Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose based on the bottleneck: replace a traditional hard drive with a compatible SSD first if slow file or app loading is the issue; investigate a RAM upgrade first if the laptop slows down while juggling many apps, browser tabs, or demanding projects. If it already has an SSD and enough memory, diagnose the cause before buying parts—there is no universal winner.
What RAM and an SSD do
RAM is the laptop’s short-term working memory for active apps and files. Storage keeps files and programs when the computer is off. Adding RAM can support more simultaneous work; changing storage affects capacity and how the laptop accesses stored data. As Microsoft explains, “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” Microsoft Support’s memory guidance is general, not a guarantee for a specific laptop.

An HDD-to-SSD replacement is different from replacing one SSD with another. Moving from an HDD to a compatible SSD can address slow access to apps and files; replacing an existing SSD with a larger one primarily addresses storage capacity unless there is a separate, diagnosed issue.
Which upgrade to investigate first
| What you notice | First upgrade to investigate | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The laptop runs from a traditional hard drive and is slow opening apps or files | A compatible SSD | An HDD-to-SSD upgrade is a performance path described by Kingston. Check the laptop’s supported drive interface and form factor before choosing a drive. Kingston’s SSD guidance |
| Slowdowns happen with many apps, browser tabs, or large active projects | RAM | More memory may help with simultaneous activity. First check actual memory use and whether the laptop supports an upgrade. |
| Files or apps no longer fit comfortably | A higher-capacity supported SSD | More storage solves a capacity problem; it does not by itself remove a RAM bottleneck. |
| The laptop already has an SSD and seemingly adequate RAM, but still feels slow | Diagnose before buying | The right fix depends on the original system and selected components; neither upgrade is established as a fix for an unspecified slowdown. Crucial’s compatibility guidance |
These are starting points, not benchmark guarantees. Kingston frames the choice around the problem and intended result, while Crucial notes that an upgrade’s impact depends on the system and components chosen. Kingston’s memory-or-storage guide

How to check whether the laptop can be upgraded
- Find the exact make and model. Use the laptop’s system information or its label, then consult model-specific documentation or a compatibility selector. A product name alone may not distinguish configurations.
- Check memory support. Confirm whether RAM is soldered or replaceable, the supported generation and maximum capacity, the number of slots, and supported configurations. Kingston recommends checking compatibility and warns that mixing capacities, speeds, or brands can cause compatibility issues; system limits can also prevent memory from reaching its advertised speed. Kingston memory support
- Check storage support. Identify whether the current drive is an HDD or SSD and confirm the supported interface—such as SATA or NVMe—and physical form factor. Not every laptop accepts every type of SSD. Kingston’s SSD guidance
- Match the part to the symptom. A compatible part is not automatically a useful upgrade. Select capacity or memory based on the bottleneck you observed, and use the exact system model in a compatibility tool. Crucial’s compatibility guidance
How much RAM is enough?
Microsoft Support’s general Windows guidance says at least 4 GB for users primarily browsing the web, working on documents, or streaming online video; recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term; and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and projects needing high performance. These are broad usage recommendations, not a universal minimum, an upgrade limit for a particular laptop, or proof that adding RAM will resolve a slowdown. Microsoft Support

The available guidance does not establish a universal speed multiplier, percentage improvement, or laptop-specific head-to-head result for RAM versus SSD upgrades. Results depend on the laptop’s starting configuration, the component selected, and the workload. Treat a recommendation as a way to address a diagnosed limitation, not a promise that the whole laptop will feel faster.
