As of 3 October 2026, Ferguson Marine’s latest major update is that the MV Glen Rosa is in final outfitting and commissioning, with delivery anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2026. The shipyard’s longer-term outlook remains unsettled: a proposed four-vessel programme is still under government review, and no contracted shipbuilding work is scheduled for 2027 after Glen Rosa’s delivery.
Latest Ferguson Marine news
The newest dated item on Ferguson Marine’s official news listing is an apprenticeship application notice dated 1 October 2026. The listing does not provide enough detail to confirm which vacancies remain available. Other recent updates include the shipyard joining the Clyde Maritime Alliance on 11 September, an August workforce consultation, Glen Rosa’s relocation to Inchgreen Marine Park on 29 July, and the delivery of Type 26 frigate units to BAE Systems on 27 July.
In June and July, the yard also reported Glen Rosa dry-dock and build milestones. These are shipyard announcements; the status of future public-sector vessel contracts is a separate matter and remains subject to review.
When will Glen Rosa be delivered?
Ferguson Marine’s 18 August update said Glen Rosa had entered final outfitting and commissioning and anticipated delivery in Q4 2026. That is the shipyard’s current public target, not a confirmed handover date. Chief executive Graeme Thomson said: “Our immediate focus remains the safe, high-quality handover of Glen Rosa in Q4 2026.”

The Scottish Government’s February statement said Glen Sannox had completed its first year in service and also anticipated Glen Rosa in Q4 2026. That later forecast supersedes the summer 2026 estimate shown on Audit Scotland’s scope page; the older estimate should not be treated as the current target.
Will Ferguson Marine build the four proposed vessels?
Not yet. On 3 March 2026, the Scottish Government proposed a programme of four vessels for the Port Glasgow yard: two ferries under Phase Two of the Small Vessel Replacement Programme, plus replacements for the marine research vessel Scotia and fisheries protection vessel Minna. The ferries were later described in Parliament as serving the Sound of Harris and Sound of Barra.

The proposal is still subject to due diligence and legal, procurement, value-for-money and subsidy-control review. In its 17 September statement, the Government said a mandatory referral to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was required and expected the principles assessment to proceed for pre-referral assessment in the coming weeks. The CMA assesses evidence and publishes advice; ministers make the eventual decision. The vessels have not been established as awarded contracts.
The Government says the proposed programme would use most of the yard’s capacity for five years if awarded, while leaving room for additional commercial opportunities. It argues that the vessel types suit the yard’s facilities and workforce and that several replace types previously built there. Those are the Government’s reasons for proposing the work, not independent confirmation that the contracts will proceed or that delivery risks have been resolved.

The March announcement also said up to £14.2 million over two years had been committed to modernisation, subject to due diligence and formal investment decisions. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes described the proposal as “a watershed moment,” while explicitly making fulfilment conditional on due diligence and viability assessment.
What happens to the yard after Glen Rosa?
In its 17 September statement, the Scottish Government said Glen Rosa was the last vessel then under contract and that, after delivery, no contracted shipbuilding work was scheduled for 2027. That is the immediate gap the proposed four-vessel programme is intended to address; the programme remains under review rather than secured work.

A separate possible bridge activity is under discussion. The Government agreed to progress Ferguson Marine’s request for working capital to build a small number of tugboats for later commercial sale. The statement does not specify the number, customers, funding amount or final approval terms, and the tugboat proposal is distinct from the four-vessel programme.

Voluntary workforce consultation
On 18 August, Ferguson Marine opened a voluntary consultation expected to see up to 70 employees leave as workload falls during Glen Rosa’s final phase. The company said it was aligning the size and skills of the business with prospective new-build work. The figure is an upper expectation, not a confirmed departure count. Parliament later reported that no compulsory redundancies were proposed and participation was voluntary.

Apprentice posts
Ferguson Marine announced 24 apprentice posts in 2026: 10 for an August intake and 14 for January 2027, across welding, fabrication, electrical, operations and engineering. The August intake window has passed. Although the news listing carried an application notice dated 1 October, its full details are not available here, so check the current vacancy page before assuming that any January places remain open or have been filled.
Why the transition matters
The yard’s next phase brings together several different timelines: completing Glen Rosa, reviewing potential contracts, deciding whether the tugboat proposal can proceed, and retaining skills through a period without scheduled contracted shipbuilding work in 2027. The Scottish Government acknowledged frustration among Parliament, island communities and the workforce over delays and cost pressures. Audit Scotland has described Glen Sannox as six and a half years late against its original plan; that historical figure concerns Glen Sannox and should not be confused with Glen Rosa’s current forecast.
For readers assessing what may happen next, the key distinction is between completed or contracted work and proposals still under review. Glen Rosa is under contract and has a Q4 2026 delivery target; the four-vessel programme and tugboat activity are possible future work, with decisions and arrangements still outstanding.
