“Plugged in, not charging” does not automatically mean your laptop is broken. A charge limit may intentionally hold the battery at 50%, 80% or 90%; an underpowered USB-C charger may run the computer while the battery still falls; or a cable, port, adapter, battery, firmware or charging circuit may be failing.
Use the percentage and the exact status as clues: a stable percentage at a configured limit is usually battery protection, a falling percentage points to insufficient or failing power delivery, and no charger detection suggests an adapter, port or hardware problem.

Start with these two-minute checks
- Connect the original or model-approved charger directly to the laptop.
- Try a different wall outlet and bypass a questionable power strip or extension lead.
- Disconnect docks, USB-C hubs, monitors, KVM switches, external drives and unnecessary peripherals.
- Confirm that you are using a laptop-charging port. Not every USB-C port accepts power.
- Inspect the cable and connector for cuts, bent contacts, looseness or heat damage.
- Restart the laptop, then test again while it is asleep or shut down.
If the adapter becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, sparks or has damaged insulation, unplug it and stop using it. Apple gives similar safety guidance for warm or sparking adapters: check the outlet and adapter connections, then seek service if the problem continues.
What the battery percentage tells you
It is stuck at 50%, 80%, 90% or 95%
This is often intentional. Laptop makers include battery-health modes such as Dell “Primarily AC Use,” Lenovo Conservation Mode, ASUS Battery Care, HP battery-management settings, Acer Care Center limits, Surface Battery Limit and macOS Optimized Battery Charging. These features reduce time spent at full charge and can extend battery service life.

Open the manufacturer’s utility or BIOS/UEFI and look for Battery Health Charging, Charge Threshold, Smart Charging, Preserve Battery or similar wording. Dell documents thresholds and AC-use modes at its battery troubleshooting guide. Surface devices can intentionally stop at 50% when Battery Limit is enabled, as Microsoft explains at Surface battery support. Temporarily raise a limit only to test; restore the health setting if it is working as designed.
The percentage is falling while plugged in
The computer is probably receiving less power than it needs. Common causes include a phone charger, low-wattage USB-C adapter, USB-A-to-USB-C cable, limited dock or monitor output, shared charging, many peripherals, gaming, rendering or another high CPU/GPU workload.
Microsoft explains that USB-C can operate at low power while higher laptop charging depends on suitable USB Power Delivery, cable capability and negotiated power: PC is charging slowly or discharging while it’s plugged in.

The laptop works on AC but never gains charge
Check a charge limit first. If no limit is active, shut the computer down completely, connect the correct adapter directly and leave it off for 15–30 minutes. Failure to gain charge while powered off makes the adapter, cable, port, battery or charging circuitry more suspicious than Windows or macOS.
The charger is not recognized
Suspect the outlet, detachable AC lead, adapter, cable, wrong USB-C port, debris, a loose barrel connector or a failed charging jack. Dell’s diagnostics distinguish adapter recognition, reported wattage, battery health, thresholds and indicator behavior; use the model-specific tests before buying parts.

Run the decisive powered-off test
- Save your work and shut down completely.
- Unplug the charger and remove peripherals.
- If the battery is removable, remove it.
- Hold the power button for about 15–30 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery if removed, then connect the original charger directly.
- Leave the laptop off for 15–30 minutes and start it.
If it charges while off but not while running, the source may be underpowered for the workload, or a thermal or operating-system power-management issue may be involved. If it does not charge while off, continue with adapter, port, battery and firmware checks. Use the manufacturer’s exact emergency-reset procedure for business models; do not open a sealed laptop just to perform a generic reset.
USB-C charging: the connector alone proves nothing
USB-C is a physical connector, not a guarantee that a port accepts laptop power. A port may provide data, video, peripheral charging, laptop charging, USB Power Delivery, Thunderbolt or USB4—or only some of these.
A working setup must match the laptop’s input requirement, charger output, USB Power Delivery profiles, cable rating, port capability and any dock or monitor pass-through. A 5 V/3 A source is 15 W, which may power a small device but is inadequate for many laptops. A charger can turn on the computer yet fail to charge its battery under load.
Check the cable
Some USB-C cables carry data but not the charging power a laptop needs. Others are limited to lower current or have internal damage. Apple specifically warns that some USB-C cables do not charge Mac laptops: Apple adapter and cable guidance. Test with the original or a clearly power-rated cable.
Remove docks and monitors
During diagnosis, connect the charger directly. A USB-C dock or monitor may pass through power but have insufficient capacity once displays, Ethernet, storage and USB devices are active. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting steps also recommend checking the correct port, removing intermediaries and cleaning debris: Fix USB-C problems in Windows.

