A lit power button does not prove that a laptop has completed startup. It may be stuck before its initial hardware check, failing to load the operating system, or running with a blank display. First note whether the fans or keyboard lights come on, whether a manufacturer logo appears, and whether you hear beeps or see a repeating light pattern. Those clues determine which steps are useful.
Before you force a shutdown, check whether startup may still be in progress
If the laptop may be installing a Windows or BIOS update, leave it connected to its charger and wait at least five minutes before interrupting it. HP warns that an update can temporarily leave the screen blank and that stopping the process may damage the computer. HP’s blank-screen guidance explains this wait.

On applicable ASUS devices, a recent reset or memory change can trigger memory training while the screen remains dark. ASUS says this can take about one to three minutes; keep the computer connected to power and do not force it off during that period. ASUS’s no-display guidance describes when this may happen.
Identify which kind of startup failure you have
| What you observe | What it suggests | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only the indicator light is on; no fan, keyboard activity, or display | The indicator alone cannot distinguish a power-delivery problem from an early startup failure. | Check the charger and connection, then consult the exact model’s reset instructions. |
| Fans or keyboard lights come on, but no manufacturer logo appears; there may be beeps or blinking lights | The laptop may be failing its initial hardware checks, often called POST. | Record the exact blink or beep pattern and look it up in the model’s manual or official diagnostics. |
| The manufacturer logo appears, then startup stops | The computer has reached startup but may be having trouble loading the operating system. | Use manufacturer preboot diagnostics and the operating system’s recovery guidance. |
| There are signs Windows is running, but the screen is blank | The problem may involve video output or the built-in display rather than power-on. | Try Windows’ graphics reset shortcut and, if supported, test an external display. |
Dell separates no-power, no-POST, no-boot, and no-video problems because their troubleshooting paths differ. Dell’s troubleshooting guide also explains that diagnostic lights and sounds can point to a POST fault. Interpret any code using your own model’s documentation; patterns are not universal.

Check the power connection and remove accessories
- Disconnect nonessential devices. Unplug USB drives, docks, external storage, and other accessories, then try starting the laptop with only its power connection attached.
- Check the outlet and charger. Make sure the plug is seated at the wall, adapter, and laptop. If the adapter has an indicator light, note whether it is on. Dell recommends checking the AC-adapter light and trying a known-working adapter if one is available.
- Use only a compatible adapter. A replacement must meet the laptop’s requirements for voltage, wattage, connector, and charging protocol. Do not assume a universal charger is suitable; Lenovo directs users to approved adapters and model-specific instructions in its no-power guidance.
Battery access and charging requirements vary by model. Do not open the case or remove an internal battery as a generic first step.
Use the reset procedure for your exact laptop model
A power or embedded-controller reset can sometimes clear a stuck state, but the method and timing vary by manufacturer and model. Do not treat one brand’s hold time as universal. Find the laptop’s exact support page or manual before starting, and follow its instructions for disconnecting the charger, battery, or accessories.

- ASUS describes a 40-second embedded-controller reset for applicable scenarios.
These are examples, not interchangeable instructions. See the relevant manufacturer’s HP instructions, MSI instructions, or ASUS instructions and confirm that the procedure applies to your model.
If Windows seems to be running but the screen is black
When startup sounds or other signs suggest Windows has loaded, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to ask Windows to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief screen flicker can indicate the shortcut took effect. You can also press Windows + P to cycle display modes. Microsoft includes both options in its blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.

If the laptop supports it, connecting an external monitor can help determine whether the built-in display is the issue. These Windows shortcuts are unlikely to help if the manufacturer logo never appears; use the laptop’s preboot diagnostics for that branch instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop and contact support
Use the manufacturer’s model-specific manual and official support or authorized repair route if the laptop never displays its logo, shows a diagnostic blink or beep pattern, or still fails after the correct reset and charger checks. Record the exact model and the observed code or pattern before contacting support. Avoid opening the laptop or reseating internal parts unless the manufacturer’s instructions and your repair experience make that appropriate.
