Three days later, the HR-software company withdrew the plan after criticism that the framing diminished the humanity of real employees. The episode concerned a proposed software feature—not legal employment status or rights for AI.
What Lattice announced on July 9, 2024
Lattice CEO Sarah Franklin announced that the company planned to support AI “digital workers” inside its people-management platform. The proposal would have created official records for those systems and treated them, operationally, much like members of a workforce.

Planned records and management features
- Onboarding and training records
- Goals and performance metrics
- Assignment to a manager
- Appropriate access to company systems
- Representation on an organizational chart
The stated idea was to help customers integrate AI agents into existing people and management processes. The announcement used employee-oriented language, but it did not establish that an AI system would be an employee under labor law or receive legal rights.

Why Lattice reversed course
On July 12, Lattice edited the original announcement and said: “This innovation sparked a lot of conversation and questions that have no answers yet. We look forward to continuing to work with our customers on the responsible use of AI, but will not further pursue digital workers in the product.”

With TangibleFuture’s autonomous behavior system, LOOI combines environmental understanding with large-model reasoning to make spontaneous decisions and express them through animation and movement. His behavior isn’t fully predictable. He has his own ideas, which makes him feel truly alive.
That update came three days after the initial announcement. Contemporary reports from Futurism and Fortune described the change as a withdrawal of the product direction following public criticism.
What human employees’ critics objected to
The backlash was not simply about whether software could be displayed on an org chart. Critics argued that describing AI agents as employees risked collapsing an important distinction between machines and people—and could make human workers appear to be another category of measurable resource.

Futurism quoted Sawyer Middeleer, identified as chief of staff at AI sales platform Aomni, saying: “This strategy and messaging misses the mark in a big way, and I say that as someone building an AI company. Treating AI agents as employees disrespects the humanity of your real employees. Worse, it implies that you view humans simply as ‘resources’ to be optimized and measured against machines.”
That is an attributed criticism, not evidence of a formal employee vote or representative poll. It captures the central concern: workplace software terminology can carry messages about how an organization values human judgment, accountability and dignity.

Did Lattice give AI workers rights?
No. The available reporting describes a proposed product representation: records, management fields, access controls and an org-chart position. It does not show Lattice granting legal personhood, employment rights, benefits, labor protections or independent authority to AI systems.
The word “rights” in coverage of the episode refers to the controversy and to the employee-like framing of the planned records. Once Lattice abandoned the feature direction, even that proposed representation was no longer being pursued in the product.

What the episode says about workplace AI systems
Operational visibility is different from employee status
Companies may need inventories, owners, permissions, performance measures and review processes for software agents. Those controls can make an AI system visible and accountable without treating it as a human worker. The Lattice proposal became controversial because it bundled those operational needs with employee terminology.

Terms such as “manager,” “performance,” “employee” and “org chart” are familiar and potentially useful interfaces. They also imply relationships, responsibilities and status. Lattice’s rapid reversal shows that customers and workers may judge the framing—not only the underlying feature set.

The legal question remains separate
Nothing in the announcement, its update or the cited contemporaneous reports establishes a legal ruling on whether AI can be an employee. The story is about corporate product messaging and public reaction, not a change in employment law.
