LCD vs. Plasma: How Each Screen Produces an Image

LCDs regulate light from a backlight; plasma panels emit light within their cells. Here’s what that difference means—and what it does not tell you about picture quality or availability.

An LCD controls light from a separate backlight, while a plasma display produces light inside the panel. That difference in how each screen makes an image—not its shape or resolution—is the key distinction.

How LCD and plasma displays produce an image

LCD: liquid crystals regulate a backlight

In a liquid-crystal display (LCD), liquid crystals alter how much light from a separate backlight passes through the display structure and its color filters. The crystals modulate the light; they do not illuminate the screen themselves. Canon Science Lab explains the role of liquid crystals in displays, and RTINGS describes the backlight distinction.

Plasma: cells emit light within the panel

A plasma panel creates an image with cells that produce ultraviolet light when electrically excited. That ultraviolet light stimulates phosphors to emit visible red, green, and blue light. Unlike an LCD, plasma does not use one backlight that the pixels regulate. IEEE’s history of plasma display panels documents the technology’s development.

Why an LED TV is still an LCD

In common television terminology, “LED TV” usually means an LCD television with an LED backlight. The LEDs provide the light behind the LCD panel; they are not individual picture pixels. Earlier LCD televisions commonly used CCFL backlights instead. The panel still forms the image by modulating light, as described in RTINGS’ explanation of plasma, LCD and LED.

What the difference can mean for viewing

The technologies differ in how they generate light, but the label alone does not establish which television will look better. Black levels and contrast, brightness and reflections, viewing angle, motion response, image retention or burn-in, power use, size and weight can all matter. Results depend on the particular implementation and viewing conditions; a general comparison is not a controlled test of matched models. RTINGS discusses these comparison factors, but no single ranking applies to every screen.

  • For picture quality, compare specific televisions and the criteria that matter in your room rather than choosing by technology name alone.
  • For the basic distinction, ask whether the panel modulates a separate backlight (LCD) or emits light within its cells (plasma).

How plasma became a television technology

IEEE traces plasma display development to an early single-pixel device at the University of Illinois in 1964, followed by larger, high-definition color products. This is a history of the technology, not evidence of current manufacturing or retail availability.

Does the terminology tell you what is sold today?

No. The FDA lists LCD, LED, plasma and other display technologies among those used in computer displays and televisions, but that broad overview does not establish whether new plasma televisions are currently manufactured or sold in a particular market. It also does not compare picture performance. Availability should be checked for the specific country and date rather than inferred from the technology’s history.
