Laravel Inertia Architecture: When to Use Vue and When React Makes Sense

Inertia keeps Laravel in charge of routes and server behavior while Vue or React renders page components. Here’s how to choose the frontend that fits your Laravel team.

Inertia lets Laravel keep handling routes, controllers, middleware, authentication, authorization, and data fetching while Vue or React renders JavaScript page components. Both are supported; there is no documented universal winner. For most teams, the practical starting point is the framework they already know, checked against the project’s existing frontend code, maintenance needs, and architectural requirements.

What Inertia changes in a Laravel application

Inertia is a bridge between a backend such as Laravel and a JavaScript frontend, not a replacement for either one. Laravel continues to define the application’s server-side behavior. A controller returns an Inertia page component and the data, or props, that component needs. Inertia’s v1 “How it works” guide describes this division of responsibilities.

On client-side navigation, an Inertia link or visit makes an XHR request. The server responds with the page component name and its data; the client updates the displayed component and browser history. The result is SPA-style navigation while keeping the standard route and data flow on the Laravel side. This avoids requiring a separate API or client router for ordinary Inertia routes.

Does Inertia need an API?

Not for the standard Inertia page flow. Laravel routes and controllers can return Inertia pages and props directly, so a separate API is not a prerequisite for building the frontend this way. That does not prevent a project from also having an API for other clients or use cases; it means Inertia’s normal navigation does not depend on creating one. See the v1 explanation of Inertia’s request and response flow.

Should a Laravel team choose Vue or React?

Choose based on the codebase and the people who will maintain it, not on an assumed performance or productivity advantage. Inertia documentation supports both Vue and React adapters, and Laravel starter-kit scaffolding has been described for both. The documentation does not establish that one is faster, more productive, smaller, or easier to hire for in every context. Inertia’s homepage describes its framework choices, while the v1 client-side setup guide covers adapters and starter-kit setup.

Favor the framework your team already knows

Existing fluency is a useful default: a team that can confidently build, debug, and maintain Vue or React pages can spend more attention on the product instead of adopting another frontend framework. Treat this as project-specific judgment, not a measured claim that one choice universally improves delivery.

Account for existing frontend code and conventions

If the application already has Vue or React components, libraries, or design-system code, check whether they can be retained and whether their conventions fit the new pages. Reusing a coherent ecosystem can matter more than switching frameworks for a theoretical advantage. Inertia supports both choices, but the sources do not compare their feature sets or compatibility library by library.

Plan for the people who will maintain it

Consider which skills are available within the organization and who is likely to own the application over time. The cited documentation does not provide labor-market data or a hiring ranking for Vue versus React, so local recruiting realities should guide this part of the decision.

Match the frontend ecosystem to the interface

Map the application’s UI complexity and integration requirements to the frontend ecosystem the team wants to use. Inertia’s support for both does not, by itself, settle which better fits a particular interface; the available documentation does not offer a feature-by-feature comparison.

Check that server-defined routing fits

Inertia’s standard routes remain defined on the server. This suits teams that want Laravel to own routing and application behavior. If the project requires a frontend-owned router or an API-first boundary, verify that architectural fit before selecting Inertia. The v1 routing guide explains the server-routed model.

Do I need Vue Router or React Router?

Not for standard Inertia routes: Laravel defines them, and Inertia’s client navigation follows those server routes. The v1 routing guide says Vue Router or React Router is unnecessary for this model. If the application has a separate need for frontend-owned routing, assess that requirement independently rather than assuming Inertia’s normal routing flow provides it.

How do forms and validation work?

Forms use Inertia’s request flow to submit to Laravel, where the application can perform its usual validation. The v1 forms guide documents Laravel validation errors being handled through Laravel validation exceptions and made available to the frontend. This is a backend-based interaction, not a reason to prefer Vue over React or vice versa. See Inertia’s v1 forms guide.

When should a team add server-side rendering?

SSR is an operational choice, not a prerequisite for using Inertia. It can add build, runtime, and deployment work, so decide whether the project needs it and check the guide for the exact installed Inertia version before configuring it. The detailed guide available here is explicitly for Inertia v1: it describes a Node.js SSR process and, in its Vue instructions, a Vue server-renderer dependency. Those details should not be treated as universal current commands or requirements. Consult the v1 SSR guide and verify instructions against the version being installed.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose the Vue or React adapter your team can confidently maintain, unless existing code or a project requirement points elsewhere.
  • Check whether the project’s existing components, libraries, and design-system conventions favor one ecosystem.
  • Confirm that Laravel-owned routes fit the application; Inertia’s normal route flow is not a frontend-owned router or an API-first architecture.
  • Assess SSR separately, and follow version-matched setup and deployment guidance if you enable it.
  • Use current Laravel starter-kit documentation for installation steps rather than assuming a version-specific setup guide remains current.

The central architectural decision is whether the team wants Laravel to remain responsible for application routing and server behavior while JavaScript page components provide the frontend. Once that fits, Vue and React are both supported options; the deciding factor is the actual team and codebase, not a universal ranking.
