Update time varies with the connection, network settings, and update size, and Microsoft does not set a universal wait time for this particular screen. First note how long it has been displayed and whether the screen changes, the laptop restarts, or Windows reaches sign-in. What to try next depends on whether Windows starts.
Is the “Getting Windows ready” screen actually stuck?
Windows may take different amounts of time to download and install an update. Microsoft says the time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size; it does not give a universal timer for this exact message. A screen that has not changed briefly is not enough to establish that the update has failed.

Observe whether progress or other on-screen activity changes and whether the laptop restarts during the update. If Windows eventually reaches sign-in, use the Windows-starts steps below. If it will not start, move to Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Do not treat an arbitrary elapsed-time threshold as proof of failure.
If Windows reaches sign-in
Start with Windows Update troubleshooting, which is less disruptive than recovery or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft recommends running the Windows Update troubleshooter and checking for updates again when an update remains at the same percentage. Follow the instructions for your version of Windows in Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide.

Use DISM and SFC only when appropriate
If update troubleshooting points to damaged system files, Microsoft documents running DISM and then System File Checker from an elevated command prompt. These are repair options, not a diagnosis of why the laptop displayed the message. Enter the commands exactly as documented:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand allow it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannow.
See Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions for the applicable Windows version and details.
If Windows will not start: use WinRE
WinRE is Windows’ recovery environment, with tools for startup problems and other recovery tasks. It may appear automatically after repeated unsuccessful starts. Depending on what is available on your laptop, you can also reach it through Advanced startup in Windows, Shift+Restart, a recovery drive, or Windows installation media. The options and labels can vary by Windows version and device; follow the prompts on screen. Microsoft explains the routes in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
If device encryption is enabled, recovery may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. Have it available before proceeding. Microsoft notes this requirement for Startup Repair.
Try Startup Repair
- In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Startup Repair diagnoses and attempts to fix common problems that prevent Windows from starting. It is not a guaranteed fix for an update that appears stalled.
Consider uninstalling a recent update
If the startup problem began immediately after a Windows update, WinRE may let you remove it: choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then follow the prompts. Microsoft says some updates cannot be uninstalled, so this is a conditional option rather than a routine first step. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling a Windows update.

Use Safe Mode for diagnosis
From WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, then restart and select a Safe Mode option when shown. Safe Mode starts Windows with essential services and drivers. Microsoft says that if the problem does not recur there, default settings, basic drivers, and services can be ruled out as possible causes. Read Microsoft’s guide to Windows startup settings before choosing an option.

Keep reset or reinstall as later options
Microsoft recommends starting with less disruptive recovery choices, because some options can cause data loss. A Windows reset may offer choices to keep personal files or remove everything, but read the exact prompts for your version and preserve a backup if possible. Reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything from the device. Microsoft’s recovery options guide describes these consequences and notes that manufacturer recovery media may include device-specific drivers and factory applications.
If the laptop cannot start and you have no recovery drive, Microsoft documents creating Windows installation media on another working PC and using it to reach recovery tools. A USB flash drive for Windows installation media is an optional advanced recovery aid; it does not fix the update by itself. Do not choose a reinstall unless you understand that it removes the device’s contents.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context
The Microsoft recovery and troubleshooting pages cited here cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The version installed on the laptop, its manufacturer and model, encryption status, backup state, and the update involved can all affect the available recovery choices; use the on-screen options and the guidance for the device.
