Before joining public Wi-Fi, update your laptop, disable file sharing, and stop it from automatically joining unfamiliar networks. Then use HTTPS and check the website address. Public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites encrypt traffic, but these settings help reduce exposure to nearby devices, unsafe destinations, and outdated software.

Install updates on a trusted connection
Before you travel, install available updates for your operating system, browser, and security software. Turn on automatic updates where available. Updates help address known software problems; when practical, CISA recommends updating devices over a trusted network. CISA’s wireless security guidance is older (published in 2006 and updated in 2008), so its durable advice should not be read as a current guide to laptop menus.

Turn off file sharing on public networks
Disable file sharing before using a public wireless access point. This reduces the chance that nearby devices can access files you have made available on the network. CISA specifically advises turning off file sharing for public wireless use. The exact setting name and location depend on your operating system and version.

Disable automatic connection to unfamiliar Wi-Fi
Where your operating system offers the option, prevent the laptop from automatically joining open or unfamiliar networks. This helps avoid connecting to a network you did not mean to use. Menu names and controls vary by operating system and version.

Keep the firewall and security software enabled
Do not turn off your laptop’s firewall or security software to get online at a hotspot. Keep them current alongside your operating system and browser. These protections help address risks on the device; they do not verify that a Wi-Fi network or website is legitimate.
Use the browser safely on the hotspot
Check HTTPS and the domain
Prefer sites whose address begins with https://, and check that the domain is the one you intended to visit before signing in or entering information. The FTC says most websites now encrypt traffic and public Wi-Fi is usually safe, but HTTPS does not prove a site is trustworthy: scammers can also operate encrypted sites. Do not submit sensitive information over an unencrypted connection
Avoid entering sensitive information on a site that does not use HTTPS. A secure connection protects data in transit between your browser and the site; it does not protect you from giving information to a fraudulent site.

Use a VPN for organizational access when required
If you need to connect to an employer’s or another organization’s network, use its approved VPN or secure-access method and follow its instructions. The FTC recommends a VPN for public Wi-Fi access to an organization’s network. CISA’s 2024 federal mobile-workplace guidance says to activate an authorized VPN promptly after connecting to a third-party network; that guidance is for federal mobile-workplace contexts, not a universal consumer rule. See CISA’s telework guidance and the FTC business guidance on protecting personal information.
A VPN does not fix an insecure laptop, make a fake website legitimate, or remove every risk of working in a public place. For ordinary browsing, the FTC’s guidance does not make buying a consumer VPN a requirement.

Protect the laptop if it is lost or stolen
Keep full-disk or device encryption enabled and maintain a backup of important files. These measures protect data stored on the laptop if it is lost or stolen; they address a different risk from someone intercepting traffic over Wi-Fi. The FTC’s personal-information guidance covers protecting information on devices.

Quick checklist before joining
- Operating system, browser, and security software are up to date.
- File sharing is off for public Wi-Fi.
- Automatic connection to unfamiliar networks is disabled where that control is available.
- Firewall and security software remain enabled.
- For organizational access, you know which approved VPN or secure-access method to use.
