There is no single best LastPass replacement for everyone. Compare the services’ free-plan limits, device support, sharing, account recovery, migration options and annual cost against how you actually use a password manager. Bitwarden is a practical first comparison if you want a free starting point and published annual prices; Proton Pass may suit readers interested in Proton’s privacy positioning and ecosystem; and 1Password documents a LastPass import route through its desktop app.
Which password manager should I switch to from LastPass?
Begin with the features that affect your daily use, not a general “best” label. The right choice depends on whether you need to sync across devices on a free plan, share logins with a household or team, recover access if you lose a device, or use passkeys and two-factor authentication. Check the current plan details and the official migration instructions before committing; prices and plan limits can change.

Providers’ plan pages describe their own products. They can establish what a provider says it offers, but they do not by themselves establish that one manager is more secure than another.
What do the 2026 security findings mean?
In 2026, ITPro reported that ETH Zurich researchers demonstrated 12 attacks against Bitwarden, seven against LastPass, and six against Dashlane. These figures refer to demonstrated attacks, not confirmed customer vault breaches. ITPro also reported that vendors issued fixes for addressable issues and that there was no evidence of exploitation at the time of publication. The counts alone do not show how the attacks worked or how they compare in real-world risk.

LastPass’s security page describes its use of AES-256 and PBKDF2-SHA-256 and outlines infrastructure and security changes made after the 2022 incident. Those are LastPass’s statements about its own practices, not independent verification. The 2022 incident is relevant context when assessing trust, but it should not be conflated with the separate ETH Zurich attack demonstrations.
Bitwarden likewise describes its encryption as end-to-end AES-256, with salted hashing and PBKDF2-SHA-256. Encryption details matter, but no single algorithm or provider statement guarantees that a service is risk-free. Consider independent security evidence alongside recovery, authentication, sharing, and the way you use the product.

How can you move from LastPass safely?
Import procedures differ by service. 1Password’s official guide documents a LastPass import through its desktop app; do not assume that other managers use the same steps. Follow the destination service’s current official instructions.
- Review the destination’s import instructions. Confirm the supported source format and the required app or device before exporting anything.
- Protect any exported file. A password export can expose your credentials. Keep it somewhere access-controlled and do not leave it in a shared folder or inbox.
- Import and inspect the result. Check important logins, notes, folders, and shared vaults in the new manager rather than assuming every entry transferred correctly.
- Confirm access before closing the old account. Make sure you can sign in on the devices you use and that shared items are available to the intended people.
- Remove the export file when it is no longer needed. An unprotected credential export can remain sensitive even after import.
Should you add a hardware security key?
A hardware security key is an optional extra for accounts that support compatible keys; it is not required to use a password manager. TechRadar identifies YubiKey OTP among Bitwarden Premium’s authentication options. Confirm that the key model and authentication method you want work with the password manager and with the other accounts you intend to protect.

Shortlist the services that support your devices and sharing needs, then compare the exact plans you would use. If a free tier matters, verify its device and feature limits. If switching is the priority, check the official import steps before choosing. Finally, weigh provider security descriptions against independent evidence and decide whether the service’s recovery and authentication options suit your risk tolerance.
