Consumer Reports and Which? publish useful but different reliability evidence: one estimates problems during the first three years for its US members, while the other surveys UK owners about faults over as long as seven years. Neither public source supports combining those results into one worldwide ranking.
What the 2026 reliability evidence says
Consumer Reports: predicted problems within three years
Consumer Reports’ analysis, updated January 8, 2026, draws on surveys conducted in 2023, 2024, and 2025. It covers 75,923 portable computers bought new between 2019 and 2025 by Consumer Reports members. A statistical model estimates how often problems are likely to occur by the end of the third year of ownership. This is a prediction based on members’ reported experiences—not a controlled failure test or a promise about any particular laptop.

Across the laptops in that analysis, 16% broke or stopped working as they should within three years. Consumer Reports also reports that nearly six in ten broken laptops were taken in for repair, and that 22% of laptops bought during the covered period had an extended warranty or service contract. Those figures describe the surveyed group, not the expected outcome for every buyer. Read Consumer Reports’ laptop reliability analysis.

Which?’s laptop reliability article, dated August 4, 2026, is based on an online survey conducted in February and March 2026. It included 15,755 technology owners, of whom 6,971 owned laptops. Its table is designed to show reliability stars, the share of products that developed a fault within seven years, average time to first fault, and customer score. The detailed brand values are hidden from non-members.

The public article identifies Toshiba as the least reliable brand in that survey: more than a third of its laptops developed some fault within seven years. Which? notes that Toshiba no longer sells laptops in the UK. The public information does not establish which brand ranked first, so it cannot support naming a top brand. See Which?’s laptop reliability survey.
Why the surveys do not produce one universal winner
The sources measure different things over different periods, using different populations. Consumer Reports estimates the likelihood of problems by the end of year three among its members; Which? reports UK owners’ experiences across a period of up to seven years. A brand’s position in one survey cannot simply be compared with another’s as though both used the same test.

- Reliability measure: Check whether a ranking measures predicted problems, reported faults, time to first fault, or customer satisfaction.
- Respondents and market: Which?’s results reflect UK owners; Consumer Reports’ results reflect its members. Survey findings may not transfer cleanly to another country or buyer population.
- Brand versus model: A brand average is a starting point, not a guarantee. Different product families can vary in construction, components, intended workload, repair options, and support.
Consumer Reports’ Best Laptop Brands methodology requires at least three tested models per brand and good-to-great reliability scores for inclusion in its analysis. The article says its ratings cover more than 150 current models. That model-level context is useful, but it does not turn a brand-level signal into a prediction for every model. How to choose a reliable laptop when rankings disagree
- Use one survey at a time. Compare candidates using the same source, metric, and time period rather than blending unrelated rankings into a single score.
- Look up the exact model and product family. Brand-level results can help narrow the field, but the model you plan to buy is the relevant unit for reviews, testing, workload fit, and repair information.
- Check battery and parts serviceability. Which?’s broader technology longevity reporting identifies battery failure as the most common hardware fault across laptops, phones, and tablets. Investigate whether the battery and other likely repair parts can be serviced, and what that means in your country.
- Confirm local warranty and repair options. Service availability and repair costs affect how disruptive a fault may be. Consumer Reports says nearly six in ten broken laptops in its member survey were taken in for repair; that is a repair behavior figure, not a measure of repair success.
- Check software support as well as hardware. A laptop can still power on yet become less useful or less secure when updates end or it cannot move to a supported operating system. Look for the stated support period for the specific model.
Faults, repairs, and practical lifespan
Hardware failure is only one part of how long a laptop remains useful. Which?’s September 23, 2026 longevity article describes a March 2026 survey of 15,755 people covering 43,027 products. Among laptop owners who went ahead with a repair, 84% said they were satisfied with the result. This is satisfaction among people who chose repair—not the percentage of all laptops that fail, nor the odds that a future repair will succeed.