Inspect the outlet, adapter and charging port
- Plug another device into the same outlet, then try an outlet in another room.
- Ensure a detachable AC cord is fully seated in the brick.
- For a barrel connector, match the laptop’s specified voltage, polarity, connector size and wattage. Prefer the original adapter or an explicitly compatible replacement.
- For USB-C, verify laptop charging support, USB Power Delivery, required wattage and a suitable cable.
- Shine a light into the port. Look for lint, dust, bent contacts, looseness or liquid damage.
- Disconnect power before cleaning. Use gentle compressed air if appropriate; never insert needles, paper clips, liquids or metal tools.
Microsoft’s USB-C guidance includes checking for debris and using compressed air. If charging works only when the cable is held at an angle, stop bending it: the connector or port likely needs repair.

Windows 10 and 11 troubleshooting
Check the manufacturer’s controls
Open Dell Optimizer or MyDell, Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant or myHP, ASUS MyASUS, Acer Care Center, MSI Center, Samsung Settings or the Surface app. Names and locations vary by model. Also inspect BIOS/UEFI for charge thresholds, adapter recognition and battery diagnostics.
Update power software safely
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Install BIOS/UEFI, chipset and power-management updates from the laptop maker.
- In Device Manager, expand Batteries and look for Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
- If advised by the manufacturer, uninstall those battery entries and restart Windows so it redetects them.
Menus and device names differ across Windows versions. Do not interrupt a BIOS update, and avoid generic “battery repair” or driver-updater utilities.
Read the notification correctly
“Slow charger” is a power-delivery diagnosis, not proof of a bad battery. Test the original adapter and cable, a direct connection, no dock or monitor, and the laptop asleep or powered off. Microsoft also documents the technical requirements for Windows’ slow-charging notification at Microsoft Learn.
MacBook troubleshooting
- Unplug the adapter from the wall, wait several seconds and reconnect it.
- Try another outlet and inspect every cable connection.
- Use the included Apple adapter and a charging-capable cable when possible.
- Test without hubs, displays or other peripherals.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Battery and review battery-health and optimized-charging behavior.
For MagSafe models, check the indicator color and clean the MagSafe connector and port. For USB-C models, do not assume that a cable fits merely because it can carry data. If charging still fails, run Apple Diagnostics or contact Apple or an authorized service provider.

When the battery or hardware is actually failing
Battery failure becomes more likely when diagnostics report poor health, the battery is not detected, runtime has collapsed, the laptop shuts down immediately when unplugged, the percentage jumps erratically, or a known-good charger still fails while the computer is off.
A swollen, leaking or unusually hot battery—or one lifting the keyboard or trackpad—is a safety issue. Unplug the laptop, stop using it, do not press on the battery and follow the manufacturer’s service or disposal instructions.
Seek repair for a loose or damaged port, charging only at an angle, liquid or drop damage, sparking, smoke, burnt odor, an adapter not detected in BIOS, or failure with a verified charger and cable. The adapter, port, charging IC, motherboard and battery all participate in charging; replacing the battery alone may not solve the fault.
What replacement should you buy?
| Diagnosis | Appropriate next purchase | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Lost, damaged or incorrectly identified adapter | Exact manufacturer replacement matched to the model | Universal barrel adapter without voltage, polarity and connector verification |
| USB-C laptop with an underpowered source | USB-C Power Delivery charger meeting the documented wattage, with a suitable cable | 20 W or 30 W phone charger |
| Intermittent detachable cable | Correctly rated replacement cable | Unbranded cable with unknown current rating |
| Battery-care limit working normally | No purchase; understand or adjust the setting | Unnecessary battery replacement |
| Failed battery diagnostics | Model-specific battery or authorized repair | Generic battery of uncertain fit or safety |
| Damaged port or board | Manufacturer or qualified repair service | Forcing or bending the connector |
Use official compatibility pages for replacements: Dell chargers, Lenovo USB-C adapters and Microsoft Surface accessories. Prices and stock change, so verify the exact model and electrical specifications before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my phone charger for a laptop?
Only if the laptop explicitly supports USB-C charging and the charger provides the required USB Power Delivery wattage. A typical phone charger may power the laptop slowly, trigger a warning or allow the battery to discharge.
Why does my laptop charge when it is turned off?
The charger may be adequate for charging but unable to cover the laptop’s power demand while it is running. Heavy workloads, a dock, monitor or peripherals can expose that limitation.
Should I replace the charger or battery first?
Test the outlet, original adapter, cable, direct connection, charge limit and powered-off charging first. Replace the charger when another compatible adapter works or diagnostics report incorrect wattage; replace the battery only when diagnostics and symptoms support battery failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is it safe to keep using a laptop that charges only at an angle?
No. A loose or damaged connector or port can worsen, overheat or arc. Stop bending the cable and arrange repair.
The Bottom Line
Find the pattern before buying parts: a deliberate percentage ceiling is usually battery protection; a falling percentage usually means inadequate power delivery; and no charging even while powered off with a known-good, model-compatible adapter points to the port, battery or charging circuitry. Stop immediately for swelling, sparks, smoke, burning odor or liquid damage.
