Check encryption in your laptop’s built-in settings, then verify the drive’s status and recovery route. On Windows, start with Device encryption and use BitLocker status for a drive-level check. On a Mac, inspect FileVault—but interpret its setting alongside the Mac’s hardware, because Apple silicon and T2 models encrypt internal storage even when FileVault is off.
What an encryption check tells you
These checks show whether built-in protections are enabled or how the system protects data stored on the drive. They do not establish that a laptop is safe from every threat: drive encryption is intended to protect stored data, such as when an offline drive is accessed without its key. It is not a guarantee against malware or exposure while the computer is unlocked. Microsoft explains BitLocker’s role in its BitLocker overview.

Distinguish a device’s ability to use encryption from encryption that is actually active. A Windows support or eligibility result is not proof that a drive is protected; check the current setting or drive status.
Check encryption on Windows 10 or 11
Start with Device Encryption in Settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
- Read the Device Encryption state. If it is on, this confirms the feature is enabled; if it is off, it is not currently enabled through that control.
Microsoft says Device Encryption is available on a wider range of devices, including some Windows Home devices. BitLocker Drive Encryption is available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Availability does not mean every compatible device has encryption turned on. Device Encryption can turn on automatically during setup or sign-in with a Microsoft or work or school account; a local account does not turn it on automatically. If Device Encryption is missing
Microsoft says the setting may be absent because the device does not support the feature or the signed-in account is a standard account. To inspect eligibility, open System Information as an administrator and find Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support. A result such as “Meets prerequisites” or an explanation like “TPM is not usable,” “WinRE is not configured,” or “PCR7 binding is not supported” concerns support or prerequisites. It does not tell you that encryption is currently active.
Verify a particular drive with BitLocker status
For a drive-level check, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
manage-bde -status c:This checks the C: drive; replace c: with another volume if needed. Review the status fields, including Conversion Status. Microsoft documents that this field can distinguish Fully Encrypted from Used Space Only Encrypted. Do not infer that protection is active merely because the command or BitLocker tools are available. - Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault.
- Check the displayed FileVault state and interpret it in light of the Mac’s hardware generation.
On a Mac without Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip, Apple says FileVault must be enabled to encrypt data. On Apple silicon and T2 Macs, internal storage is encrypted even when FileVault is off. In that off state, Apple describes the volume encryption key as protected by the hardware UID; FileVault adds protection using the user’s password together with the hardware UID. Therefore, “FileVault off” does not mean internal storage is unencrypted on those Macs. Apple explains the distinction in its FileVault volume-encryption guide and related security guide.

Confirm that you can recover access
Encryption makes recovery planning important: losing the recovery route can mean losing access to files. Check where the key for your setup is held before changing hardware or firmware.
Windows recovery key
A BitLocker recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. BitLocker may request it after detecting a potential unauthorized change, but ordinary hardware, firmware, or software changes can also trigger a request. Automatically enabled Device Encryption may save the key to a Microsoft account or a work or school account. On an organization-managed laptop, an administrator may hold it. Verify the relevant account or contact your IT administrator before making changes. See Microsoft’s BitLocker overview.

FileVault recovery key
Apple describes a FileVault recovery key as a generated string of letters and numbers. If you use this recovery option, keep the key somewhere safe other than the encrypted startup disk. Depending on configuration, it may be stored through iCloud Keychain or escrowed by device management on a managed Mac. Apple warns that losing both the login recovery route and recovery key can mean losing files and settings. Follow Apple’s FileVault protection guidance for your setup.

The available Google guidance describes a memory-encryption algorithm field in enterprise device inventory for managed ChromeOS devices, not a general consumer-facing procedure for checking personal Chromebook storage encryption. If your Chromebook is managed, ask its administrator what the reporting field means for your device; do not treat an update page or enterprise inventory detail as a personal encryption-status check. Windows and Mac instructions do not apply to Linux distributions. Encryption setup and status checks vary by distribution and how the system was installed.
Interpreting the result
- Windows says the feature is supported: this is an eligibility result. Check Settings or the drive-level BitLocker status to determine whether protection is active.
- Windows reports used-space-only encryption: this is a distinct conversion status from fully encrypted; use the reported status rather than assuming encryption has completed.
- FileVault is off on Apple silicon or a T2 Mac: internal storage is still encrypted, but FileVault’s additional password-based protection is not enabled.
- You cannot locate a recovery key: identify the account or organization that may hold it before making changes that could prompt recovery.
