Check for power lights, fan noise, a cursor or logo, and whether the screen changes after a safe restart. Then follow the branch for your operating system; recovery and reinstall steps can affect data.
First check whether the laptop is on
Look for power or charging lights, fan noise, keyboard backlighting, a startup sound, or a cursor. These clues help separate a laptop that is not powering on from one that appears to start but shows no picture; they do not identify a failed component.

- Check that the wall outlet works and the charger is firmly connected, undamaged, and suitable for your exact laptop model. If you have access to a known-working compatible adapter, you can try it as a diagnostic substitution. Connector and power requirements vary by model.
- Disconnect docks, USB devices, external storage, and external monitors, then try starting the laptop again.
- If it seems to be asleep, use the wake or restart instructions for that laptop family. Do not assume a key combination or power-button timing applies to every brand.
For a Mac that does not appear to turn on, Apple recommends checking the power connection and outlet, disconnecting accessories, and holding the power button for about 10 seconds before pressing it normally. For Surface devices, Microsoft gives Surface-specific checks, including a 20-second power-button hold; use that timing only for a Surface.
If the screen is black but Windows seems to be running
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the timing and appearance of the blank screen can help choose what to try. A cursor-only screen, a blank screen after an update, and a blinking cursor are different clues, not proof of a particular cause. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide includes these symptom distinctions.

Try a graphics-driver reset
Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. A beep or brief screen flicker can indicate that Windows responded to the shortcut.
Check the display mode
Press Windows+P to cycle display modes. This can help if Windows is sending the image to another display. If an external monitor is connected, disconnect it and retry as part of the basic checks.

If there is a cursor or the security screen appears
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If the security screen opens, use Task Manager to restart Windows Explorer when the screen is blank with a cursor. If these shortcuts do nothing, move on to the recovery options appropriate to the symptom rather than assuming the graphics driver is the cause.

Use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and choose a route that matches when the problem began—for example, after an update or after a system change. Available options depend on the Windows version and device configuration. Microsoft describes recovery choices in its Windows recovery options guide and explains how to reach WinRE in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.

Back up important files first if you can. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can result in data loss. Do not choose a reset or reinstall simply because the screen is black; first try the less invasive steps and check what each recovery option will do to your files.

A Mac that shows signs of starting but remains on a blank screen follows a different path from one that does not turn on. Apple’s blank-screen startup guide recommends a forced shutdown and restart, then trying macOS Recovery.

If macOS Recovery opens
Use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk. If the Mac still starts to a blank screen, Apple’s guidance is to return to Recovery and reinstall macOS. Recovery steps are specific to Macs; do not apply them to a Windows laptop.

If the Mac still will not start normally
If the power checks and Recovery steps do not resolve the blank startup, Apple advises seeking service. A blank screen alone is not enough to conclude that a particular part needs replacement.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the outlet and compatible power adapter checks, accessory removal, and the relevant manufacturer’s startup or recovery steps do not help, contact the laptop maker or a qualified repair provider. Persistent failure to power on, start, or display an image may require service; the symptom alone cannot establish which component is responsible.
