Latent-GRPO is a proposed post-training method for applying Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to vocabulary-space latent reasoning. Instead of expressing each intermediate thought as ordinary text tokens, a model reasons through continuous mixtures in vocabulary space. The method aims to make reinforcement-learning updates more stable for this kind of reasoning; it is a research approach, not a general-purpose model or consumer product.
What Latent-GRPO changes about reinforcement learning
In conventional language-model reasoning, intermediate steps are represented as text tokens. In vocabulary-space latent reasoning, intermediate thoughts are continuous mixtures rather than ordinary text. That distinction matters: a latent state can be useful for computation without being a readable sentence, and the method should not be confused with every approach that uses continuous hidden states.

Latent-GRPO applies GRPO-style reinforcement learning after a model has learned this form of latent reasoning through supervised fine-tuning, or Latent-SFT. The authors’ goal is to improve task performance while retaining short latent reasoning chains. Their paper identifies three related problems that can make direct GRPO updates unstable:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Exploration can leave the valid latent manifold. A rollout may enter a latent state that is not a meaningful or useful continuation of the model’s learned latent reasoning.
- A trajectory-level reward may not identify which tokens deserve credit. A reward assigned to a whole response can lead to incorrect token-level updates when the trajectory contains both helpful and unhelpful steps.
- Combining correct paths can still produce a bad state. Reinforcing multiple correct latent paths together may average them into an invalid state rather than preserving a coherent path.
These are the instability mechanisms the authors describe, not a claim that every GRPO run or latent-reasoning method fails in these ways. The method and its motivation are presented in the Latent-GRPO paper.

How the three design elements address those problems
| Design element | Problem it targets | Intended role |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid-sample advantage masking | Rollouts that move off the valid latent manifold | Mask invalid samples’ advantages so they do not drive the policy update. |
| One-sided noise sampling | Unstable exploration during latent rollouts | Constrain noise sampling in one direction as part of the method’s exploration strategy. |
| Optimal correct-path first-token selection | Several correct paths being reinforced together and averaged into an invalid state | Select a first token from the correct paths rather than treating their combination as a single averaged path. |
The names and roles above describe the authors’ stated design at a high level. The available aggregate results do not establish that any one component alone accounts for the reported gains.
What the authors report on math benchmarks
The paper reports results on four low-difficulty math benchmarks, including GSM8K-Aug, and four high-difficulty benchmarks, including AIME. Its headline figures are aggregate experimental results reported by the authors in 2026, not independent replications or guarantees for other tasks or models.
| Setting | Reported result | Comparison and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Low-difficulty benchmarks | +7.86 Pass@1 points | Latent-GRPO compared with its latent initialization, across the paper’s low-difficulty tasks. |
| High-difficulty benchmarks | +4.27 Pass@1 points | Latent-GRPO compared with explicit GRPO, across the paper’s high-difficulty tasks. |
| High-difficulty reasoning chains | 3–4 times shorter | Reported by the authors alongside the high-difficulty comparison; the aggregate claim should not be read as a per-benchmark length result. |
| Gumbel sampling | Stronger Pass@k | The paper reports stronger Pass@k under Gumbel sampling; the abstract does not provide a per-benchmark value here. |
Pass@1 measures whether the first sampled answer is correct; Pass@k concerns whether a correct answer appears among k sampled attempts. The paper’s abstract does not give enough detail to expand the headline aggregates into per-benchmark values or full experimental settings. For a fair comparison, identify the benchmark and task difficulty, accuracy metric, reasoning-chain length, and sampling mode rather than treating one headline number as a universal ranking. See the paper’s abstract and tables for the authors’ reported results.
What is required to run the implementation
The official Latent-GRPO repository provides research code and describes data preprocessing, a customized SGLang inference and rollout engine, a modified verl-0.4.x training stack, training scripts, and evaluation scripts. It lists checkpoints for LLaMA 3.2 1B Instruct and Qwen2.5-Math 7B.

The key prerequisite is a model initialized with Latent-SFT. The repository explicitly warns against starting Latent-GRPO from a model without that initialization: direct latent reinforcement learning can become unstable and collapse. In practical terms, this is not a drop-in way to apply GRPO to an arbitrary language model. Before attempting a run, use the repository’s instructions to match the supported initialization, code components, and evaluation setup.
Quick Recap
How to interpret a Latent-GRPO comparison
- Check the starting point: determine whether the model was Latent-SFT initialized, since that is the stated prerequisite for the method.
- Separate task difficulty and benchmark: the reported low- and high-difficulty aggregates cover different benchmark sets, so do not merge them into one accuracy claim.
- Read accuracy and chain length together: a result with shorter reasoning chains is not directly comparable to one that reports accuracy alone.
- Record the sampling mode: the implementation documents deterministic and Gumbel evaluation options, and the paper reports a Pass@k result under Gumbel sampling.
- Avoid overgeneralizing: the reported gains are the paper authors’ benchmark experiments, not evidence that Latent-GRPO outperforms other methods in every setting.
