To find out whether Bluetooth is on, check the Bluetooth setting for your operating system. These are separate questions: a missing Windows toggle can mean a driver, firmware, settings, or hardware problem—not necessarily that the laptop lacks Bluetooth.
First, separate Bluetooth hardware from its on/off setting
A laptop can have a Bluetooth adapter that is switched off, or it can have an adapter that the operating system cannot currently detect. Some Windows devices do not include Bluetooth, so check the specifications for your exact laptop model if you cannot find the control. Microsoft notes that most Windows devices have Bluetooth, but not all: Microsoft’s Windows pairing guidance.

Start with the settings path for your operating system. If the control is present, switch it on to use Bluetooth. If it is absent or unavailable in Windows, work through the checks below before concluding that the laptop has no Bluetooth.

Why the Bluetooth switch may be missing or unavailable in Windows
A missing or grayed-out switch does not by itself prove that the laptop lacks Bluetooth. Windows may not be able to detect or enable the adapter because of settings, a driver, firmware, a stopped service, a recent update, or a hardware fault. Microsoft says that outdated or incompatible drivers are a common cause of Bluetooth connection problems; its troubleshooting guidance covers these possibilities.

Check the laptop model and Device Manager
- Look up the exact laptop model on the manufacturer’s support site and check its specifications for Bluetooth.
- In Windows, open Device Manager and look for a Bluetooth adapter. Its name may include the word “radio.” If the laptop is supposed to include Bluetooth but the adapter is absent or has an error, a detection or driver issue may be involved.

- If it already appears in the laptop’s device list but will not connect, remove it and add it again.

When a USB Bluetooth adapter makes sense
Consider a USB Bluetooth adapter only after checking the specifications for your exact Windows laptop and confirming it has no usable built-in Bluetooth. Microsoft documents using an adapter with a Windows device that lacks Bluetooth in its pairing guidance.
Before choosing one, verify compatibility with the laptop, its operating system and USB ports, and the Bluetooth needs of the accessory. An adapter is not a fix for every missing switch: if the laptop has built-in Bluetooth that Windows cannot detect, first investigate the driver, firmware, settings, or hardware issue.
