A layer 2 rollup processes transactions outside Ethereum’s main network, groups them into batches, and publishes data or a state update to Ethereum. By sharing the cost of that layer 1 publication across many transactions, a rollup can reduce how much work the base layer must do for each one. The details that matter most are how the system proves an update is correct and where the data needed to check or rebuild its state is available.
What a layer 2 rollup does
Ethereum’s layer 1 is its base network. A rollup runs transaction execution in a separate layer 2 environment, then posts a batch of transaction data or a summary of the resulting state to Ethereum. Ethereum.org describes the basic idea as bundling many transactions into one transaction on layer 1: What is layer 2?

Because several transactions share the cost of publishing to layer 1, the design can make each transaction less costly to settle on the base network. It also moves much of the transaction execution away from layer 1. The exact data published and the security arrangements vary by rollup; “rollup” does not mean that every system works identically.

- Users submit transactions. They send them to the rollup’s layer 2 environment or an operator that handles transaction processing.
- The transactions are executed and grouped. The rollup updates its state and assembles transactions into a batch.
- The system publishes to Ethereum. It submits transaction data, a state update, or both to an Ethereum contract. The published information supports settlement and, depending on the design, lets independent participants verify updates or reconstruct the rollup’s state. Ethereum therefore plays an important role in the settlement and data-availability design of Ethereum rollups, even though the transactions are executed elsewhere.

Optimistic and validity-proof rollups
The two commonly discussed types differ mainly in how they establish that a proposed state update is correct.

| Optimistic rollup | It treats a submitted update as valid unless someone challenges it. A fraud-proof process can dispute an incorrect update during a challenge period. | Independent checking depends on the relevant data being available. | Validity-proof rollup, commonly called a ZK rollup | It submits a cryptographic validity proof for a proposed state update. Ethereum verifies the proof. | The proof establishes that the state transition follows the system’s rules; transaction or state data is still published so participants can reconstruct and use the rollup state. |
“Zero-knowledge rollup” is the familiar label, but the contrast here is the use of validity proofs rather than fraud challenges. Proof type alone does not describe every security property: data availability, contracts, operators, and other implementation choices matter too.

Why data availability matters
Data availability means that the information needed to verify updates or reconstruct a rollup’s state has been made available. Without access to the relevant data, independent participants may not be able to check a proposed state transition or rebuild the state needed to use the system. Ethereum.org discusses this requirement in its guides to optimistic rollups and ZK rollups.

Availability is not the same as a promise that old data will remain retrievable forever. How long data is retained, and how it can be accessed, depends on the publication mechanism and protocol rules. A validity proof also does not, by itself, guarantee that users can obtain the data needed to reconstruct state.

How a rollup differs from a validium
A validium can use validity proofs while placing transaction data availability somewhere other than Ethereum. That distinction shows why a proof alone does not define a rollup’s full security model. Ethereum.org’s layer 2 overview describes these differences and emphasizes the role of Ethereum in data availability or security.
When evaluating a particular project, look beyond its label. Check how it proves correctness, where it publishes data, how independent participants can verify or reconstruct state, and what its contracts and operators require for settlement and withdrawals. Timing and operational assumptions must be checked in that project’s current documentation.
