Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: For a phone-based YouTube stream that should continue while you use other apps, both Larix Broadcaster and PRISM Live Studio have documented background options on Android. Larix is the more configurable encoder; PRISM is the more production-oriented mobile studio. On iOS, neither app’s documentation supports background camera video. And neither app’s published documentation establishes dependable, unattended 24/7 operation from a phone.
If you mean a YouTube channel that must keep playing uploaded videos around the clock, rather than a phone camera stream that stays active while you multitask, a cloud service is a better fit. StreamNeo is built for looping uploaded video to YouTube without leaving a computer on; its first day is free with no card.

Larix vs PRISM: the differences that matter

| YouTube support | YouTube lists Larix as an approved mobile encoder. Softvelum documents RTMP publishing and other protocols. | YouTube lists PRISM as a mobile encoder. PRISM documents YouTube account and custom RTMP connection routes. | Both can send a mobile stream to YouTube; support for YouTube does not establish continuous uptime. | Background video on Android | Softvelum says background streaming is available by default until the app is explicitly closed. | Enable “Allow display over other apps” so broadcasting can continue while you use other apps. | Android is the documented option on either app for continuing a stream while the app is unfocused. | Long-session limit | Free RTMP/SRT streaming stops after 30 minutes, then allows another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay before stopping. No stated cap for PRISM is not proof of unlimited operation. Larix Premium details. |
| Production and configuration | Supports protocols including RTMP and SRT, overlays, and pause/standby modes; some advanced capabilities are paid. | Designed for mobile live production, with overlays, source composition, chroma key, and screen modes. | PRISM may suit a decorated mobile show; Larix may suit an encoder-first workflow. Which app should you choose?
Choose Larix on Android for encoder flexibility
Larix is the stronger fit if you want protocol and connection flexibility, and its Android background behavior is documented as available by default until you explicitly close the app. For longer RTMP or SRT sessions, account for the free-tier limit: the stream stops after the initial 30 minutes plus a further 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay. Softvelum says Premium removes that streaming time limit, but this is an app limit—not a guarantee that a phone can host a stream indefinitely.

Choose PRISM on Android for an integrated mobile production workflow
PRISM is a reasonable choice if its account-based YouTube workflow and mobile production tools—such as overlays, source composition, chroma key, or screen modes—match your show. Enable its documented Android permission to display over other apps. Keep the scene simple: PRISM’s guide gives different source limits by operating system and mode and warns that too many sources can overload a stream. Check the source guidance for your mode.

Do not treat either app as a proven 24/7 phone host
“Background streaming” means the app may continue when it is not in the foreground; it does not mean unattended, round-the-clock uptime. The published documentation for these apps does not establish that a particular phone can run for 24 hours or longer without interruption. A phone still needs reliable power, a stable connection, and a manageable operating temperature, and the reviewed sources provide no device-specific endurance guarantee.
What changes between Android and iPhone?
Android: background operation is documented, with different setup
Larix says its Android app can work in the background until you close it explicitly. PRISM requires the Android “Allow display over other apps” permission for background broadcasting. Confirm the permission is enabled in the phone’s settings and test the stream on the device and network you plan to use.

iOS: neither app documents background camera streaming
PRISM says background live broadcasting is unsupported on iOS. Larix says iOS background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, so it does not provide a way to keep camera video streaming after the app is backgrounded. Larix describes audio-only background capture, which is not the same as a background video stream. The PRISM guide’s platform guidance may change with app and OS releases, so check the instructions for the version in use.
How to connect either app to YouTube
Larix: configure YouTube RTMP
- Get the YouTube connection details. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Set up Larix’s destination. Follow Softvelum’s RTMP instructions. Larix explains that the full connection URL is formed by combining the server/application address with the stream key. Use the exact values YouTube provides; do not substitute a guessed URL.
- Test before relying on the stream. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, confirm that YouTube receives picture and sound, then check what happens when Larix is backgrounded. This tests your actual app, handset, permissions, and network rather than proving 24/7 reliability.
See Softvelum’s Larix documentation for its connection details and YouTube’s mobile encoder information.

PRISM: use its YouTube account or custom RTMP route
- Choose the connection route. PRISM’s YouTube guide describes its YouTube workflow; its FAQ also describes connecting a platform account or entering a custom RTMP server and stream key when needed.
- Enable Android background permission if applicable. Turn on “Allow display over other apps” before testing a stream that must continue while you switch apps.
- Build a minimal scene. Add only the sources the stream needs. Source capacity differs by OS and mode, and a more complex scene can burden the stream.
- End the broadcast inside PRISM. PRISM’s FAQ warns that the app may continue transmitting according to platform RTMP policy even if the viewing platform appears to have ended the broadcast. Use PRISM’s End control to stop cleanly.
Use the current PRISM setup guide, background instructions, and PRISM FAQ for the release you have installed.
Practical checks before a long stream
- Confirm what “always-on” means. Staying live while you open another app is a different requirement from running unattended around the clock.
- Check the platform and OS behavior. Android has documented background options in both apps; the reviewed iOS guidance rules out background camera video.
- Account for plan limits. Larix’s free RTMP/SRT allowance is time-limited; review Softvelum’s current Premium terms before choosing a paid plan.
- Keep scenes and overlays purposeful. Extra sources can add load, particularly in a persistent broadcast; PRISM advises minimizing sources for stability.
- Protect the stream key. Anyone with access to it may be able to publish to your stream. Store it privately and replace it if exposed.
- Plan to stop from the app. When using PRISM, end the broadcast with its End control instead of assuming that closing the viewing page stops transmission.
- Test the real setup. Check power, network, audio/video, background behavior, and recovery on the exact phone and app version. A successful short test does not establish unattended endurance.
