If your laptop runs hotter immediately after a thermal-paste replacement, assume a repair or reassembly problem before blaming the processor. The heatsink may not be making even contact, a screw or clip may be loose, the wrong pad or interface material may have been installed, or a fan cable may have been disturbed. Airflow and workload can also raise temperatures, so verify those without opening the chassis first. The exact laptop model determines the correct material, screw sequence and torque; there is no universal paste amount or “normal” temperature that applies to every notebook.
Why temperatures can rise after a repaste
A repaste should not be judged by the product name on a tube or by a single temperature reading. The thermal module is a stack: the chip’s heat spreader, interface material, heatsink base, heat pipes, fins and fan. A mistake anywhere in that stack can make the machine hotter than it was before service.

Uneven heatsink contact
The most common repair-related explanation is incomplete or uneven contact between the heatsink and the CPU or GPU. If the cooler is slightly tilted, a pad is too thick, paste is cracked, or one corner is held higher than another, a microscopic air gap remains. Air transfers heat much less effectively than a correctly installed interface. A heatsink that feels tight can still be uneven if its screws were tightened in the wrong order or one fastener was missed.

Screws and spring clips apply the pressure that spreads the interface material. A loose screw reduces pressure over one corner; a screw in the wrong hole can prevent the base from sitting flat. Excessive force can bow a board or damage threads, so do not improvise torque values. ASUS troubleshooting guidance lists improper cooler installation and loose clips among possible causes of overheating. The correct screw order and torque must come from the service documentation for your exact model.

- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
Wrong coverage or wrong interface
Paste belongs only where the model specifies paste. Other locations may require a thermal pad, putty, phase-change material or liquid metal. Missing a memory or power-component pad can let those parts overheat and can also leave the heatsink at the wrong height over the CPU or GPU. Applying paste to a location designed for a pad may create a gap rather than fill it.
Fan or cable disturbance
During disassembly, a fan connector can be left partially inserted, a cable can be trapped under the heatsink, or a fan can be damaged by debris. The result may be a fan that never starts, ramps late or reports an error. A new paste cannot compensate for a non-working fan or a blocked fin stack.
Airflow and workload changes
Dust in the intake or exhaust, a soft surface that covers vents, a warmer room, a higher-performance fan mode or a new game can all produce higher readings without any paste fault. ASUS notes that blocked airflow restricts cooling and that fan speed responds to CPU and GPU temperature. Compare like-for-like workloads before concluding that the repair failed.

Thermal materials are model-specific
Do not treat “repasting” as a universal procedure. A laptop can use more than one interface material in the same thermal module, and the material may differ between revisions of a product family.
| Material | Where it may be specified | What can go wrong | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional thermal paste | Often the CPU or GPU die/heat spreader, only where the service manual calls for it | Insufficient, excessive or uneven coverage; dried or cracked application | Use the model’s documented material and application method |
| Thermal pad | Memory modules, voltage-regulation components or other fixed-height parts | Incorrect thickness, missing pad or pad shifted during assembly changes heatsink height and contact | Match the specified thickness and location exactly; do not guess |
| Thermal putty | Some designs use compressible material where component heights vary | Replacing it with a rigid pad can prevent the base from contacting the processor | Follow the model-specific parts list and service instructions |
| Phase-change material | Selected high-performance notebook designs | Substituting ordinary paste or disturbing the material can reduce contact and create a difficult rework | Use the manufacturer’s procedure or authorized service |
| Liquid metal | Only certain models and locations | Spillage, incorrect barriers or incompatible handling can damage electronics | Stop DIY work unless you have model-specific training and instructions |
For example, the ASUS GX551QM service guide dated December 8, 2023, says thermal materials must be replaced when its thermal module is removed and includes liquid-metal rework instructions. That is a model-specific example, not a rule for every ASUS notebook. MSI’s product-information page, updated January 26, 2022, identifies a phase-change liquid-metal pad in particular laptops with 12th-generation Intel Core i9 processors and warns that repasting carries high risk even for professionals.
Checks to perform before opening the laptop again
Start with observations that cannot create another assembly error. Record the exact model and configuration, then collect readings under repeatable conditions.

