If you’re choosing one primary device for school or college, I’d start with a laptop—unless your course requirements or day-to-day work point clearly to a tablet. A laptop is usually the safer fit for long writing sessions, research across multiple apps, desktop software and specialist school tools. A tablet is excellent for reading, annotating PDFs, handwritten notes and light work on the move.
The deciding question isn’t which device is better in general; it’s which one can reliably do the work your studies require. Check your institution’s software and exam requirements before choosing a brand or form factor.

Why a laptop is the safer choice for one primary device
Assignments, research and course software can make a tablet feel limiting when it is your only computer. A laptop’s built-in keyboard and trackpad suit sustained typing, while its desktop operating system is more likely to support full applications and workflows that depend on several programs at once.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft’s US-market guide, published April 9, 2026, says a laptop is the better primary device for most students because it handles typing, research and full desktop apps more easily. That is Microsoft’s product guidance, not the result of a controlled comparison of student outcomes. Hastings College IT also recommends a laptop as a primary college device, noting possible tablet limitations with specialist software, file management and online exam proctoring. Those requirements are specific to its systems, but they show why checking your own school’s setup matters.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
A laptop is the stronger default if you expect to:
- Write long essays, reports or lab work regularly.
- Keep several research sources and applications open together.
- Use desktop software or specialist tools required by your course.
- Take online exams that rely on a particular proctoring system.
When a tablet is the better fit
Tablets are well suited to reading, PDF annotation, handwritten notes and portable light work. If much of your study involves reading material and marking it up with a pen, a tablet can make those tasks simpler to carry out. Microsoft likewise describes tablets as a strong secondary device for reading, annotation and portability.
A tablet makes the most sense as your primary device when your course’s required apps and school systems work on that specific tablet, your typing load is modest, and reading or handwritten note-taking is central to your routine. If you expect to type essays or longer assignments, budget for a compatible keyboard or keyboard case. The added keyboard makes typing easier; it does not make tablet software fully equivalent to desktop software.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Education advises parents and caregivers choosing devices for school-age children to get an attachable keyboard with a tablet. That is useful practical guidance, not a universal specification for university students. In every case, verify the keyboard’s compatibility with the exact tablet model before buying.
What about a 2-in-1?
A 2-in-1 can bridge the two use cases: you get a keyboard for conventional computer work and, on models with a suitable touchscreen, the option to use touch or a pen for notes and document markup. It can be a sensible middle ground if you want one device for writing and handwritten work.

Check the particular model’s operating system, apps and course compatibility rather than assuming every 2-in-1 behaves like a full laptop. Also include any pen, keyboard or dock you need in the total cost. A device’s convertible design cannot compensate for software your course requires that it cannot run.
Check course requirements before buying
Start with your department’s and institution’s published requirements. A device that is adequate for general browsing may not meet a course’s application, testing or support needs.

- List required applications. Check whether each one needs a full desktop version, a particular operating system or a specific hardware capability.
- Confirm exam and school-system compatibility. Ask whether online proctoring, learning platforms and file-submission workflows support the device you are considering.
- Check stated specifications. Follow your institution’s requirements where they exist; do not treat another college’s recommendation as a universal rule.
- Ask about support and useful life. Verify operating-system updates, warranty coverage, repair options and any local school or college standards that apply.
Hastings College’s guidance reflects its own software and systems. The UK Department for Education’s laptop, desktop and tablet standards concern school and college procurement, support and security; they are not consumer buying rules that apply everywhere. Use local institutional guidance for your own course and region.
Compare the practical trade-offs
| What matters | Laptop | Tablet | 2-in-1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long typing and multitasking | Usually the better fit for sustained typing and working across apps. | Consider the typing load and whether a compatible keyboard is available. | Can support keyboard work; confirm the device and required apps suit the course. |
| Reading, annotation and handwriting | Can handle reading, but pen input depends on the model. | Well suited to reading and PDF annotation; stylus support varies. | May combine keyboard work with touch or pen input, depending on model. |
| Desktop and specialist software | Often the safer choice, but check exact application requirements. | Compatibility may be limited; verify each required app and school system. | Depends on its operating system and the applications it supports. |
| Accessories and total cost | Typically includes a keyboard and trackpad. | Add the cost of a compatible keyboard if you need to type often; a pen may be extra. | Check whether the pen, keyboard or dock you need is included or sold separately. |
| Portability and battery | Compare the actual model’s weight and battery against how and where you study. | Often suited to portable reading and light work; check model-specific weight and battery. | Compare the specific device’s weight, battery and accessories as a complete setup. |
There is no single weight or battery target that applies to every student. New Zealand’s Ministry of Education suggests a battery lasting at least a six-hour school day and a screen size of 10 inches or larger for the child-device context its guidance covers. Treat those as context-specific recommendations, not requirements for every college student or course.

Make the decision based on your own study week
Think through the work you do most often, not just the tasks that look appealing on a new device. If your week is dominated by essays, research and required desktop applications, choose a laptop as your primary device. If it centers on reading, marking up PDFs and handwritten notes—and your required tools work on the tablet—a tablet may be enough. If both patterns matter, assess whether a compatible 2-in-1 or a laptop-plus-tablet setup fits your budget and needs.
Quick Recap
- Choose a laptop when typing, multitasking or software compatibility is the priority.
- Choose a tablet when portability, reading and pen-based work dominate and course compatibility is confirmed.
- Consider a 2-in-1 when you want keyboard work and touch or pen input in one device, and its specific apps meet course requirements.
