for LCP may not improve the metric.

Use a browser performance trace or PageSpeed Insights to identify the LCP element and inspect its image request alongside navigation and other early requests. Separate a late request start from a slow transfer or delayed rendering; each points to a different fix.

- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- The request starts late: The browser may not discover the URL promptly, the image may be lazy-loaded, or its priority may be too low.
- The transfer takes a long time: Check whether the selected file is too large for the displayed slot, and whether network conditions or competing requests are contributing.
- The image finishes downloading but appears late: Look for main-thread or presentation work delaying rendering. An image delivery change alone may not address it.
Also check whether TTFB, connection setup, a font, or a different LCP element accounts for more of the delay. LCP is an end-to-end rendering outcome, so the image request is only one part of the trace.
Make the LCP image discoverable early
When possible, put the critical image URL in the initial HTML with an ordinary <img src> or responsive <img srcset>. The browser’s HTML parser can discover that request without waiting for JavaScript. A URL exposed only after JavaScript runs, or hidden in a data-src attribute until a script changes it, can start later.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
Do not lazy-load the LCP image. Lazy loading deliberately waits for viewport or layout checks before requesting an image; that delay can harm LCP. Use loading="lazy" for below-the-fold images instead. web.dev’s Optimize Largest Contentful Paint guidance says not to lazy-load the LCP image, and its responsive images guide advises against using a loading attribute for an above-the-fold hero image.

Use srcset to provide suitable image candidates and sizes to describe the slot’s rendered width. The browser can then select a candidate appropriate to the device and layout instead of downloading an oversized single asset. Declare the image’s width and height, or equivalent aspect-ratio information, to reserve space and reduce layout shifts; dimensions do not, by themselves, make the file download faster.

This is an illustrative pattern, not a universal set of widths: choose candidates and a sizes value that match the actual layout. Check the browser’s selected resource in the network panel at relevant viewport sizes. If your existing stack cannot generate and serve appropriate variants, an image transformation or CDN service may help; it is a delivery option, not a substitute for verifying the selected size.
Use high fetch priority selectively
fetchpriority="high" is a hint that can help the browser prioritize the likely LCP image. Apply it to the one image that matters rather than marking many images or other resources high priority. Too many high-priority requests can compete with one another and dilute the benefit. Check the actual request priority in the browser and compare traces before and after.

Other early images can compete for bandwidth. For example, a carousel may request slides that are not initially visible. Deprioritize or defer noncritical images when the trace shows they contend with the LCP resource; do not change them blindly.

Preload only when discovery is too late
Preload can help when the browser cannot discover the LCP image promptly from initial markup—for example, when it is referenced from CSS as a background or from JavaScript. For an image already found early in HTML, a preload may be unnecessary and can compete for limited early bandwidth. Keep preloads few and make sure the preload’s URL and responsive selection match the eventual image request, or the browser may download the resource twice.

For responsive preloads, imagesrcset and imagesizes let the browser select a candidate for the current viewport:
<link rel="preload" as="image"
imagesrcset="/images/hero-400.jpg 400w, /images/hero-800.jpg 800w, /images/hero-1200.jpg 1200w"
imagesizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 50vw">
Use this only when a preload addresses a measured discovery delay, and ensure its candidates and sizing description correspond to the image markup. The web.dev article Optimize resource loading with the Fetch Priority API describes preload as intended for resources the parser does not detect, including background LCP images.
Validate the change with field data and lab traces
Change one delivery issue at a time, then repeat the trace under comparable conditions. Check that the request begins earlier when discovery or priority was the problem, that the selected candidate fits the slot, and that no duplicate request was introduced. A lab trace helps explain a particular load; field LCP shows how real visits perform. Review field results separately for mobile and desktop where available, and allow enough visits for a meaningful comparison.

Resource changes do not guarantee an LCP improvement. In a web.dev example, Google Flights’ homepage LCP changed from 2.6 seconds to 1.9 seconds after a priority change; that is an example experiment, not a promised outcome for other pages. The same web.dev article reported that 35% of pages whose LCP element was an image had image source URLs not discoverable in the initial HTML response. That figure belongs to the article’s field-data discussion and should not be treated as a universal current estimate. web.dev: Optimize resource loading with the Fetch Priority API