- 100 % ORIGINAL DUE TO AUTHENTICITY CHECK: Due to our Authenticity Check, the authenticity of each individual product can be verified
- Record the conditions. Note CPU and GPU temperatures, ambient room conditions, the application or game being used, fan mode, clock speed if shown, and whether the system throttles, freezes or shuts down. Idle, video playback and gaming temperatures are different workloads and must not be compared as if they were the same test.
- Use a hard, level surface. Remove blankets, cushions and other fabric that can cover intake vents. A stand may improve clearance, but it cannot correct poor heatsink contact.
- Inspect every vent. Look for dust mats, tape, labels or objects blocking intake and exhaust openings. Clean only according to the manufacturer’s guidance; do not force debris deeper into the fin stack.
- Observe fan behavior. At startup and under a known load, confirm that the expected fan starts and changes speed. A fan that stays still, makes scraping noises or reports a diagnostic fault points to a hardware problem rather than a paste choice.
- Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic. Use the support application or firmware test supplied for your model. MSI’s notebook troubleshooting guidance, dated May 13, 2024, recommends checking ventilation, fan modes and diagnostics, then contacting support if the condition remains.
- Repeat the same workload. Use the same application, power mode and duration for before-and-after comparisons when those records exist. A new game patch, a background update or a different power profile can otherwise look like a thermal change.
How to interpret the symptoms
| Observed symptom | Most useful first hypothesis | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature jumped immediately after service | Heatsink contact, screw sequence, material coverage or disturbed fan connection | Stop repeated stress tests; consult the exact service guide or the repair provider |
| Only gaming or rendering is hotter | Changed workload, power mode, ambient temperature or GPU airflow | Repeat a matched workload and verify vents and fan profile |
| CPU is hot while the fan stays quiet | Fan control, connector or fan hardware fault | Run the maker’s fan diagnostic and seek service if it fails |
| One chip is hot and the other is normal | Uneven contact or incorrect material over that chip | Have the thermal module inspected using the model’s procedure |
| Both CPU and GPU rise together | Shared heatsink, airflow restriction or fan problem | Check vents, fan operation and the common thermal module |
| Throttling, sudden shutdowns or burning smell | Severe cooling failure or possible hardware damage | Power down and obtain qualified service |
When the service manual is essential
Before removing the cover, find the maintenance or service documentation for the exact model number, not merely the marketing family. The manual should identify which components receive paste, pads, putty or another material; show the disassembly order; and specify screw locations and tightening instructions. If those details are unavailable, guessing is not a safe substitute.
The ASUS GX551QM guide demonstrates why model documentation matters: it treats thermal material replacement as part of thermal-module removal and separately addresses liquid-metal work. A procedure for that model cannot be copied safely to a different ASUS notebook, much less to another manufacturer’s design.
If you decide to reopen a conventional-paste system
Only proceed when the manual clearly specifies ordinary paste and you can identify every connector and fastener. Disconnect power as instructed, photograph cable routing, keep screws mapped to their original holes, clean mating surfaces with the method approved for the device, and inspect pads for tears or compression. Replace materials only with the specified type and dimensions. Reinstall the heatsink in the documented sequence, reconnect the fan before closing the chassis, and perform a gentle functional check before any sustained load.

Do not infer a correct amount from internet “pea-sized” rules. Die size, mounting pressure and the design of the cooler determine the required application. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal quantity, pattern, pad thickness or torque value.

Liquid metal is electrically conductive and can damage a board if it spreads beyond the intended contact area. It also requires compatible surfaces and correctly placed barriers. A phase-change pad can have a specific thickness and installation method; replacing it with conventional paste may leave a different bond line and worsen temperatures.

What to tell a repair shop or manufacturer
Give the technician information that allows a meaningful before-and-after comparison. Include the full model and serial configuration, the date and type of service, the material used if known, temperatures before and after under the same workload, fan mode, ambient conditions, diagnostic results and any throttling or shutdown. State whether the change was immediate or developed later.
If a paid repair preceded the problem, contact that provider first and describe the symptom without reopening the chassis. Reopening it can obscure the original assembly condition and may affect service terms. Ask the provider to verify heatsink seating, screw order, pad or putty placement, fan connectors and fin-stack airflow against the model’s documentation.
How to prevent a repeat problem
- Keep the service manual with the laptop’s maintenance records, including the exact revision and date.
- Photograph cable routing and screw positions before disassembly, and label screws by location.
- Replace every interface material the manual says to replace; do not reuse a compressed pad or assume old putty can be restored.
- Clean vents and maintain clearance on a hard surface before assuming paste has failed.
- Use the manufacturer’s fan diagnostics after service and before running demanding workloads.
- Keep temperature comparisons tied to the same workload, power profile and approximate room conditions.
- Prefer authorized service for liquid metal, phase-change materials or any design whose material specifications are unclear.
Why a single temperature number is not enough
No universal “normal” laptop temperature threshold is established here. Sensor labels differ, firmware may report junction or package values, and fan curves vary by model. A short peak during a burst workload can be expected on one machine and abnormal on another. The meaningful question is whether the current behavior differs from the same laptop under the same conditions, and whether it causes throttling, instability or shutdown.
Use trends rather than one reading: temperature under a repeatable load, fan response, sustained clock behavior and system stability. Avoid long stress tests when the machine is already shutting down or severely throttling; those tests add heat without helping you identify a safe repair.
A decision path you can follow
- Immediate change after repasting? Treat contact, material choice, fasteners and fan wiring as the leading suspects.
- No immediate change, but higher readings now? Check workload, power mode, room temperature, vents and fan profile.
- Fan diagnostic fails or a fan does not spin? Stop using demanding loads and arrange hardware service.
- Liquid metal or phase-change material involved? Do not substitute products or repeat the repair from memory; use the manufacturer or an authorized center.
- Basic checks pass but throttling continues? Have the thermal module inspected against the exact service manual, especially if another person performed the repaste.
The practical verdict is simple: overheating that begins right after repasting is usually a reason to verify the installation, not to keep adding paste. Confirm airflow and diagnostics without opening the chassis, then use model-specific documentation or qualified service for the thermal module. Material type, pad dimensions, screw sequence and torque are design details, so a repair that is correct for one laptop can be damaging on another.
