For a standard self-managed deployment, deploy the new code, run php artisan queue:restart, and let a process monitor replace the workers. Laravel 13.31 adds connection and queue details to the WorkerStopping event when a worker is killed; it is not the release that introduced graceful signal handling.
What SIGTERM does to a Laravel queue worker
A queue worker is a long-lived process: it keeps the application code it loaded at startup. Laravel’s current 13.x queue documentation says a worker that receives SIGQUIT, SIGTERM, or SIGINT while processing a job finishes that job before exiting. That is a graceful stop request, not a promise that the job will finish if the host or container forcibly kills the process before its shutdown allowance runs out. Laravel queue documentation

Because an exiting worker does not automatically become a new process, a process monitor such as Supervisor must start a replacement. The replacement starts against the deployed code; the old worker does not switch code in place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGracefully restart workers during a self-managed deployment
- Deploy the new application code. Workers already running continue with the code loaded when they started.
- Run
php artisan queue:restartin the application’s deployment context. Laravel writes a restart signal to the cache. Workers check that signal and exit after their current job rather than taking another one. - Let the process monitor replace each exiting worker. Confirm that the monitor is configured to keep the desired workers running.
- Check cache visibility. The command and workers need to use a working cache configuration that lets them see the same restart signal. A process-local or otherwise unsuitable cache can keep workers from observing it.
- Align shutdown and retry settings. Check job duration, worker timeout, queue retry timing, and the host or orchestrator’s SIGTERM grace period together.
Laravel documents the restart command and cache-based signal in its queue guide. The exact time a platform grants a process to exit is platform-specific; inspect the relevant host or orchestrator settings rather than assuming Laravel controls that interval.

queue:restart for queue workers
This is Laravel’s queue-worker restart path. It coordinates through the application’s cache and causes workers to leave after their current job. Use it when you want Laravel workers to pick up deployed code, and ensure a process monitor brings them back.
php artisan reload for reloadable services
Laravel’s deployment documentation describes php artisan reload as a way to terminate reloadable long-running services when a deployment is managed outside Laravel Cloud. Laravel Cloud handles graceful service reloads automatically. These deployment paths are distinct from sending an infrastructure-level SIGTERM directly to a process. See Laravel’s deployment documentation.

Platform-sent SIGTERM
A host or orchestrator may send SIGTERM as part of its shutdown or deployment policy, but whether it does so and how long it waits before forceful termination depends on that platform. Laravel’s graceful behavior applies only while the process is allowed to run.

Give long-running jobs a chance to stop cleanly
Ordinary jobs can finish their active work before the worker exits. For work such as a long import, a job may need to stop fetching records or persist progress before shutdown. Laravel provides the IlluminateContractsQueueInterruptible contract for this job-level response. Implement the contract and define interrupted; Laravel passes the received signal number to that method. Laravel queue documentation

Use that hook to make progress safe across retries—for example, persist progress in a way that can be resumed without corrupting or duplicating work. It is an opportunity to respond to interruption, not an unlimited shutdown guarantee: the platform can still terminate the process when its grace period expires.
Keep timeout and retry timing compatible
Laravel documents a default worker --timeout of 60 seconds, but that default is not automatically right for every job. The queue guide says to set --timeout several seconds shorter than retry_after. If the retry interval expires while a job is still running, the queue may make that job available again and it could run twice. For Amazon SQS, use the queue’s visibility timeout as the corresponding retry control. Laravel queue documentation

Choose values based on the expected job duration and your connection’s configuration. Where duplicate execution would cause harm, make the job idempotent so repeating it does not repeat its effects.
What changed in Laravel 13.31
The Laravel Framework changelog lists v13.31.0 on September 8, 2026. Its specific queue-related change adds connection and queue information to the WorkerStopping event when a worker is killed. This improves the context available to code handling that event; it should not be confused with the existing documented behavior for graceful termination signals or with the Interruptible job contract. Check the installed patch version before relying on the added event details. Laravel release notes Laravel Framework changelog
