Biljana Tadic’s WritersWeekly roundup is headlined “8 Paying History Markets for Writers,” but its body lists nine publications. The list includes outlets reporting rates from $25 per anecdote to $1.25 per word, but those figures use different payment models and do not all describe formats currently open to pitches. Treat this as a starting list: check each publication’s current guidelines and confirm the terms for your specific assignment before submitting.
How to compare history-writing markets
A rate alone does not tell you what an assignment pays. Some outlets quote a per-word rate, others pay a flat amount per article or per estimated published page. Length, format, commissioning, rights, and time to publication also affect whether an opportunity suits you.
- Check subject fit: Several markets want a specific region, discipline, or kind of story—not history in general.
- Confirm the format is open: Some outlets accept pitches broadly; others commission particular formats or list only certain open calls.
- Clarify rights and timing: Ask about ownership, reprints, payment timing, and the likely publication date.
- Distinguish reported from verified terms: The rates below are those reported in the WritersWeekly roundup unless identified as confirmed on an accessible official page. Current terms can change.
The nine markets in the roundup
Distillations
Distillations’ pitch page seeks historically grounded stories about science’s effects on the past and present, including little-told histories and historical angles on contemporary subjects. The roundup reports $1.25 per word for features and $750 for argued essays, columns, and profiles. The Science History Institute’s current page confirms a standard feature rate of $1.25 per word and says payment is typically made within two weeks of publication. A pitch should explain the story, its relevance to readers, your approach and sources, proposed length and draft schedule, and your background and samples.
Phenomenal World
Phenomenal World focuses on political economy and publishes work by new and established scholars, researchers, and writers on history, economics, finance, policy, politics, and related fields. Its About page welcomes pitches and proposals and says it publishes in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The roundup reports 1,000–2,000-word pieces, $500 for long-form work, and $250 for interviews; the current About page does not state those rates, so confirm them with the editors.

NEXUS Magazine
The roundup reports a preferred length of 4,000–5,000 words and AUD$250 per article. NEXUS’s submission guidelines confirm the length and say the magazine normally pays AUD$250 per published article. Payment and publication details are discussed upon acceptance, and the magazine says it does not retain ownership of the article. Response times can range from two days to two months. The guidelines also advise writers to check previous issues and say advertorials are not accepted.
Western Pennsylvania History
Western Pennsylvania History’s author guidelines seek analysis of historical events with a strong Western Pennsylvania connection. The roundup reports a 3,000–4,000-word article and 8–10 high-resolution images. The guidelines, updated January 24, 2023, say authors are typically paid $250 upon publication; book reviews are unpaid. The History Center retains copyright and reprint rights. The page warns that the next two issues may already be filled, so publication could take a year. Check the guidelines for updates before relying on these terms.

LIBER
The roundup describes LIBER as a feminist publication that includes feminist history. It reports $100 per book review, $50 per poem, and $100–$300 for features. The linked pitch page was not available for verification, so the current submission window, fit, and rates are not established here. Check LIBER’s own guidelines before pitching.
Atlas Obscura
The roundup describes Atlas Obscura’s history coverage as original, carefully researched stories about places. It reports that most commissioned articles are 800–1,500 words and usually pay around $0.50 per word, with rates depending on length, reporting, and format. The linked guideline document was not available for verification; treat both the rate and pitch process as roundup-reported, and confirm current terms with the publication.

Wonderful West Virginia
Wonderful West Virginia’s guidelines confirm approximately 1,500 words and payment of $150 upon publication. The magazine accepts experienced freelance writers on state history, wildlife and nature, cultural heritage, special places and attractions, and interesting people. It prefers a proposal with a query, résumé, cover letter, and three to five published clips. Accepted stories may be scheduled a year or more in advance.
Contingent
Contingent’s current pitch page prioritizes applicants with completed postgraduate work in history or a related field who work outside the tenure-track professoriate. The page lists mailbag columns of roughly 400–500 words and postcards as open; their base pay is $150 and $50, respectively. Reviews, shorts, mini-essays, field trips, interviews, and features are marked closed. The page displays base rates of $300 for reviews, shorts, field trips, and features; $150 for mini-essays; and $50 for interviews, but those closed formats are not currently available to pitch according to the page.

Naval History
The U.S. Naval Institute’s Naval History guidelines say an article must be fewer than 3,000 words. The roundup reports $60–$150 per estimated published page of 1,000 words, $75 for commissioned reviews, $250–$500 for pictorials, and $25 for anecdotes. The official page confirms the per-page range and says reviews and pictorials are commissioned; unsolicited reviews are discouraged. Submit manuscripts as Word documents through the online portal. Payment is upon publication.

Start with the story’s subject and evidence, then shortlist publications whose readers and remit match it. A Western Pennsylvania case study has a clear regional fit at Western Pennsylvania History; a science-and-history narrative may suit Distillations; a history story framed through political economy may fit Phenomenal World. For a pitch to Wonderful West Virginia, focus on the state and the subjects named in its guidelines. A strong fit is more useful than sending the same general history proposal to every outlet.

Before submitting, check the live guidelines and ask the editor to confirm the applicable rate, word count, format availability, rights, payment schedule, and likely publication timing. This is especially important where terms are only reported by the roundup, where a page is dated, or where a publication marks some formats closed.
