A desktop GPU is usually faster than a laptop GPU with the same model name, but there is no reliable universal percentage. Laptop GPU performance depends on its power limit and cooling, as well as the game or workload, resolution, settings, processor and even how the display is connected. The practical answer is to compare the exact laptop and desktop configurations you are considering—not just the GPU badges.
Why the same GPU name does not mean the same performance
A laptop GPU has to operate within the power, cooling and physical limits of its chassis. A desktop graphics card has more room for power delivery and cooling, so a desktop version with a matching model name can sustain higher performance. But a GPU name alone does not tell you how large the difference will be.

For current NVIDIA RTX 50 Series laptop GPUs, the manufacturer lists subsystem power ranges of 95–150 W for the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU and 80–150 W for the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. Those are ranges, not a guarantee that every laptop reaches the top of them. Check the exact laptop model and configuration in NVIDIA’s laptop GPU specifications; two laptops carrying the same GPU name may be configured differently.

Cooling capacity and the laptop’s performance mode affect how well it can sustain demanding workloads. RTINGS notes that “the same GPU can perform very differently depending on the power draw and the laptop’s cooling capacity,” and its laptop graphics testing methodology, updated November 7, 2025, describes controls such as room temperature and performance mode.

What benchmark comparisons show
Published comparisons illustrate how much the gap can change with the hardware and test conditions. Their results are useful examples, not a conversion formula for other laptops or games.
RTX 4090: the gap widened at higher resolutions
In TechSpot’s 2023 comparison across 20 games, the desktop GeForce RTX 4090 averaged 21% higher performance than the tested 150 W RTX 4090 Laptop GPU at 1080p, 36% higher at 1440p and 56% higher at 4K. These figures apply to those reviewed configurations and that test suite, not all laptop and desktop GPUs.

- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
- Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
- Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
- Memory Interface: 64-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
The change by resolution helps explain why results vary. Some 1080p games in the comparison were limited by the CPU, which narrowed the GPU gap. At 4K, the tests were more GPU-limited and the difference widened. The laptop was connected to an external display directly to its GPU, so results on a laptop’s built-in display or a different display connection may not match. See TechSpot’s RTX 4090 desktop-versus-laptop comparison for its test setup and results.

In an August 2025 comparison, Tom’s Guide reported that an Acer Predator Helios 18 AI with an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU delivered just over half the rendering performance of an Acer Predator Orion 7000 with a desktop RTX 5080 in its graphics tests. The article gives maximum GPU power figures of 175 W for the laptop configuration and 360 W for the desktop configuration.

Treat it as an illustration of those particular machines, not a prediction for every RTX 5080 laptop and desktop. - GPU variant and power: Confirm whether the GPU is a laptop or desktop version and, for a laptop, check the specific model’s stated GPU power configuration.
- Cooling and performance mode: A thin chassis, restricted cooling or a quieter power mode can affect sustained performance. A short peak result may not represent longer gaming or rendering sessions.
- Resolution and settings: Higher resolutions and demanding graphics settings can place more load on the GPU. At lower resolutions, a CPU limit may hide some of the difference between graphics processors.
- Workload: A game benchmark does not automatically predict rendering, compute or performance in another game. Compare results for the applications you actually use.
- CPU and system configuration: The processor can constrain frame rates, particularly when a workload is CPU-limited. Whole-system comparisons also reflect differences beyond the GPU.
- Display routing: How a laptop’s internal or external display connects to the GPU can affect the result. Note the display path used in any benchmark you rely on.
How to compare a laptop and desktop for your needs
- Identify the exact products. Record the full laptop SKU and whether its GPU is a laptop variant. For a desktop, identify the specific graphics card and the rest of the system.
- Check laptop GPU power information. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for that laptop configuration; do not assume the GPU name alone reveals its power limit.
- Find comparable benchmarks. Prefer tests that use the same game or application, resolution, graphics settings and, where possible, similar CPUs. Keep complete-system comparisons distinct from GPU-focused tests.
- Match the test to your display and use. Look for results at your target resolution and settings, and note whether the laptop was tested in a particular performance mode or connected to an external display.
- Weigh performance against portability. A desktop tower generally has more room for power and cooling, while a gaming laptop’s central advantage is that you can take the whole system with you. Decide whether that mobility is worth the performance trade-off for your workload.
What to expect in practice
Expect a desktop GPU to be faster than a laptop GPU with the same model name, but do not assume one fixed percentage. The measured gap can shift substantially with resolution, game, power configuration, cooling and system limits. The cited RTX 4090 and RTX 5080 comparisons show why exact-system benchmarks are more useful than a generic laptop-versus-desktop rule.
These examples cover particular reviewed configurations, not every current model. GPU generations, laptop configurations, availability and benchmark results change; check current specifications and independent tests before choosing a specific system.
