For a large basement, choose capacity by both floor area and dampness: ENERGY STAR recommends at least 30 pints per day for a space over 2,000 square feet that is slightly to moderately damp, 40 pints for a very damp space, and 50 pints for a wet space. Then check that the rating uses the current test method, that the unit can drain where you need it, and that its operating range suits your basement temperature.
What size dehumidifier do I need for a large basement?
Use the basement’s area and its visible or noticeable moisture conditions together. ENERGY STAR’s capacity ranges are recommendations, not guarantees that a unit will correct moisture caused by a leak or another unresolved source.

| Basement area | Slightly to moderately damp | Very damp | Wet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 2,000 square feet | 20–30 pints per day | 25–40 pints per day | 30–50 pints per day |
| Over 2,000 square feet | 30+ pints per day | 40+ pints per day | 50+ pints per day |
ENERGY STAR describes slightly or moderately damp conditions as a musty smell or a damp feel; very damp conditions can include persistent dampness or damp spots; wet conditions can include sweating walls or floors and seepage. Its guidance says, “Remember, it’s better to oversize than undersize!” Treat that as a general sizing rule, not a substitute for addressing water entering the basement. ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance provides the sizing recommendations and condition descriptions.

How should I compare pints-per-day ratings?
Check which test procedure produced the number on the label. The U.S. Department of Energy’s newer procedure tests portable dehumidifiers at 65°F, a temperature intended to better reflect basement conditions. Ratings from different testing eras are therefore not directly interchangeable. ENERGY STAR gives a rough conversion: an older 50-pint rating corresponds to about 30 pints per day under the newer method, while an older 70-pint rating corresponds to about 40–45 pints per day. Actual model changes vary. ENERGY STAR’s testing guidance explains the newer basis and rough comparisons.

When comparing candidates, use the current-procedure capacity where available rather than choosing by a familiar older number. ENERGY STAR’s product finder can help verify listed model data and certification; a listing alone does not establish that a model will outperform another or suit a particular basement.
How much efficiency should I look for?
ENERGY STAR measures dehumidifier efficiency using integrated energy factor (IEF), in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. A higher IEF generally indicates greater efficiency. Under Version 6.0, effective October 1, 2025, portable units rated at 25.01–50 pints per day must reach at least 2.01 L/kWh for ENERGY STAR qualification; units rated at 50.01 pints per day or more must reach at least 3.30 L/kWh. These are certification thresholds, not a prediction of your electricity bill. The current criteria state the thresholds.

ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers are 20% more efficient than non-certified models. That is a program-level statement, not a promise that every certified unit will use exactly 20% less energy in every home. Check both the model’s IEF and its certification status rather than treating capacity alone as a measure of running cost. ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier guidance describes the certification benefit.

Some models accept a hose for gravity drainage to a floor drain or sump pump, which can avoid routine bucket emptying. Confirm that the particular model supports the arrangement and that the hose can reach an appropriate drain with the required routing. A removable bucket is simpler where a drain is unavailable, but it needs emptying; many units shut off automatically when the bucket is full. Check the manual for the exact drain setup and shutoff behavior.

Will a dehumidifier work in a cold basement?
Temperature can limit moisture removal. ENERGY STAR notes that frost can form on a dehumidifier’s coils below 65°F and interfere with operation through compressor cycling. Before buying, check the model’s minimum operating temperature and defrost behavior against the coldest conditions in the basement; a room that regularly falls below the listed range may not be suitable for that unit. ENERGY STAR’s buying guidance discusses cold-temperature limitations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What else helps control basement humidity?
A humidistat lets a unit cycle around a selected relative-humidity set point. ENERGY STAR gives 30%–50% relative humidity as the general optimum range for a building and notes that levels above that range may promote mold growth. A separate hygrometer can help you see whether conditions are near the target rather than relying only on how the room feels. If water is entering through the foundation, improving foundation drainage may reduce basement humidity; a dehumidifier should not be treated as a repair for seepage. ENERGY STAR’s guidance covers humidity control and drainage.

A practical comparison checklist
- Match current-test capacity to the basement’s square footage and observed dampness.
- Compare IEF and confirm certification status using the model listing.
- Choose bucket, gravity-hose, or pump drainage only after confirming the model supports it and the destination can take the water.
- Check the minimum operating temperature and defrost behavior for the basement’s conditions.
- Consider foundation drainage or other moisture-source corrections if there is seepage or persistent dampness.
